5.05 "This Place is Death"

Jin and Rousseau's team meet up with Smokey. Locke sacrifices himself for the island and the "Lefties". Ben fails to collect all the O6 but does end up with a member that was completely unexpected. On the island – 1988

Jin asks Danielle her name again and where she came from. She repeats her name and tells him that her team sailed out of Tahiti on November 15, 1988. Jin is confused. How could this be Danielle and how could it be 1988? He tells her he needs to get back to his camp. She and the rest of the team are surprised to learn that he’s been on the island before. As he walks away Robert draws a radio tower in the sand, asking Jin if there’s one on the island. He tells him that there is.

He and the members of the science team argue about what to do next. Jin wants to go back to his camp; Robert wants to follow the transmission to the radio tower. Danielle asks Jin if he knows where his camp is from where they are. He doesn’t. She then asks if he could find it from the tower. He says yes. (I’m not sure how since when the rest of the survivors went to the tower he stayed behind at the beach with Sayid and Bernard setting up the trap for their ambush of the Others.) Danielle tells him that if he goes with them to the tower he can then find his way to his camp. He agrees. Why do they need his permission? Can’t they just go without him? *shrug* As then leave, Danielle stops Jin and asks who he’s hoping to find at his camp. “My wife” he replies.

As they walk, Danielle experiences some pain and stops. Robert asks if she’s ok noting that she’s seven months pregnant. She tells him that “she just gave me a little kick”. They flirt back and forth about the gender of the baby and whether it’s an Alexander or Alexandra. Danielle insists that it’s a girl. Robert suggests that they rest and she drink some water. Brennan tells them that Nadine has the canteen. They turn to notice that Nadine is missing. Suddenly a deep growling sound emanates from the jungle. Immediately Jin recognizes it. Robert asks him what it is and he replies “monster”.

They back track to find her even though Jin tells them they need to go. They find her backpack and begin yelling for her. Just then they hear the roaring again and the monster uproots a tree. The group twists and turns looking for the source of the growling. Just then Nadine’s body falls from the sky. Danielle is hysterical as she cradles Nadine’s body. Just then the growling returns and Jin yells to everyone to “RUN!”.

They reach a clearing where the monster and Montand come face to “face”. The monster grabs him and drags him through the jungle. The rest of the group chase and grab him just as the monster pulls him into a crack in the ground outside an old ruin. The group all pull together as the monster snakes up Montand’s body. It then pulls with such force that Montand’s left arm is severed at the shoulder and the group is left holding it.

A little about Smokey: Remember that map that Locke briefly saw on the back of the hatch’s blast door? There were several notations on that map describing a “Cerberus system” as well as 4 instances of the initials “CV”. The produces have since confirmed that Cerberus is what they use when referring to the monster. Cerberus is the mythological 3-headed watchdog of Hades used to allow spirits to enter the underworld and keep them from leaving. They also confirmed that “CV” stands for Cerberus Vents which are underground passageways used by the monster. According to the blast door map, there are 4 of these on the island. This one at the ruins being one of them. The hole that he tried to pull Locke through in “Exodus, Part 2” is another (or could be the same one if the ruins are gone in “Locke’s time”.)

As they stand and collect themselves they hear Montand calling from the hole for help. He seems calm considering his arm has just been ripped off. I think that he’s already been “infected” by the monster. They begin to climb down the hole to Jin’s dismay. As Danielle goes to join them, Jin stops her and tells her she needs to protect her baby. Looks like Jin may have saved her from being infected. She agrees and waits outside the hole with one of the rifles. Just then Jin notices the bright light and humming. Danielle notices only that Jin’s acting erratic. She asks what’s wrong just as Jin vanishes. This makes it more confusing to me as to why Danielle wouldn’t recognize Jin in the future. You don’t forget a guy that disappears before your eyes.

On the island - 1988 or early 1989

Jin opens his eyes to find that Danielle has vanished. He steps forward towards the ruins only to trip on Montand’s rotting arm. He wanders the jungle, drinking water from a large leaf. He then sees a column of smoke in the distance and heads towards it. He comes out on the beach and sees a small camp with a fire burning out. There are various items spread around the camp including the music box that an older Danielle will give to Sayid to fix for her. As he looks around, he’s being pestered by flies. He turns and sees where they’re coming from. The bodies of Brennan and Lecomb are lying on the beach with bullet holes in them. They look (and smell) to have been dead maybe a couple days. Just then Jin hears arguing and peers through the brush to see Robert and Danielle in a heated argument. Both have rifles, Danielle’s trained on Robert. Danielle tells him that the monster has changed him. He says it’s not a monster but rather a security system for the Temple. He asks her to lower her gun because he loves her and doesn’t want her or their baby to be harmed. As she lowers it, Robert quickly raises his and fires. The gun doesn’t go off however. Danielle sadly shoots him in the head and kills him. Just then Jin bursts from the bushes. Danielle turns her gun on him yelling that he too is sick because he disappeared before her eyes. He runs into the jungle with her in chase. He trips over a log just as a flash occurs and as he lands he’s moved to a different time.

So this is the “sickness” Danielle spoke of. Not your run of the mill sickness but more the Exorcist sort of “sickness”. At first you believe, wow, she really was crazy but when she lowers her gun and Robert tries to kill her *and* her unborn baby you gain a whole new respect for one Danielle Rousseau. Why does Smokey want her dead? Is it because she’s carrying a baby?

Side note: In the episode “Exodus, Part 1” where members of the beach group and Rousseau trek through the jungle to the Black Rock, Danielle finds a piece of black fabric hanging from a branch and announces to the group that they’ve entered the “Black Territory”. She tells them that is was there that “it all began – where my team got infected – where Montand lost his arm.” This leads me to believe that Montand didn’t die during this incident. If so she would have phrased it as “where Montand died”. If this is the case, where is he now? Why wasn’t he one of the bodies on the beach? Has he already died or been killed somewhere else? Can Cerberus only inhabit one body at a time? Did it bounce from Montand into Brennan/Lecomb, then to Robert? Why didn’t it “infect” Danielle?

Also, regarding the pillar of smoke that Jin saw in the distance… Also in “Exodus, Part 1”, Danielle tells the survivors that a pillar of smoke appeared just before the Others took Alex from her. She says that the pillar of smoke is a warning that the Others are coming.

Another thing. The ruins themselves. Could this be (or at least be part of) “The Temple” that Ben sent Richard and the Others to and then Danielle with Alex and Karl? It seems rather dilapidated to be a “Temple”. And what of the hieroglyphs? We’ve seen glyphs in multiple places so far in the island. First was on the countdown timer when it reached 108 minutes. The producers confirmed these to mean “underworld”. The next were in Ben’s secret room that he visited just before Cerberus attacked Keamy. These have been translated to mean “to summon protection”. Could Ben have a CV right in his own home? We then saw them on the walls surrounding the frozen donkey wheel. Those translate to “resurrection”. I’ve come across a few attempts at deciphering these new ones but so far nothing that makes any sense. Maybe we’ll have something by next week.

And lastly, in the episode “Solitary” when Rousseau captures Sayid, Sayid tries to escape and gets a hold of Danielle’s rifle. He holds it on her, threatening to fire. When he does, it doesn’t go off. She tells him that “The firing pin has been removed. Robert didn't notice it was missing, either -- when I shot him.”

On the island – unknown time

Jin moves to get up and hears a gun cocked behind him. A voice tells him to turn slowly. He does to find that he’s face to face with Sawyer. They’re thrilled to see on another and hug. Sawyer tells him that he thought he died on the freighter. Jin tells him that he’s been in the water. As the rest of the Lefties happily join them, Jin asks where Sun is.

If Jin is leaping with the other Lefties, wouldn’t they have seen or at least heard Danielle shooting at Jin? Also, how does Sawyer know this isn’t someone from another time that he’s interfering with? When he sees that it’s Jin, how does he know it’s “now” Jin if he thinks “now” Jin is dead?

As they rest by a stream, they try to explain to Jin what’s been happening to them. Jin doesn’t understand and is getting frustrated so he turns to Charlotte (who’s sitting beside Miles) and says “translate!”. Sawyer assumes he’s talking to Miles and tells him to translate. Miles tells him that he doesn’t speak Korean and that he’s from Encino. Jin turns to Charlotte and beings speaking Korean. She turns to Locke and translates, to everyone’s amazement. She tells Jin that Locke plans to bring Sun and the others back to stop the time flashes. Locke tells Jin that she never should have left.

As they move Jin tells Locke that he’ll go with him to get the others. Locke tells him he can’t. Jin asks why. Locke says it just is but he promises to bring Sun back.

Daniel asks Charlotte if she needs a break. She tells him that she just wants to get there. She looks horrible. She’s pale(r then usual) and has dark circles around her eyes. She asks if Locke’s plan will work and Daniel tells her that it makes sense that they could stop what was started by returning to where it began. Charlotte starts to stumble as the sky lights up. With each time shift everyone seems to be experiencing more and more pain.

One the island – unknown time

Immediately yet another flash begins. Charlotte seems to be suffering the most pain.

On the island – unknown time

Charlotte collapses. As Juliet attends to her Sawyer points out that her nose is bleeding again. She tells him that his is too. Daniel asks Charlotte if she can hear him. As she regains consciousness she turns to Jin and beings to frantically speak Korean. As Sawyer asks what she said, she repeats it in English to Jin. “Don’t let them bring her back. No matter what – don’t let them bring her back. This place is death!” Could she be referring, not to Sun but rather, Ji-Yeon? Will Smokey kill her too?

Charlotte rests with the others surround her. She keeps speaking gibberish.

“Why can’t Daddy come with us?” in a childish voice.
“You know what my mum would say about you marrying an American”
“I know more about ancient Carthage then Hannibal himself”

Note about Carthage: After she said this I thought “there’s got to be something to that” so I did a little internet research. Carthage is now known as Tunisia. This is where Charlotte found the polar bear and where Ben “landed” after he turned the frozen donkey wheel. I found that the Carthanginians were searfaring people (Black Rock ring a bell?) that were into child sacrifice. Yeah, you heard me. This is a quote from Wikipedia.com:

Accounts of child sacrifice in Carthage report that beginning at the founding of Carthage in about 814 BC, mothers and fathers buried their children who had been sacrificed to Ba`al Hammon and Tanit there. The practice was apparently distasteful even to Carthaginians, and they began to buy children for the purpose of sacrifice or even to raise servant children instead of offering up their own.

