5.13 "Some Like it Hoth"

Miles' connection to the island is revealed. Roger learns that Ben has vanished.

-So we jump right into it. Miles is Dr. Chang's son. In case you didn't recognize her, Lara is the same woman that was in bed with Dr. Chang in the season premiere. I know you love when I point this out but I TOTALLY called that. Go back and check if you don't believe me. LOL

-Mom tells Miles that he's supposed to be waiting by the pool. *sigh* No mother is going to tell her young child to "go wait by the pool". Duh.

-What exactly does Miles expect to get out of that vending machine with a quarter? Doesn't matter... he's having a vision.

-In Korea, Japan and China the number 4 is considered bad luck. It's even the homonym for the word "death". The room where Little Miles finds the dead man was #4.

-This is either the first time Miles "powers" work or just the first time he's told him mother about them because she seems genuinely freaked out.

-Sawyer asks Miles to erase the tape from security camera #4. Hmmm... what number?

-"The Circle of Trust". Are you kidding me?

-Are we getting closer to the episode where Radzinsky shots himself in the head yet... because I won't be sad when that day arrives. Gah!

-I know it all works out just fine, but I still think Miles should have maybe driven up the road a bit before he ripped open the body bag and started chatting with the dead guy. Radzinsky could bounce out of the jungle at any time.

-Wait? Miles mother still rented an apartment where her son was traumatized. What's with the mothers on this show?

-Ok, what's with the flashback costume and makeup? If Lara rented that apartment in 1985, Miles is well past the Flock of Seagulls, Lost Boys hair-dos. The piercing... ok, those I can deal with but the hair? Com'on.

-Miles mother is apparently dying. At first I'm thinking the loss of hair may be due to chemo but now I'm wondering if it has anything to do with exposure to one Jughead. Hmmm...

-Miles jumps right into the Who am I? What am I? Who's yer daddy? I mean, who's my daddy? Maybe a little "How do you feel? I love you Mom" would be nice for the dying woman. Anyway, looks like Daddy booted them and then died. Miles wants to know where his body is. If Mommy won't tell him why he can talk to dead people, he'll ask dead daddy. "Somewhere you can never go". Jokes on you Ma'.

-Roger's yelling at Juliet and Kate because Little Ben is missing... "You're his doctors! You're supposed to watch him!". Of course he assumes Kate's a doctor too because she's in the motor pool. Who wouldn't.

-How do you spell bounty hunter? Again, com'on! Who can't spell bounty hunter? Now, if he'd asked how to spell Obi-Wan Kenobi, now that'd make sense. I'm guessing that the writers were trying to throw us off and make us think that Hurley was writing about his experiences, since there was a bounty hunter on the plane but even then he could have asked how to spell Jabba the Hutt since Sawyer's used it as a nickname for him.

-So, Alverez had a filling blow right through his head. Ouch.

-Again, Hurley and Miles' banter cracks me up. I could watch a show based around just the two of them. Kind of reminds me of the Odd Couple. They compare their chats with the dead. Miles can just kind of read their final thoughts where Hurley has conversations with their ghosts. Well, conversations and games of checkers.

-Um, they spread some dead kids ashes over the high school football field. There's no way in hell any kids are going to step foot on that field again.

-Miles tells Mr. Gray that speaking with dead people works better when there's a body. We know that he's done it with and without but now we know it works better with the body.

-Since Hurley shared his "I see dead people" story with Miles, Miles apparently feels comfortable enough to share his "that douche is my dad" story with him. See how much we learn when people just open up?

-So Widmore is behind the fake airplane! WOW! That's a huge reveal. I feel like we've been holding on to that one forever.

-How weird and totally cool must it have been for Miles to see his Mom? I wonder if he talked to her? It's been 3 years, you'd think he must have.

-How many effin' Miles' do you know? Do you really think it's just a coincidence that there are two KOREAN ones on this island?

-So it looks like the Swan is being built on Other's territory. I wonder why? Is it because they found the electromagnetic-ness there from the Jughead the Other's buried and think it's some kind of special spot?

-How awesome is it that Hurley saw them put the numbers on the hatch? If it's just the serial number is that where they started?

-Ilana's goon, Bram, kidnaps Miles (and totally ruins his fish taco) and tries to get him to stay away from the island. But the important part is that he (and Ilana) don't work for Widmore. So who the heck do they work for?

-Notice Bram calls him "my friend"? Just like Caesar kept doing when Locke noted that though he calls people "friend" he doesn't mean it. Wonder if Caesar was one of them even though he pretended not to know Ilana on the plane.

-Bram asks Miles the same "shadow" question. Miles doesn't know either but it doesn't warrant him a knock on the head.

-Miles tells Bram he'll go with him for $3.2 million. Funny thing here... Miles also asked for that exact amount from Ben to fake Ben's death when the freighter peeps were after him.

-Looks like Jack has happily given up his leadership role. He passes along the Roger-thinks-Kate-knows-something info and moves on with his life.