This just had my mind buzzing! Could Cerberus be taking the unborn children of the Others as sacrifices? Is that why they can’t carry to full-term? Is that why these Dharma children keep popping up? Miles? Charlotte? Were they sent away to protect them but something pulled them back? Something like Cerberus? Were the Others protecting Aaron? Protecting Alex? Was Ben protecting Walt when he sent him off the island? Was he protecting Locke when he turned the wheel instead of him? Oh, I think I have a whole new theory of what’s going on here!

Sawyer asks what she’s talking about and Daniel says he has no idea. Locke tells them that they have to keep moving, without Charlotte because she’ll just slow them down. Daniel refuses to leave her and says he’ll stay with her. Suddenly Charlotte appears to be coherent and tells Dan to leave her but he refuses. Suddenly the sky lights up again.

On the island – unknown time

Locke says that they have to move “NOW!”. Charlotte’s incoherent again and mumbles “Oh, oh, turn it up! I love Geronimo Jackson!” Dan tells the others to go, he’ll stay behind. Sawyer asks what happens if they get to the Orchid and it’s not built yet. Charlotte tells them to look for “the well. You’ll find it at the well.” Sawyer looks at her likes she’s nuts and says that they’ll be sure to do that.

Geronimo Jackson has popped up a few times on Lost. First was when Hurley and Charlie were looking through the records in The Swan. The hitchhiker turned undercover cop, Eddie, was wearing their t-shirt. 16 year old Locke had their poster in his locker and one of their albums was at Hurley’s surprise party. What could a (possibly fictitious) 70s band have to do with Lost?

As they arrive at the Orchid Juliet notes that they’re lucky it’s there. Just then, another flash.

On the island – unknown time

The Orchid is gone. Sawyer chastises Juliet for saying something. Locke notices something behind them and pushes by. He comes to an old stone well with a rope hanging down the center to an unseen bottom. Miles asks how Charlotte could have possibly known it was there.

How indeed? Could it just be a childhood memory? Could Jacob be speaking through her to lead Locke in the right direction? Can Jacob infect people as Cerberus does? Could Jacob and Cerberus be one in the same?

Daniel tends to Charlotte as she confesses to him that she’s been on the island before. Daniel asks what she means. She tells him that she grew up here. She says she was there during “this thing…this… Dharma Initiative” but doesn’t say whether her family was part of it. She says that when she was little she moved away with her mother and never saw her father again. When she got “back to England” (had she been to England *before* she went to the island? Or maybe her “mum” went home to England to give birth to her since babies can’t be born on the island.) her mother told her that the island wasn’t real, just something Charlotte had made up. She confesses that that’s why she became and anthropologist, so she could find the island again. Dan asks why she’s telling him all of this. She says that she’s just remembered something. She remembers a man, “a crazy man” that scared her. He told her that she had to leave the island and never come back. He told her that if she did, she’d die. She tells Dan that she thinks that man was – him.

First of all. Who do you think Charlotte’s parents are? My guess is Ben and his little girlfriend Annie. I think that either Ben made them leave before the purge or Annie noticed Ben going mad with power and just left. And my thoughts on Dan is that he’ll flash forward to when Dharma inhabits the island, and even though he knows he can’t change what’s done, he’ll go to a young Charlotte and try to keep her from coming back to the island. I’m sure his crazy talk, and just the way Dan carries himself, would totally freak out any small child.

Back at the well, Jin tells Locke that he doesn’t want him to bring Sun back. Locke says that the all *have* to come back. Jin grabs Locke’s knife and holds it to the well’s rope. He tells Locke to promise that he won’t bring Sun or his baby back to the island. Locke reluctantly promises but asks what he’s supposed to tell Sun if she asks about him? Jin gives Locke his wedding ring and tells him to tell her that he washed ashore, dead, and they buried him. Locke takes the ring and nods. Funny how Juliet and Sawyer don’t ask Locke to keep Jack and Kate safe huh? He climbs up onto the rope to climb down. Juliet tells him that if what he’s doing actually works, she wants to thank him. Just as he beings to climb, there’s another flash. It emanates *from* the bottom of the well. As the flash occurs, Locke falls.

This scene was reminiscent of the one in “Man of Science, Man of Faith” when Locke and Kate entered the Swan hatch for the first time. As Locke lowers her, one of the trees holding his harness breaks and he nearly drops her. Then he lowers her the rest of the way when the flood light fills the hatch and Locke pulls at the cable and Kate’s no longer tied to it.

Suffering even more from this last flash, Charlotte coughs up blood. Dan tells her that he’s sent Des after his mother who will save them. Charlotte stares at Dan who asks “What?”. She tells him “I’m not allowed to have chocolate before dinner….mm..” and then she dies (did Cerberus get another sacrifice?). Daniel cries over her body. Looks like I called this last week when I noticed her red shirt huh?

On the island – unknown time

Sawyer struggles to hold the rope, Juliet tells him he can stop. He looks down to see that the well is gone and that the rope goes directly into the ground. He begins to dig, begging for help. Juliet tells him that there’s nothing they can do for Locke now.

On the bottom of what was once, or will eventually be, the well, Locke screams in pain. He’s broken his leg right through is shin. He yells up to Sawyer but gets no answer. He hears footsteps and sees a shadow approaching. Christian Shepard comes around the corner and says hello. Locke immediately recognizes him as the man from the cabin. He asks what he’s doing here. Christian tells him that he’s here to help him the rest of the way. He tells him that when he came to see him in the cabin he told him that *he* had to move then island but then he let Ben do it. He tells him that Ben told him he knew how to do it and that John had to stay to lead his people. Christian asks him when listening to Ben has never gotten him anywhere. He says that the good news is that he’s here now and asks if he’s ready. Locke says he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do. Christian tells him that Eloise Hawking, in Los Angeles will know exactly how to get them back, he just has to get each and every one that left. (including Des, Frank, Walt, Ji-Yeon?) Locke worries about what will happen if he can’t get them all to come back, Christian says he has faith in him. Locke notes that Richard told him that he’d have to die. Christian tells him that’s why this is called sacrifice. Christian tells him that he just has to get the “frozen donkey wheel” back on it’s axis with a little push. Locke asks for help standing but Christian says he must do it alone. Locke struggles to get up and walk to the wheel. He pushes it and light fills the room. As the flash occurs, Christian asks John to say hello to his son. He vanishes before he finds out who his son is.

I’m still not sure if this is “Christian” or if it’s Jacob in a Christian suit (when I typed that all I could hear is “Edgar-suit” in my head LOL). If it’s Jacob, who IS his son? Ben? I’m pretty confident that we’re going to learn that all of the O6’s parents were either Others or Dharma, like Widmore and Ellie.

So, has the island stopped leaping now that Locke turned the frozen donkey wheel? Will it continue to leap until the O6 return?

Off the island – 2008

Sun sits in her car, about to get out with her gun, as her cell phone rings. (Continuity error! At the end of “The Little Prince” Sun was half out of the car with her gun and her cell hadn’t rung.) It’s Ji-Yeon. She answers and tells her that she misses her. She also tells her that she’s met a new friend for her in America, referring to Aaron. (Ok, creepy. Is she planning to kidnap Aaron?) She tells her she loves her and hangs up. She pulls out the gun and gets out of the car. She approaches Ben and orders Kate to get out of the way. All Kate cares about is the whereabouts of Aaron. Sun tells her that he’s in the car. She goes to get him. Sun holds her gun in Ben’s face, threatening to kill him when Ben tells her that Jin’s alive and he can prove it. He explains to her that someone in LA has the proof; she just needs to take a quick 30 minute ride to see it. He notes that this same person knows how to get them back to the island. Why didn’t he just have everyone meet at the church rather than the marina? *shrug*

Kate puts Aaron in the car and yells at Jack for pretending to care about her and Aaron again only to manipulate them into going back to the island. He insists that he wasn’t pretending. Kate leaves with Aaron. Sayid also leaves, warning Jack and Ben that if he sees either of them again that it’d be unpleasant for them all. Not me! I love Sayid's ass-kicking scenes!! Sun tells Ben to take her to the proof, Jack joins them.

In the car Jack tells Sun that if she doesn’t kill Ben, he will for what he did to Kate. Don't make me pull this van over... Ben screeches the van to a halt and tells them that if they had any idea what Ben has done for them, they’d actually be thanking him. He gives Sun an ultimatum. Shoot me or don’t and we’ll go get your proof. She tells him to drive.

They arrive at a church and get out of the car. Ben pulls Jin’s ring from his pocket and hands it to Sun. He tells her that he got it from Locke and that Jin gave it to him before he left the island. Sun asks why Locke didn’t tell her that himself and he says he doesn’t know. Jack notes that Ben told him Locke didn’t come see him. He tells him that he didn’t; Ben went to see Locke. (Someone has to drug… err kill him right?) Ben apologizes for waiting until they got to the church to give her the ring but he needed them to come here to get back to Jin and the others. Again, why meet at the marina? Just then Desmond arrives. He asks them what they’re doing there and Ben tells him probably the same thing he is. He asks if they’re looking for Faraday’s mother too and Ben looks at him with a puzzled look. There are numerous reason Ben could be looking at Des oddly. a)He didn’t realize that Des was off the island too, b)he knows Des can lead him to Widmore’s daughter (Penny), c)he didn’t realize that Hawking was Faraday’s mother or d)he didn’t realize that Des *knew* Hawking was Faraday’s mother. Or maybe he wasn’t making a face at all and that’s just the way his bug eyes looked at the very moment. Who knows with this show.

They all follow Ben into the church. Eloise is lighting a candle (for Charlotte maybe) and turns to greet them. Does Des recognize her? I’m sure she recognizes him. She sees that not all of them have returned. Ben tells her it’s the best he could do with such short notice. “Alright! Let’s get started” she says. What happened to “God help us all”?

LOST

Why the 70 hour time limit? Will Hawking know where the island will be at the 70 hour mark? Will it be in 2008 at that moment so the O6 can make just an even leap?

5.04 "The Little Prince"

Kate learns who's after Aaron. The "Lefties" set forth a plan to stop the time jumps. A missing "Leftie" is rescuded by a familiar face
Let’s start by talking about the title of this episode. The Little Prince was a French book written by Antoine de Saint. It involves the narrator surviving a crash in the desert. He encounters the Little Prince who has left his home asteroid but ultimately cannot survive away from his home. The illustrator of the book drew the Little Prince as a young, blond-haired child. So many references to Aaron there… Now on with the story.

2004 – On the island

Charlotte remains unconscious while Dr. Juliet repeatedly checks her eyes for dilation. Guess that’s all they taught her at med school. She asks Daniel if he knows what’s wrong with her. Off to the side Locke and Sawyer discuss what they should do next. Locke says he thinks they should head to the Orchid. He figures that this is where it all started maybe that’s where they need to go to stop it all. He has to get off the island like Ben did to bring “them” back. Sawyer asks who and Locke tells him. Sawyer says that they’re dead but Locke says they’re not. When he asks how he knows that Locke says it’s not important. Sawyer points out that it’s a long haul and Locke suggests that they go back to the beach and use the Zodiac to go around the island rather then hiking across it. Locke plays Sawyer like a fiddle here using seeing “her” again as leverage. Looks like he’s learned Ben’s leader-manipulation well. Charlotte wakes up and at first doesn’t recognize Daniel but does after a moment. With that, Sawyer tells the group that they’re heading back to the Orchid like he’s the leader but we know he was just played.

After nightfall the group sees a large beam of light in the distance. Locke recognizes this light as the one that emanated from the Hatch the night that Boone died. He detours the group away from the light. I loved this and I immediately recognized the light.

A short while later they hear a woman’s cries. Sawyer says he’ll investigate. Through the brush he sees the back of Claire sitting on a log. In front of her is Kate. She’s delivering Aaron. Sawyer watches silently in awe. I believe I may even have seen his eyes well up with tears. Was it because of this moment? Or was it because he sees Kate? I’m not sure that he would have said anything, but before he could the island moved again. As excited as I was to see old footage of Claire, I would have loved to have seen Jin and Charlie, who were also in this scene watching the birth from a distance. I almost want to go back and watch the original episode just to see if we can see Sawyer hiding in the bushes behind them. How cool would that be?!

2005 or Later – On the island

Locke approaches Sawyer who is now just looking at the log Claire was sitting on. He asks what he saw. He says that it doesn’t matter because it’s gone now. They continue walking.

After they walk for a bit Locke asks Sawyer if he’s ready to discuss what he saw before the flash. Sawyer tells him to fess up first asking if the light they saw was from the Hatch. Locke tells him of that night, how he thought the light he saw meant something but he later learned that it was just a light. Sawyer asks why he didn’t go to himself and tell him to do things differently. Locke tells him that he couldn’t because he needed to go through that pain to get where he is now.

Now secretly suffering from his own nosebleeds, Miles asks Daniel about it. Daniel tells him that he believes that it’s related to the amount of time one has spent on the island. This confuses Miles because “those yahoos have been here for months” and he’s never been on the island before 2 weeks ago. Daniel asks him if he’s sure about that, hinting that Miles may have been here before, probably as a child since he doesn’t remember it. This supports my “Miles is Chang’s baby” theory.

They arrive at the beach and find that the camp is back but it’s a mess. All of the supplies, and more importantly the beer, are gone. Sawyer calls out the Rose and Bernard, Locke finds Vincent’s leash and the Zodiac is missing. Charlotte suggests that maybe Rose & Bernard and the other Losties took the Zodiac. Sawyer asks why they would do that and Miles points out that they may have been running from whoever came in the outriggers sitting on the beach. Sawyer finds a water bottle in the kayak and Juliet recognizes the name on it as an Indian airline, Ajira. To learn more about this fictious airline, visit www.ajiraairways.com/ Sawyer suggests that the kayaks belong to the Others but Juliet doesn’t recognize them. Locke suggest they take one, in replacement of the missing Zodiac, before the owners come back.. My thoughts here? Clearly, based on the shape that the camp is in, this is the future. I’m not sure why the camp looks the way it does but I think that the outriggers brought the O6 back to the island, hence the airline water bottle.

They begin paddling the kayak. Miles asks now far they have to go and Locke tells them that it won’t take more then a couple hours to get where they’re going. Juliet sees that something is bothering Sawyer and asks if he’s ok. He tells her that he saw Kate. Shocked, she asks what he means. He explains that it was Kate from the past delivering Aaron. Just then a group of people in the other outrigger begin shooting at them. The try paddling fast but they continue to shoot. Sawyer takes Juliet’s paddle after his is destroyed by bullets and she begins shooting back. Just then the light emanates, Sawyer praises God, the flash occurs and they move, into a downpour. Sawyer retracts his praise and they being paddling for shore. Who are the shooters? My guess is that it’s the O6 from the future, not knowing who they’re shooting at. My wild theory? It’s them, shooting at themselves. Maybe they’re heading into trouble and they’re trying to stop themselves, forgetting Daniel’s “rules”, if it didn’t happen, it can’t happen. Or maybe, something the shooting caused HAD to happen. For example, Sawyer's paddle wouldn't have been destroyed. Juliet wouldn't have shot off a few rounds of ammo. Maybe the island wouldn't have moved. It does seem to do it just when we need it too. Yeah, it’s crazy but this is LOST. Also, the shooter were incredibly far away but it appeared to me that Juliet may have hit one when she shot at them.

1988 – On the island

They make it ashore as night falls. Juliet asks Sawyer to continue telling him about seeing Kate in the jungle. He tells her that he was close enough to touch her if he wanted to and Juliet asks why he didn’t. He tells her “what’s done is done”. Just then he notices that she has a nosebleed. Sawyer was sweet here… he really does love Kate. I hope the writers aren’t planning a Sawyer/Juliet match up because… ewww.

Walking the beach, Charlotte calls to the other to “come look at this”. She’s found wreckage washing up on the beach. Locke rolls over some of it with is foot to see that it reads “besixdouze”. He asks if anyone speaks French. Besixdouze means B612 in French. B612 is the name of the asteroid in which The Little Prince lives in the book.

Meanwhile, we see a group of men and woman floating in the ocean in an emergency life raft. They’re speaking French to one another so they’re probably from the wreckage that’s washing ashore. Here’s a translation of the conversation…

Robert: I told you so! We never should have followed those damn numbers!
Montand: It’s not my fault, Robert. Brennan was in charge of the sonar!
Brennan: I was watching, Montand! I told you already, the instruments malfunctioned!
Woman: Man overboard!

In the distance they see a man floating on a piece of debris.

Man: What?
Man: I thought we were all there!
Man: We are all here! He’s not one of us. So who is he?
(Shouting)
Paddle! Paddle! Come on!
Point the light on him!
Brennan, help paddling!
Come on! Hurry up! We are moving with the current!
No... There's only him! No boat, nothing.
The waves will bring us to the coast.
The wind is coming over here.
In the name of God, Brennan! Shut up!
Come on, bring him in the raft.
Help me.
He's heavy!
He's still breathing.

They paddle over and pull the man from the water, revealing him to be JIN!! Woo-hoo! Looks like Jin’s been leaping through time with the others all this time.

They reach the beach by morning. Two of the French men are discussing the numbers being transmitted over their radio leading them to wonder if the island is inhabited. Here’s the translation…

MONTAND: Look, the signal's coming from the island.
ROBERT: Can you find the source?
AUTOMATED VOICE OVER RADIO: 15... 16...
MONTAND: Yes, of course. Look.
ROBERT: Do you think it is inhabited?
MONTAND: I don't know.

You’ll recognize these numbers as THE numbers. This is the transmission that Rousseau will later block with her SOS.

As Jin wakes, one of the women who’s removed her rain gear and shows us her pregnant belly, offers him water and asks if he’s ok but he can’t understand French. Poor Jin. He spends 3 months on a island struggling to understand English and now that he gets it, he has to learn French! LOL After he says “no understand” she replies in English. He tells her that he was on a boat but it’s now gone. She asks his name and tells him that hers is Danielle Rousseau, leaving Jin very confused. LOVE THIS SHOW! It’s odd to see a sweet, round-faced Rousseau. This island really did a number on her huh?

I guess it’s safe to assume, based on Daniel “rules”, this meeting occurred back in 1988 which means Rousseau should have recognized Jin when she meets the Losties. I don’t remember any specific point where Jin and Rousseau have met. If they have, maybe she just too nuts to remember him.

Day after being rescued – Off the island

Jack and Kate are on The Searcher and discuss what to do about Aaron. Kate tells Jack that she wants to pretend that he’s hers. She’s lost so many people, she couldn’t stand to loose him too. Jack tells Kate that they’re all going to have to lie and he’s going to need her help convincing everyone that it’s a good idea. When he asks if she’s with him she tells him that she’s “always been with” him.

Current day – Off the island

Kate borrows a suit from Sun and sets out to meet with the lawyer demanding her blood sample. While she’s away Sun agrees to watch Aaron. As Kate walks out the door a delivery man give Sun and envelope. In the package she finds surveillance reports, photos of Jack and Ben and a box of chocolates with a gun hidden inside. I’m guessing this was sent by Widmore. I’m sure we didn’t see they’re entire meeting at the airport. This was probably discussed. I tried to read some of her surveillance reports by pausing the ol’ TiVo. After being confused because the “subject” appeared to be a woman I did some research online. Turns out that the “characters” in the report are from a Lost online game which means there’s probably little relevance to the actual show.

At Dan Norton’s law office, Kate tries to make a deal. She tells him that she’ll supply the blood samples if he’ll tell her who his client is. He tells her that she knows she’s in no position to bargain but he’ll mention it to his client when he meets with them later that day. I’m guessing he told her of the meeting knowing she’d follow him. I don’t think, however, that he expected that Jack would be there to confront his “client”. Had Jack not been there, Kate would have recognized his “client” and freaked out, leaving her vulnerable to running away to the island with Aaron.

Back at the hospital, Jack continues to help Sayid. He tells him that he has the equivalent of three horse tranquilizer in him. Sayid tells him that they have to get to Hurley before Ben does. Jack tells him that Ben is on their side. Sayid believes that Ben is only on Ben’s side. Just then the head of clinical services comes into the room, demanding a word with Jack. She’s furious with him for using the hospital after he’s been suspended. He apologizes and tells her it was an emergency just as he’s cell phone rings. He excuses himself and takes the call. It’s Hurley… wearing the biggest orange jump suit I’ve ever seen. He asks Jack if Sayid is ok and Jack tells him that he is. He asks where he is and Hurley tells him that he’s in LA County lockup and to tell Sayid he did just what he told him and that Ben will never get him now. Jack asks what he’s talking about as Hurley hangs up on him.

Back in Sayid’s room a nurse comes in to give him his “meds”. Sayid tells him he has the wrong room but the nurse checks the chart and says it’s the right one. He turns to put the chart down and when he turns back he shoots to darts towards Sayid. Luckily Sayid had already climbed out of the bed and grabbed the assailant. They struggle, the assailant drops the dart gun and Sayid strangles him with is IV tube. Sayid asks who sent him and the assailant tells him “address… in my pocket”. Sayid releases him, shoot 2 darts into his chest then checks his pockets. In the first he finds keys, in the other, his wallet. Upon opening his wallet he finds a scrap of paper with an address on it. Ben and Jack come in and see the scene. Jack asks what happened and Sayid shows him the address. 42 Panorama Crest, Kate’s address. This doesn’t explain who sent him does it? Common thought is that it’s either Widmore or Ben that keeps attacking Sayid. Ben knows that Sayid and Kate will fight going back to the island. Maybe he thinks the only way to get them there is unconscious. Widmore could be a)trying to keep them from Ben or b)collecting the O6 for himself so he can go back. Or maybe it’s not “Kate’s address” at all… maybe it’s Aarons. Still doesn’t explain whey the assailant would give up the address when asked who sent him. Hmmm…

Outside, Jack frantically calls Kate. He asks if she’s ok and tells her that she needs to get Aaron and get out of the house. She tells him that she’s not home and that Aaron is with Sun. Jack’s surprised to hear that Sun’s in LA. He asks if he can see her, he tells her where she is. He tells Ben that he’s going to her; Ben says he’ll go get Hurley. Sayid tells him that he’s not going anywhere. Ben reminds Sayid that his friends are in trouble and need to be taken somewhere safe. He tells Ben that he’ll drive. Ben tells Jack to meet them at the marina after he gets Kate. He tells him to hurry because they’re running out of time.

Jack finds Kate sitting in her car. She smiles at the sight of a clean, shaven Jack. Though she’s happy to see the old Jack she tells him that she just doesn’t have time to deal with whatever he’s doing right now. He sees that she’s watching the building across the street and asks her what’s going on. She tells him that someone’s after Aaron and that someone knows they’re lying. Just then Dan Norton pulls out onto the street. She tells Jack to get in or don’t. He gets in. They follow.

They arrive at a hotel; Kate’s told Jack the story on the ride. He tells Kate that the lawyer was probably lying about meeting his client but we see Carole Littleton opens her hotel door to Dan Norton. It’s Claire’s mom! Jack tells Kate that he’ll go talk to her; maybe he can explain why they did what they did. Kate just wants to run but Jack points out to her that Aaron “is my family too”. I honestly don’t think Kate knows just how “family” he is. If she did he’d have said “he’s my nephew” but instead he just makes it sound like he’s part of his life…kwim? Kate agrees to let him go.

After Dan Norton leaves Jack goes up. Carole seems a bit surprised to see him. Personally I’m kind of surprised she recognized him. It has been 3 years and she only met him once for a matter of minutes. It’s pouring out so she invites him right in. She asks how he knew she was in LA and she tells her that he followed her lawyer. She’s a little shocked and asks why he’d do that. He starts to talk about Aaron but she clearly has no idea who she’s talking about. He then asks her why she’s in LA.

Back in the car Jack frantically tells Kate that they have to go NOW. We didn’t see the entire conversation… could he have accidentally told her about Aaron and that’s why he’s rushing to leave or is it just because we don’t know who the bad guy is now? He tells her to call Sun and have her bring Aaron to the marina. Kate asks what happened he tells her Carole had no idea what he was talking about and that she’s in town to get her Oceanic settlement. He also says that “she still thinks Claire is dead”… WTH does that mean? Don’t we all think Claire is dead? Kate notes the coincidence that Carole has the same lawyer as whoever is trying to take Aaron.

Ben and Sayid pull into a parking garage. Dan Norton (!) gets out of the car beside them and tells him that Hurley will be released tomorrow as he’s got a statement from the medical examiner saying that the man outside of Santa Rosa died while Hurley was still locked up. How ironic is it that the man that DID kill the man outside of Santa Rosa is sitting right beside him. Of course, how does he explain the men at the hotel when a witness actually got a picture of Hurley there with a gun in his hands? *shrug* Ben thanks him and he leaves. Sayid asks who he was and Ben says “my lawyer.” Dum-dum-dum. How is it that Dan is both Carole and Ben’s attorney? I think he’s a “main-land Other” who Ben sent to Carole to offer to represent her against Oceanic.

As Kate and Jack arrive at the marina Kate asks why Jack called her to being with. He tells her that Sayid was attacked and the man had her address in his wallet. He tells her that he needs to get her and Aaron someplace safe. Just then she sees Ben get out of the carpet van. Fun note about the van! It reads Canton-Rainier on the side. An anagram for “reincarnation”…ooooo. Could this be hinting to Locke's lack of deadness? Technically, if Locke were to "rise again" it'd be resurretion, not reincarnation. Reincarnation is when the soul moves to another body. When Kate sees Ben she freaks a little bit. Jack tells her that it’s ok because Ben’s with him. This shocks Kate. Jack tells her that he’s helping them save all those that they left behind. Suddenly she has an epiphany… Ben sent the lawyer. Jack begins to defend him when he confesses. Another point for me! She asks who he thinks he is and why he won’t leave her and her son alone. “Because he’s not your son, Kate” Ben says.

Parked a few cars away we see Sun watching them talk. She looks back to see Aaron sleeping. On her passenger seat we see the surveillance photos and the gun that was sent to her. She picks up the gun and gets out of the car. Now, first thought would be that she’s planning to kill Ben since that’s what she told Widmore that she wanted to but both Ben and Jack are in the photos and she blames Jack for Jin’s death so maybe she’s really planning to kill Jack.

5.03 "Jughead"

Surprising discoveries are made when the "Lefties" learn who's attacking them. Desmond goes in search of Daniel's mother in hopes to help those he left behind.
I’m going to do this recap a little different. Rather then jumping around like the show does, I’m going to recap by “year”.

Flashback, about 1 year after the O6 are rescued.

Desmond runs frantically though a village in the Philippines (based on the “Mabuhay” sign, which means “Welcome” or “Long Live” in Filipino). He’s searching for a doctor named Efren Salonga. He finds him and the two rush back to Des’ boat to find Penny in active labor. I wish they hadn’t shown this in the previews because it would have been a sweet surprise. The doctor helps her deliver her baby boy. Des and Penny kiss and profess their love for one another as they gaze upon their bundle of joy.

Off the island in 2007

Des and his son, now about 2 years old, are sitting on their sailboat. They’re headed to Oxford. Des tells his son, Charlie (who could be named after Penny’s dad, but I believe he’s named after our Charlie. How sweet is that?) of the island he used to live on but hasn’t visited in many years. He’s hinting to “the” island but in reality he’s speaking of Great Britain. He tells Charlie about Scotland where his mommy and daddy fell in love. Penny joins them and tells Charlie that that’s also where daddy broke her heart (totally uncalled for, if you ask me). She also mentions how Des left out his grandfather that sent a boat load of people to the island to kill him. It’s funny here how it sounds like she’s talking about the same island. She doesn’t say “that other island” she just says “the island” like she’s still talking about the same one. I don’t think there’s anything to her comment more then just bad writing.

Des defends his choice to go back to Oxford and promises that after he’s done, he’ll be done with it for good. Penny doesn’t understand why he just remembered what Daniel asked of him 2 days ago. Des can’t explain it but knows he has to do it to save everyone left behind. Penny asks him to promise that he’ll never go back to the island. He replies “Why in God’s name would I ever want to go back there?”

At Oxford (looking quite Charlie-esque himself with the scarf and glasses) the receptionist uses her computer and tells Des that there is no record of a Faraday ever working at the university. This receptionist, Moira according to the credits, is played by the same person that played Jenna, an Oceanic employee that was working at the boarding gate of Flight 815. Coincidence? Des argues with her and says that he visited Daniel while he was working here. She asks if he remembers when that was but since it was during his time jumping, he doesn’t recall. She asks why he’s inquiring, Des just excuses himself.

As he’s leaving Des takes a detour up to the physics lab where Daniel was working. Side note… the sign for the physics lab has changed since Des’ last visit. Before it read “Physics Department Clarendon 142-08” now it reads “Physics Department Claredon 142-08” (with no “n” in Clarendon). Typo? When Des reaches Daniel’s lab he finds the door sealed with a fumigation sticker. Des breaks in anyway and finds Daniel’s lab dilapidated and abandoned. Everything is covered with tarps. He finds a broken picture frame on the floor. The photo is of Daniel and a blonde woman. As Des is looking at the maze Daniel’s rat Eloise ran, a custodian arrives. He tells Des that Oxford is covering up Daniel’s work because they’re ashamed that he was using a human subject, a young woman. The same young woman from the photo maybe?

Des tracks down the woman, Theresa. She appears to be in a coma but her sister, Abigail tells him that she’s just “away” right now. She's not unconcious but unaware of her actual surroundings. Des knows what’s happening to her, that she’s stuck time jumping like he was. Abigail tells him that Daniel abandoned her this way and that Charles Widmore has been paying for her medical support. It’s then revealed that Widmore funded all of Daniel’s research at Oxford.

Des barges into Widmore’s office and demands to know where he can find Faraday’s mother. He tells him that he knows that he funded Daniel’s research and that he’s supporting Theresa. He refuses to answer any of his questions, just wants the address. Widmore gives it to him and asks about Penny’s welfare. Side note… Widmore finds the address in the back of his book, leading me to believe that the woman’s last name falls at the end of the alphabet (more on this later…). Des takes the Los Angeles address from Widmore as he warns him that she won’t be happy to see him because she’s “a very private person”. Widmore then begs him to take Penny and go back to where ever they were hiding as this business has been going on for “many, many years” and he wants Penny to be safe from it. Really? Or do you want to follow Des so you can find Penny? I hope not. He actually seems sincere that's why I'm suspicious.

Des returns to the boat and tells Penny that Faraday’s mother has died so there’s nothing more to do. She can tell he’s lying (yeah, he’s really bad at it!) and asks for the truth. He tells her about LA but says it doesn’t matter because he promised her that this was it. He says he’ll just forget about it and any other memories he may have. She knows he can’t and tells him that she and Charlie will go to LA with him.

On the Island in 1954

Miles, Charlotte and Daniel, along with two redshirts that survived the arrow attack head to the creek to meet the remaining Lefties. Dan asks Charlotte how she’s feeling and she says that she still has a headache. I noticed here that the tank she’s wearing under her shirt is red… could this be a sign of what’s to come for Charlotte? He asks if she has blurred vision or dizzy spells. She says both, surprised that he’d know that. She asks if he knows what’s wrong with her just as the redshirts tell them they’ve arrived at the creek. No one else is there. Miles notices a trip wire and visually follows it to explosives. He shouts a warning but the redshirts trigger it and are killed. Miles, Charlotte and Daniel recover being tossed through the air by the explosives to find a group of people dressed in Army fatigues standing over them. A young blonde woman, Ellie, asks who’s in charge and Miles tells her that Daniel is. This appears to come as a surprise to Mr. Faraday. She puts her gun on Daniel and says “you just can’t stay away can you?”. At first I thought she meant Dan personally but now I’m thinking she just meant the military as a whole, since she believes that's who they are. She asks where the rest of their group is, noting that 20 survived the beach attack. Miles says that their landmines probably killed them. She says they didn’t put them there, blaming Miles’ group for planting them. Ellie and her group then begin walking the 3 to their camp.

Meanwhile, Locke, Sawyer and Juliet debate what to do with the 2 attackers they’re captured. Locke notes that they’re guns are M1 Garand that look brand new despite being 50-60 years old. Sawyer doesn’t care, he just wants to know where Locke’s been. Locke says he should be asking when he’s been. Ala a classic Back to the Future quote. Sawyer then notices that Locke’s leg and asks who shot him. Before he can answer Juliet cuts him off and reminds them that they have more important things going on now. Side note… Juliet’s a doctor. She should have been a little more concerned with Locke’s wound. It almost felt like she was trying to change the subject. I’m wondering now, did Ethan go back to the barracks and tell them of John Locke? Did Juliet already know who shot him? Does she know more? When the 2 attackers begin speaking to each other in a foreign language, Juliet reveals that she knows it. Latin. They’re Others. The Others are required to speak Latin because it’s the “enlightened language”. Juliet asks them to take them to their camp and notes that they are not enemies. She asks if Richard Alpert is at the camp. Locke recognizes Richard’s name. Just as “Cunningham” is about to give them directions, “Jones” breaks his neck and runs. Sawyer directs Locke to shoot him but he freezes. Sawyer takes the gun and shoots but misses. Locke tells Sawyer that he couldn’t shoot him because he’s “one of my people”.

As Miles, Charlotte and Dan are taken to the camp Dan notices bandages on one of their captor’s hands. Just then Miles begins to act erratically and tells Daniel that they just walked over a fresh grave that’s less than a month old. Four US soldiers; three were shot and the fourth died of radiation poisoning. Daniel asks if the soldiers told him what year it was. He didn’t get to answer because they arrived at the camp. They are introduced to an ageless Richard Alpert. He believes the 3 to be US military who’ve come to retrieve “the bomb”.

They’re shoved into a tent where Daniel tell Miles and Charlotte to play along. Richard comes in and asks where the rest of their squad is. Daniel says he won’t tell because Richard will just kill them. Richard tells Dan that he didn’t start the attacking “their” people did. Dan says that they’re just scientists and noting the burns on one of the Others, says he believes that the casing on the bomb is cracked and they need him to fix it so it doesn’t detonate. Richard asks how he knows he’s not just on some suicide mission and plans to detonate the bomb and kill them all. Dan tells him that he’s in love with Charlotte and would never do anything to hurt her. After Richard leaves, Charlotte tells Dan that he didn’t have to lie like that and he tells her that he wasn’t lying. Just then, Ellie comes to take Dan to the bomb.

Outside of the tent Richard explains to Daniel that they were living peacefully on the island when they found 18 members of an Army battalion in the jungle. He gave them the opportunity to leave but they refused. He was forced to kill them. Dan emphasizes “forced?” and Richard tells him that he gets his orders just as Dan does. Just then “Jones” comes running into the camp and says “Cunningham” and I (what about the guy that Locked knifed down?) were outnumbered and captured. Ellie makes a snide remark about being outnumbered and “Jones” tells her to "shut up Ellie". (Remember this because I’ll be referring to it later…). Richard asks how he got away and how he was sure he wasn’t followed. He tells Richard that they’re leader is an “old man” that couldn’t track him and doesn’t know the island as well as he does.

Right up above the camp, we see the “old man”, who DID track him and DOES know the island better then him. He asks Juliet how she knew that Richard would be there and she tells him that “Richard has always been here”. When he ask just how old he is she tells him (ala One-Word-Ben) “old”. Locke tells Juliet that he’s going down to the camp to have a chat with Richard. He tells her about they talk they were having before the island moved. Sawyer notes that Daniel is being “death marched” into the jungle at the moment. Locke tells him that he can take care of Dan; he’s going to talk to Richard.
As Dan and Ellie walk to the bomb he notes that “you look so much like…someone I used to know” (remember this too…). Ellie tells him that she doesn’t believe that him, “a British woman and a Chinese man” are US military (keen eye on that one). She asks who they really are and he tells her that he’s her best chance at disarming the bomb. She tells him to get to it as he turns and sees a HUGE bomb.

Daniel climbs the firing tower where the bomb hangs to inspect it. Ellie stays below, gun on him. He inspects it and sees a crack. He climbs down and instructs Ellie to step back. He tells her it’s dangerous and warns her of the outcome should she shoot him. He tells her that the bomb needs to be buried and asks if they have access to any lead or concrete. Immediately I thought of the hatch. Yes, “the” hatch. Read this bit of transcript from “Everybody Hates Hugo” where Jack and Sayid are poking around the Swan station (aka the hatch) after Desmond ditches it…

SAYID: I believe we're under the area where we began. They poured concrete all the way down here, too.
[Sayid starts hitting the wall with the piece of metal.]
SAYID: Just as thick.
JACK: Maybe there's a way around it.
[They crawl forward though what looks like pipes.]
JACK: What is all this stuff?
SAYID: My best guess? There's geothermal generator behind this wall. That's the power source. Careful with these pipes, they're very hot.
[They come to the end of the tunnel.]
JACK: That's it -- nothing -- it's blocked. So what do you think, Sayid?
SAYID: What do I think about what, Jack?
JACK: This place -- the computer? What do you think is going on?
SAYID: The last time I heard of concrete being poured over everything in this way was Chernobyl.

I’m guessing that that’s where this bomb was buried. I bet, somehow, pushing the button every 108 minutes kept it from detonating. That fail-safe that Des turned detonated it and the rest is history. Anyway, on with the story… Ellie asks why he thinks burying it will keep it from detonating and he says he just knows. Finally he blurts out that he knows because the island is still there in 50 years. He explains that that’s where he and his friends are from just as Sawyer comes out of the jungle, armed, and tells Ellie to drop her gun. Juliet follows, and tells everyone to drop their guns. Ellie drops hers and Juliet picks it up just as Sawyer notices the bomb. Ellie asks “are they from the future too?” Sawyer can’t believe he told her.

Back at the camp Locke barges in and yells for Richard. “Jones” sees him and pulls his gun directing him to stop. Richard appears just as “Jones” puts his gun in Locke’s back. Richard asks who he is. “John Locke”. After a short pause, and no expression, Richard asks if that should mean something to him. This is interesting because Richard has known John since, literally, the day he was born, as we’ve learned from flashbacks. John tells him “Jacob sent me”. Boy is he lucky here. He has no idea “when” he is. What makes him so sure that Jacob is the leader at the time? With that Richard orders “Jones” to put his gun down. When he doesn’t Richard walks over and slaps the rifle down and says “I said put the gun down… Widmore”. LOVE THIS SHOW! Locke turns to Widmore and asks if it’s “Charles Widmore”… “What’s it to you?” he asks. “Nothing.” Locke says, “Nice to meet you”. Side note….it’s pretty safe to assume that these men got their military outfits off the 18 dead soldiers. Hence, “Jones” is not a “Jones” at all but rather a “Widmore”. Why then does he refer to his friend as Cunningham when his uniform DOES say Cunningham? Did he really get that lucky and kill a soldier with the same name?

And now for all those things I asked you to remember… I think that Ellie is Daniel’s mother and that’s why he recognizes her. At first I thought that maybe Widmore was his father since he was funding all his research and then took it upon himself to care for the woman it harmed. But after hearing the way they talked to one another I think they may be brother and sister, making Daniel Widmore’s nephew. To further prove my theory, Widmore got her address for Desmond from the back of his address book, leading me to believe her last name was more likely Widmore then Faraday.

On with the story… Inside a tent at the camp Locke explains to Richard how he came about his compass, explaining to us how Richard knew where to be. Richard is having a hard time swallowing his time-travel story which means that this is the first he’s learned of the islands capabilities. Locke tells Richard that he was about to tell him how to get off the island when it last moved. Richard tells him that he doubts that since that’s “very privileged information”. Locke says he’d tell him because he’s his leader. Richard scoffs and says that the have a very specific process for selecting they’re leaders and it starts at a very young age. Locke asks what year it is and tells him that he’ll be born in 2 years… “I suggest you come visit me” he tells him. LOVE THIS SHOW! That explains why Richard doesn't know him, he hasn't been to his birth yet.

Just then Locke hears the humming indicating that the island is about to move again. This time Richard does not hear it. He asks Locke what’s wrong, he tells him that it’s about to happen again and he needs to tell he how to get off the island. Flash… island moves. I’m sure Locke disappearing before his eyes has now convinced the 1954 Richard that he was telling the truth. Guess that's why he wasted no time giving him that "very privileged information" so quickly during their future encounter.

Locke now stands in an open field, no tents. Nearby Miles and Charlotte stand with their hands tied as they were in the tent. Approaching, Daniel calls out the Charlotte and asks if she’s ok. She says she is while Miles notes he is as well, even though he wasn’t asked. Just then Charlotte collapse with another bloody nose. Daniel holds her and cries as though she’s died.

Now, when Richard comes to Locke’s aid and removes the bullet and tells him that “privileged information” on how to get off the island. He has to die. What Locke really needs is more details. Does this mean that every time Richard leaves, he has to die? When he went to recruit Juliet, did he have to die? When he went to see Locke’s birth, did he have to die? Are the Others that live on the mainland there to revive him? Does this mean, like I said before, that Jeremy Bentham can be revived? Locke is NOT dead people! LOVE THIS SHOW! Have I mentioned that?

5.02 "The Lie"

Hurley's feeling guilty about those left behind. The "Lefties" start to feel the effects of time-jumping while Ben and Jack start planning how to reunite the O6.
We open on the Searcher, Penny’s boat, shortly after the O6 are rescued. They’ve discussed the lie they’re going to tell to protect those they left behind from Charles Widmore. Everyone reluctantly agrees (except Fariday who says he’ll roll with whatever) to go along with the lie except Hurley. He asks if Penny can just get her dad to back off but she says she can’t. Jack says no one’s going to believe them even if they told the truth and if Hurley does, everyone will think he’s crazy. He says they won’t if someone backs him up. He looks to Sayid who says he agrees with Jack. Hurley’s angry with him and says he’ll remember this and won’t be there for Sayid should he ever need him.

3 years later… Hurley’s driving like a crazy man with an unconscious Sayid in the passenger seat. While trying to put Sayid’s seatbelt on, he hits a newspaper vending machine, he gets pulled over. Immediately I thought, “it’s going to be Anna Lucia” but I couldn’t figure out *how* it’d be her. Luckily, the-powers-that-be figured out a way.. it’s Anna Lucia! LOVE THIS SHOW! Hurley looks shocked… by now you’d think this was second nature to him; seeing dead people and all. She tells him to be careful before he gets caught. She tells him to get new clothes, get someplace safe and get Sayid to someone he trusts. She tells him to stay away from the cops and “DO NOT get arrested”. After her pep talk she says “Libby says hi” and walks off. Hurley looks to see the cruiser behind him but it’s gone.

Back on the island… our last time shift happened while Des and Daniel were talking. We’re not sure “when” we are now since we weren’t shown what the hatch looked like after this flash.

On the beach the group is arguing about fire and food and how they have no control over when the island will move again. Sawyer finds a shirt and asks whose it is. It’s Frogurt’s. He asks if he can have it, Frogurt doesn’t care. Side note: the sci-fi world refers to the extras that get killed off as “redshirts”. You’ll notice that Neil is actually *wearing* a red shirt. Sad thing is… the shirt Sawyer just borrowed from him… red. Dan comes out of the jungle and tells the others that he got lost, that’s why he was so far behind them. Juliet wants to take the Zodiac (the raft) out to a shipping lane in hopes to find rescue but Dan says that he needs to figure out where they are first so they can take the correct bearing. In the meantime, Miles sets out to find food, Sawyer and Juliet to find water.

Hurley stops at a gas station to buy a new shirt. After swiping money from Sayid’s wallet (what was with the long blonde hair on his black shirt?) he goes in and picks out a t-shirt. The only one that fits says “I Y my Shih-Tzu”. The girl at the counter is worth every penny of her minimum wage… Hurley’s ON her TV because he’s a fugitive but she recognizes him from when he won the lottery like 4 years ago and *then* because he was part of the O6, 3 years ago. He says nope, not him, throws some money at her, tells her to keep the change and leaves.

As he pulls out of the parking lot, Kate pulls in. Small world huh? She parks her car, Aaron’s in the back seat coloring (shouldn’t he be in a car seat of some sort?). She looks flustered. Again, second nature should be taking over here. She’s lived half her life on the run. She pulls a map from her glove box then picks up her cell and debates calling Jack. Just as she decides not to, she receives a call. It comes up as an unknown number. Side note here… if *I* were on the run not only would I not be answering an unknown number phone call but I’d probably have ditched the phone long ago since “The Man” can track your whereabouts with those things. She answers and sounds excited to hear from whoever’s on the other end. She agrees to meet with them in a half hour.

Ben’s removing a vent cover in his hotel room and removes a box. Hmm…the things that could be in that box. My guess? His weapon (that black stick) and whatever he needs to revive “dead” Locke. Yeah, I don’t think he’s dead. Jack comes into the room looking for his pills but Ben tells him he’s flushed them. He says that was his plan. He asks where they’re going when he sees that Ben’s packing. Ben tells Jack to go home and pack a suit case with whatever he wants from this life because he won’t be coming back. “Good” he says. Jack asks what Ben’s going to do. He says he can’t leave Locke in the van. He has to put him somewhere safe. Jack notes that he’s dead… right? Ben doesn’t answer. HA! Told you! Ben says he’ll pick him up in 6 hours.

At Hurley’s mansion, his dad is making himself the grossest sandwich I’ve ever seen. He then plops down to watch Expose. If you remember… Expose was the soap opera that Nikki was on. Nikki was the girl that was buried alive on the island after everyone believed her and her boyfriend were dead from a spider bite. There’s a knock on the back door. It’s Hurley with an unconscious Sayid. He asks him if he’s seen the news but he says he just got up (ah, lap of luxury). His mom’s out shopping. They confirm that he’s alive and Hurley tells him what’s been going on just as the police show up. Hurley asks him to lie to them. The officers leave but wait in their car outside. Hurley’s dad says he thinks they should call a lawyer but he says they can’t because someone’s after them. He doesn’t even want to take Sayid to the hospital. His dad says they need to get Sayid a doctor. Hurley knows what to do.

Kate and Aaron are in a hotel and go to the top floor (#31). They’re meeting Sun.

Ben arrives at a butcher shop. (FYI – All we’ve ever learned of Charlie’s father was from a dream he had in the episode “Fire & Water”. In the dream his father was angry that his mother had bought him a piano for Christmas because he wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become…dum, dum, dum… a butcher!) Ben pulls #342 (42! Numbers alert!). Jill the butcher knows him. She even knows what’s in the van. Ben asks if she can watch him for him. He also asks if Gabriel and Jeffrey have checked in. Could they be Kate’s lawyers? She says yes, and that everything is moving right on schedule. She asks how things are going with Jack and jokes that he probably had to be bribed with pills. Ben defends him and she apologizes. He tells her to take good care of Locke because if she doesn’t everything they’re “about to do won’t matter at all”.

Night arrives on the beach without anymore flashes. They’re still trying to build a fire and get it to spark but it goes out. Neil (Frogurt) starts throwing a tantrum. Rose tells him to take a time out.

Charlotte brings Daniel a mango that she found in the jungle. He asks how she’s feeling; referring to the nosebleed she’d had earlier. She said she has a headache that she can’t shake. She tells him that she also forgot her mother’s maiden name earlier in the day. Daniel writes it off to stress but she can see that he knows something more. Just then Miles comes out of the jungle with a dead boar. He tells them that he’d found it and it’s only been dead for 3 hours. He can see the spirits of dead animals too huh? He asks if anyone has a knife and Neil starts another tantrum. He starts calling people names and complains that they can’t even get FIRE! Just then a flaming arrow comes flying through the sky and kills him. Suddenly the sky is full of flaming arrows. The group runs for the jungle as Sawyer yells to them to spilt up and meet at the creek.

Hurley’s dad asks him if he’s crazy. If he’s not, he’s lying. Hurley says he has a good reason for lying. Just then Hurley’s mom comes home asking about the dead guy on the couch. I’m wondering now if Locke and Sayid have been drugged with the same thing. Sayid’s been mistaken for dead twice now, that’s a powerful drug! Hurley says it’s time to go, now. Hurley’s dad sneaks Sayid out while Hurley stays behind with his mother.

While enjoying tea, Sun tells Kate that she’s in LA on business. She sees that Kate seems tense. After double-checking that Aaron’s sleeping she tells Sun about the lawyers. Sun says that it sounds to her that because they weren’t more aggressive, the client probably just wants to get Aaron from her rather then exposing their lie. Sun hints that Kate should kill whoever it is to protect Aaron. Kate’s offended by Sun’s assumption that she could just kill someone like that. Sun then mentions how Kate had promised to get Jin on the freighter but instead saved herself. She says that she doesn’t blame her because she was doing what she had to do. I’m not sure how I feel about this. She’s coming off as though she does blame Kate but then again, she could just be defending her actions for sending the lawyers the Kate’s house. Doing what “she has to do” to get to Ben maybe? I find it suspicious that she’s in LA and calls Kate the very same day she’s visited by the lawyers. She then asks Kate “so, how’s Jack”.

Jack meets Hurley’s dad and takes Sayid from him. Jack says Sayid needs to go to the hospital and to trust him as Hurley did. Hurley’s dad tells Jack to stay away from Hurley now. Jack takes Sayid and calls Ben. He tells him that he has Sayid.

Sawyer and Juliet clear the attack and head for the creek. Sawyer is still shoe-less and steps on something. He pulls it from just below his big toe just as he and Juliet hear something. They hide beneath bushes and see 3 sets of legs walk by. As they argue about who the people were, 3 men grab them from behind. They ask “What are you doing on our island?” with a British accent.

Back at home Hurley tells his mom the truth about everything. As wild as it sounds she tells him that she sincerely believes him.

In the hospital Jack checks Sayid’s vitals then tries to resuscitate him by giving him adrenaline. It takes a minute and Jack almost thinks it’s not working when Sayid awakes and immediate starts to strangle Jack before he realizes who he is. He asks what happened and Jack tells him that Hurley’s father brought him to him. He asks where Hurley is. Jack tells him that he’s at home, probably with is mother.

Later that night, while heating up a Hot Pocket, Ben greets Hurley from his back door. Hurley pitches the Hot Pocket at him, which made me literally laugh out loud. OMG was that funny! And the look on Ben’s face was priceless. Ben offers to take Hurley back to the island so he never has to lie again. Ben’s sweet talking appears to be working then suddenly Hurley says “Never dude” and bursts out the door and runs to the police sitting outside. He confesses to killing 3 or 4 people “however many are dead”. Figuring he’d be safe from Ben in jail. WTH, isn’t he doing exact what Anna Lucia told him NOT to do?

The men threaten to cut off Juliet’s “other hand” if Sawyer doesn’t start giving answers. “The first one’s not negotiable” he explains. Just as they’re about the cut off the first, rocks come flying through the air. 2 of the men are knocked down, Juliet grabs a gun and holds it on one. As Sawyer takes down the 3rd the other goes after Sawyer when a knife comes flying through the air and kills him. Bad-ass Locke is back. My first thought was that the flying arrows were coming from the crew of the Black Rock since they were such “old school” weapons but these men look to be 1940s military so that’d be way after the Black Rock. I’m stumped.

In our last scene we see a cloaked woman scribbling mathematical formula on a chalk board. Instantly we’re reminded of Daniel back at Oxford that day that Des visited him. This also could lead us to believe that this woman may be Daniel’s mother. She types some of her numbers into an old computer which then displays “EVENT WINDOW DETERMINED”. We also see a giant pendulum drawing out a large asterisks on a map. She leaves the room through a large hatch door and then climbs a flight of stairs to a church. We see Ben has been waiting for her. He asks if she’s had any luck and she says “yes, how about you?” He tells her that he’s having some difficulties. She tells him he better get busy because he’s only got 70 hours. He tells her that’s not enough time but she doesn’t care. She removes her hood to reveal that she’s Ms. Hawking. You’ll remember her from when Des was leaping time in "The Constant" and visited her store to buy an engagement ring for Penny. Below is a transcript of their meeting.

[Cut to a close up of wedding rings in a display counter.]

MS. HAWKING: Never done this before have you?

[Camera reveals Desmond in a second hand shop.]

DESMOND: Is it that obvious?

MS. HAWKING: I can always tell the first timers. Well, then, may I ask your price range?

DESMOND: I'm not a man of means...

MS. HAWKING: Oh...

DESMOND: I hope to -- one day...

MS. HAWKING: I have just the thing.

[she shows him a ring]

This won't blind any queens, to be sure, but still has the sparkle of life.

DESMOND: I'll take it.

MS. HAWKING [surprised]: I'm sorry?

DESMOND: It's perfect. I'll take it.

MS. HAWKING: No you won't. Give me the ring. Give it here.

DESMOND: I don't understand.

MS. HAWKING: This is wrong. You don't buy the ring. You have second thoughts; you walk right out that door. So, come on, let's have it.

DESMOND: I don't know what you're on about.

MS. HAWKING: You don't buy the ring, Desmond.

DESMOND: How do you know my name?

MS. HAWKING: Well, I know your name as well as I know that you that don't ask Penny to marry you. In fact, you break her heart. Well, breaking her heart is, of course, what drives you in a few short years from now to enter that sailing race -- to prove her father wrong -- which brings you to the island where you spend the next 3 years of your life entering numbers into the computer until you are forced to turn that failsafe key. And if you don't do those things, Desmond David Hume, every single one of us is dead. So give me that sodding ring.

MS. HAWKING [when Desmond doesn't give her the ring]: Oh, you're going to be difficult about this, I can see.

DESMOND: Who are you?

MS. HAWKING: Do you like chestnuts?

DESMOND: What?

[Scene switches to Ms. Hawking buying chestnuts from a street vendor.]

MS. HAWKING: Thank you.

[She notices a man climbing stairs from the Underground.]

MS. HAWKING: That man over there is wearing red shoes.

DESMOND: So, what then?

MS. HAWKING: Just thought it was a bold fashion choice worth noting.

DESMOND: This isn't really happening, is it?

MS. HAWKING: Sorry?

DESMOND: I've had a concussion. You're my subconscious.

MS. HAWKING [amused]: Am I?

DESMOND: You're here to talk me out of marrying Penny. Well, it won't bloody work.

MS. HAWKING: Oh, yes it will.

DESMOND: No, there is no island. There is no button. It's madness. I love her. She loves me. I'm going to spend the rest of my life with her.

MS. HAWKING: No, Desmond, you're not.

[Suddenly, there is a loud crash behind the bench Ms. Hawking and Desmond have been sitting on. Some scaffolding has fallen and killed the man with red shoes.]

DESMOND: Oh, my God. You knew that was going to happen, didn't you? [she nods] Then why didn't you stop it? Why didn't you do anything?

MS. HAWKING: Because it wouldn't matter. Had I warned him about the scaffolding tomorrow he'd be hit by a taxi. If I warned him about the taxi, he'd fall in the shower and break his neck. The universe, unfortunately, has a way of course correcting. That man was supposed to die. That was his path just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond. You do it because you're supposed to.

DESMOND: I'm going to meet Penny in an hour. I've got the ring; she'll say yes; I can choose whatever I want.

MS. HAWKING: You may not like your path, Desmond, but pushing that button is the only truly great thing that you will ever do.

DESMOND: How much for the ring?

[Ms. Hawking looks disappointed and walks away.]

Ben asks what happens if he can’t get them all back and she says “God help us all”. Word for word what Pierre Chang said to the foreman about drilling any closer to the "frozen donkey wheel".

5.01 "Because You Left"

Season 5 opens with a missing island, the O6 trying to live normal lives and the "Lefties" trying to figure out what's happening to them and the island.
We open on an alarm clock going off at 8:15 (hmm, 8:15, where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, Oceanic flight 815…) and a baby is crying. Wish my kids slept until 8:15. A woman rolls to a man and tells him it’s his turn. He gets up, puts on a record (priorities) ala Desmond style (the song btw is Willie Nelson’s Shotgun Willie), and feeds the baby. Doesn’t seem all that interested in the kid IMO. FYI: at this summer’s Comic Con there was a video of this man doing his filming while a baby cries off camera. He stops taping and yells at a woman to get “him out of here”. It’s pretty safe to assume that “he” is the baby he has here. Next question… who’s the baby? Could it be Miles? Could it be Jin? Could it be no one we’ve met? Probably not. My official vote is Miles. On with the story…he showers, shaves, brushes his teeth and as he’s getting clothes (which all look the same btw) the record begins skipping (“if you can’t make a record, can’t make a record, can’t make a record). When he leaves we recognize his little town as Otherville (aka: the barracks). A woman walks by quickly that appears to be a few months pregnant. Looks like having babies isn’t a problem right now. “He” is Dr. Marvin Candle aka Dr. Edgar Halliwax aka Dr. Mark Wickmund aka Pierre Chang. He’s huffy and pushes away the script as it’s being handed to him. Says he knows his lines. The clapper says it take one of the second DHARMA Initiative orientation video, this time for the Arrow station. (Why is he wearing a Swan coat while filming an Arrow video?) We saw a small section of the Arrow station when the Tailies discovered it and used it for shelter. They found a box that contained a glass eye, a radio and a Bible which contained the cut out portions of some of the orientation videos. While shooting he’s interrupted by a man (Eric, according to his jumper) saying that there is trouble at the Orchid.

They pull up in what I think is the only vehicle Otherville has, the blue VW bus. We see a brand-new-under-construction Orchid which looks so much different than the Orchid Locke was just in. A worker takes him to the lower level via the elevator where he says they’ve ruined 6 drill bits (melted 1 even) trying to get through the wall (where there are only 5 holes, so I’m guessing the 6th melted before it got anywhere) and the worker is now “freaking out” (and his nose is bleeding). The foreman tells Chang that he took a sonar image of what’s behind the wall and the image reveals the “frozen donkey wheel” (this is a nickname given by the shows producers) Ben turned to move the island. Chang tells the foreman to stop drilling and tells him of the energy and time manipulation possibilities held behind that wall. The foreman cracks a joke about killing Hitler but Chang tells him they can’t do that because there “are rules, rules that can’t be broken”. He tells the worker that if he drills even 1cm further they’d risk releasing the energy and if that were to happen well, “God help us all”. As he leaves he bumps into a worker, who I knew immediately was Daniel just because of the way he was carrying himself. Now… what was Daniel doing there? My guess is that the island will ‘leap’ to this time and he’ll sneak away to see where all this time-travel stuff started. What he’ll do there… only time will tell. He didn’t look as excited as someone who’s spent his life studying time travel would be so I’m guessing he’s up to no good.

Jack stands over John’s casket. Ben asks him to close it and get him in the van. I got the vibe here that he thinks Jack might see Locke move or something. Jack tells Ben that he’ll never be able to convince the other 5 O6 to return. He wonders why so many bad things have happened. Ben coldly tells him “It happened because you left”.

At a hotel Jack shaves and asks Ben’s plan. I’m guessing that Locke is in the van now. They’re plan is to get Hurley first because he should be the easiest, since he’s crazy and all. Jack asks when the last time was that Ben saw Locke. Ben reveals to Jack that he hasn’t seen him since the day he left the island. He asks Jack what John told him. He told him that everyone they’d left behind would die too. Ben asks if he told him what happened after they left and he says no. Ben looks disappointed and says “then I guess we’ll never know”. I think though that he does know. I personally believe that Widmore put Ben in charge of the island when *he* moved it years ago.

Three years earlier… We’re now on the island, immediately following the flash of light. Locke finds that the Others have disappeared and he’s standing alone in the rain. We see Daniel, on the boat, with some Losties (including, Neil, one we’ve never met before). Daniel sees the island and notes that the must have been “inside the radius” when it moved. On the beach Sawyer and Juliet notice that the burning freighter is gone as Bernard bursts from the jungle yelling for Rose. When she emerges they tell Sawyer and Juliet that the camp has disappeared. Just like to point out here that it’s interesting how it’s only raining over Locke.

Daniel arrives back on the island to Charlotte’s joy because she thought he was on the doomed freighter. He asks to be taken to the closest man-made structure. Juliet tells him of the Swan, the hatch that was blown up. He says they should get moving before “it” happens again. Sawyer asks what “it” is and why the camp has disappeared. He tells them that the camp has not disappeared, it hasn’t been built yet.

LOST

In LA, Kate and Aaron enjoy breakfast and cartoons. The doorbell rings. It’s an attorney and his “associate” there to retrieve blood samples from Kate and Aaron to determine her relationship to him. She asks who he’s representing but he says he can’t tell her. She tells him to come back with the sheriff. Kate packs a bag, grabs some hidden money and a hidden gun and she and Aaron leave. I don’t see any reason why he can’t tell her who is client is, but I’m no lawyer. It seems to me that someone is just trying to scare her into going on the run. My personally opinion… Ben. I think he’s trying to scare Kate into going back to the island so she won’t lose Aaron.

As they head to the Swan Juliet asks Sawyer why he jumped from the helicopter. He’s says it was because he wanted to make sure she… err, they got to the freighter. “Doesn’t matter now” he says, believing that the chopper went down with the freighter. Daniel asks them to beat feet saying that they don’t know how long they have until it happens again. Sawyer tells him to hold up and tries to bully him into giving him his shirt. You’d think he’d want some shoes instead… but whatever. I thought Dan might cave here since he’s such a nerd but he tells him they have more pressing matters right now. Sawyer tells him to explain himself, he says he can’t. Sawyer bitch slaps him and threatens to do the same to Charlotte after she yells at him. Suddenly Daniel *can* explain it. He tells them that either they or the island is skipping through time because of what Ben did. He suggests that it’s probably them. I’m confused here, no surprise considering the show, but why would the island disappear from view if it’s just skipping through time? It’s not like they’ve gone so far back that they island wasn’t there at all… if that were the case, they’d be underwater right? Des and even Daniel’s rat way back at Oxford didn’t physically disappear when they leapt through time, why has the island? Anyway, Daniel then asks if they’re whole group is accounted for. Sawyer says Locke is missing what about Claire?).

Back to Locke… and no more rain. He’s climbing a hill which immediately reminded me of the hill the group climbs in the first season to try to get a signal on they’re sat phone only to pick up Rousseau’s message. He sees something in the distance and narrowly misses being hit by a low-flying plane. He watches it crash in the jungle and notices a Virgin Mary statue on the ground where it’d passed. Could it be? Interesting. LOVE THIS SHOW BTW! Being the super-tracker he is, he finds the plane and it’s the very Beechcraft that he and Boone had found… years after it’d initially crashed. He calls up to it and climbs to search for survivors when he’s suddenly being shot at from the ground. He gets hit in the leg and falls. Side note… if you’ll remember when he and Boone were here, he was unable to walk, believing the island was making him paralyzed again for not “believing” in it. Could it have been that he was suffering the pain from the Locke that was shot there years earlier? The shooter reveals himself to be Ethan! LOVE THIS SHOW, OMG! Locke is stunned. I’m excited! As Ethan threatens to kill him Locke tells him he knows him, and tries to explain who he is. When he tells him that Ben has made him leader of the Others, Ethan claims that “that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard” and prepares to shoot him. Just then the white light appears, though Ethan doesn’t appear to notice it, and time shifts again, saving Locke’s life. It’s now night.

It is night with the beach group as well. Sawyer asks “when” they are. Daniel brilliantly deducts that they are “either in the past (long pause) or in the future”. Duh. *Now* is when you should slap him, Sawyer.

In London airport, Sun is leaving for LA. She’s trying to make a call but there is no answer. After presenting her passport she’s detained by security. She comes to find out she’s been detained at Charles Widmore’s request. Widmore tells her not to bother trying to get out “they do what I tell them”. (Does this mean he *owns* Oceanic? That’d explain how one of their planes got to the bottom of the ocean.) He’s angry with her for approaching him in broad daylight and showing him no respect. He asks what, exactly, their “common interests” are. She tells him “to kill Benjamin Linus”.
Snore.

In their hotel room Jack and Ben see a news report about Hurley’s escape from Santa Rosa and the dead man found outside that they believe he killed. Ben believes getting them back to the island is going to be a bit more complicated now.

Hurley has Sayid stop for lunch at the Rainbow Drive-In (a real place in Hawaii btw). That Hurley sure loves his chicken. Speaking of the chicken, the sign on the building is reflected in the puddle on the ground but it’s not a reflection at all. Take a look at this screencap…

What could this mean? Is it some kind of clue?

They then head to the safe house. Hurley asks Sayid who the guy outside the hospital was. Sayid says he doesn’t care, he was armed and he’s not taking any risks since Bentham died. Hurley says “you mean Locke?” Oh, *now* they can say it? Pfftt. Hurley then says he needs cool code name. LOL Dude’s funny stuff. Hurley asks Sayid why he’s so paranoid. He tells him that he’s been working for Ben. When Hurley asks if he’s on their side now Sayid tells Hurley to never, ever trust Ben and always do the opposite of what he says. Sayid then notices that the piece of tape he placed over the hotel room door has been broken meaning someone’s inside. He’s then attacked by a man from inside the room and quickly tosses him over the balcony. Inside the room another man attacks. Sayid kills him as well (and shows us all why knives should be put in the dishwasher handle up!) but not before being hit by 2 darts. Outside the room Hurley picks up the gun on the ground a looks over the balcony. Some people that have noticed the dead body of the first man see Hurley with the gun and take his picture. Hurley runs inside and helps Sayid out to the car just before the dart kicks in and renders him unconscious. As they stumble out Hurley notes that they “never should have left that island”.

It’s still night and the beach group has arrived at the Hatch, which is nothing more than a crater. This leads them to conclude that they’ve already blown it up. Sawyer and Juliet try to argue that they could stop the helicopter from leaving now and save their friends. Daniel explains to them that they can’t change anything. If it’s happened, there’s no way to stop it or change it. Sawyer asks him how he knows so much about it. Daniel pulls out his journal and tells him he’s studied the DHARAM Initiative and knows all about space/time travel. Sawyer asks how to stop it, Dan says they can’t. “Who can?” Sawyer asks.

The Beechcraft is on the ground now, indicating that it’s after Boone’s death. Locke climbs in and takes a seatbelt to tie around his wounded leg. He sees someone approaching carrying a torch. I SO wanted it to Charlie sneaking to the plane for a fix but no… it’s Richard. Somehow he knew exactly where Locke would be (I’m guessing, in the future Locke will tell him of this moment and Richard will act accordingly). Locke tells him of the bullet, Richard says he told him, or will tell him. Locke says Ethan shot him, Richard says “what comes around, goes around” because Charlie ends up shooting Ethan. Richard removes Locke’s bullet and tells him that the next time they meet he won’t know Locke. He gives him a compass and tells him to give it to him the next time he sees him. Locke asks what it does, Richard simply states “it points north, John”. Legitimate question if you ask me. (You may recognize this compass from when Richard visits John as a child and “tests” him.) He tells John that the only way to save the island now is to get back those who left. So why the hell did you and Ben let them leave? *shakes head* Locke asks how he’s supposed to do that, Richard says he’ll have to die. Another flash, unnoticed by Richard, and it’s day again. The Beechcraft is again atop the cliff and smoking. You’d think Ethan would still be there searching the plane since that’s where he thought Locke came from…. but he’s not. He probably freaked out when Locke disappeared before his eyes and ran straight to Ben.

The beach group now finds that the hatch is intact. Sawyer bolts into the jungle, telling the group that he’s going in through the back door to get Des to give them some supplies. Daniel tries to tell him that he can’t talk to Desmond. It didn’t happen before, it can’t happen now. Sawyer knocks, no one answers. They decide to head back to the beach. Why did they come out here to begin with? Wasn’t Daniel all frantic about finding something man-made? I’m confused again. Maybe it was just to try to get a better idea of “when” exactly they were. Juliet, Sawyer and Miles leave as Daniel notices that Charlotte’s nose is bleeding. She tells him that she hasn’t had a nosebleed since she was little. Daniel knows what’s going on. Do we? We know that those that time travel need a “constant”. Something that’s there, past, present and future, that you recognize. If you don’t have one, you’ll suffer a brain aneurysm and die. The nosebleed it the first sign that it’s happening. Only catch here is that when Des was time traveling it was only his consciousness, not his physical body. Could just the actual movement be causing this nosebleed? Would a constant really help her? Daniel tells Charlotte that he forgot his pack and will be right behind them as soon as he gets it. Alone with the back door, Daniel tries knocking on it himself after looking at his journal. Desmond answers dressed in his protective gear (remember, he stayed in there because he was told that the air outside was not safe) and toting a rifle. Des asks Daniel if he’s “the one”… his “replacement”. Dan says no. Des asks if he knows Daniel and he tells him “sort of”. We begin to hear the hum sound indicating that the island is about to move again. Odd thing is, Des hears it too, unlike Ethan or Richard. Generally, only those that are actually moving with the island hear the sound and see the light. Quickly Daniel tells him that he’s special and “the rules” of the island don’t seem to apply to him. He tells him that when he leaves the island on the helicopter, those he left behind will be in grave danger and only he can save them. Daniel instructs a confused Des to go to Oxford and find his mother. The flash occurs before he can give him her name.

Desmond awakes with a start to find Penny at his side. He says he was on the island. Penny notes that he’s been off of it for 3 years now; it was just a bad dream (she’s wearing a wedding band here, leading me to believe they’re now married). Des says it wasn’t a dream, it was a memory. He runs outside to raise the anchor. When Penny asks where they’re going Des tells her, to Oxford.

LOST

This time leaping thing is AWESOME! We can learn so much if they keep up with it. Who are the skeletons found in the caves (aka: Adam & Eve)? How did the Black Rock get to the middle of the island? What happened to Rousseau's people? What s that 4-toed statue we saw once for a brief moment and then never saw again? This is going to be so cool!