-When Sawyer knocked Phil over the head it looked like it did a little somethin' somethin' for Juliet. ;-)

-Speaking of knocking Phil out... was there no other way to work out their issues. Their cover is definitely blown now. No going back.

-When Hurley was recapping the father/son relationship between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader I realized that not only does Luke loses his hand but there is speculation that Chang will eventually lose the use of his left arm based on the lack of movement in a few of the later DHARMA videos. Connection?

-Daddy Chang seems to adore his little Miles. Did Mommy Chang lie? I'm wondering if maybe Miles has something to do with Mommy and baby leaving the island. Did he convince Daddy Chang to give them the boot to save them from the "war" or the purge? How weird would that be?

-Dan's back!! Yeah! He didn't go crazy! I'm so excited to find out where he's been and what he's been doing.

FYI - Our next episode is the 100th Lost episode. I'm betting it's going to be HUGE!

5.12 "Dead is Dead"

The story of Ben and Widmore past is revealed.

-I'm kind of surprised that young Charles doesn't know that Little Ben wouldn't remember what happened to him. Richard knew he wouldn't remember. Maybe it's more Richard's temple than it is "our temple".

-Locke didn't wake Ben last time; Ben woke all on his own.

-The crate. WTH is in it? "just some stuff we need to move" huh? I wonder if Ben really knows. He almost drops it too quick and easily. What do you think it is? It could be guns for the upcoming "war" but it's certainly large enough to be holding a body. Some airlines do put caskets in "air trays" but they're usually wooden; but some can be metal. If it is a body, who's is it? There is some speculation that Locke IS dead and the Locke we've seen is really Smokey. Could they have put Locke's coffin in an air tray to ensure he didn't come back like Christian? The episode is name "dead is dead" afterall, could they be trying to tell us something? Also, when we did see Smokey at the end of this episode, Locke was conveniently absent only to pop in as soon as Smokey was gone. Quite remenicant of Clark Kent appearing just after Superman flew away.

-Love how Ceasar thinks he's the big man on campus. Dork.

-What were they thinking? That's the best they can do at making Ben look 24 years old? A comb-over and Boy Scout uniform? Unbelievable. As wonderful an actor Michael Emerson is... even he can't pull this off.

-Seems they knew nothing about baby Alex huh? Maybe they don't have a thing for children on this island. (Or maybe they do since Widmore didn't dare kill her.) And looks like Ben wasn't always terrible. He didn't kill Danielle when he was told to but then again, he did kidnap her baby.

-And didn't Danielle say that she saw smoke just before Alex was kidnapped? Was it before she went to bed? Was it just the smoke from their camp?

-And what of the whispers Ben warned her of? We need more on that ol' Benny boy.

-I think it's great that Ben didn't bother lying to Locke about why he killed him. "You had critical information that would have died with you" and "Well, I just didn't have time to talk you back into hanging yourself." I'm sure he left stuff out, but he fessed up to everything we already knew.

-I'm happy to see "Island Locke" back. I don't much care for "Mainland Locke".

-I was so expecting the outrigger to outrigger gun battle on the way over to the main island. Bummer. I'm now betting that Ilana and her gang will be the ones to take the last outrigger and will be involved in the shoot out. I'm excited to see which one of them Juliet takes out.

-Inside Ben's house every looks the same, even the game of Risk is still set up just as it was the last time we were "there"; the night Alex died. Meaning this isn't an alternate future.

-As much as they tried to lead up to something big, I wasn't the least bit surprised to see Sun in Ben's house.

-Ben looked surprised to both see the 1977 photo with the Losties in it and to hear Christian's name. Of course, it's hard to tell when he's really surprised isn't it.

-When Ben pulls the plug in Smokey's little mud puddle, the water drains clockwise. Just thought you'd like to know.

-Charles is being escorted off the island. How is this "tricking" him like he told Locke?

-He had a daughter with an outsider huh? Must be Penny. Or so we think, right?

-And he leaves "regularly". Doesn't everyone?

-Funny how Ben tells Sun to go inside because what's coming out of the jungle "he can't control". We assume he's talking about Smokey but instead it's someone else he can't control; Locke.

-Where'd Locke go and why does he now know where to find Smokey?

-Some date confusion here... based on speculation, the purge occured in 1992. This date has yet to be confirmed on the show but Horace mentions to Locke, in his dream, that he'd been dead for 12 years. Since he died in the purge, that would have been 1992. Anyway... Widmore says he's been trying to get back to the island for "almost 20 years". 1992 (or later) to 2007 = 15 years, at most. Is he rounding WAY up or is there more to his quote?

-Ok. So the place where Richard took Little Ben was the "wall" that surrounds "their" temple. Ben knows this now. Does he remember or was he told?

-Ben asks Sun to tell Des that's he sorry. OMG.. for what?!? Hold your breath because we're about to find out...

Ben starts out by shooting Des. Wait, where's the blood? Could he have a bullet proof vest in that grocery bag or is the island just "not done with him"? Next, it's Penny's turn. While trying to convince Ben that she has no relationship with her father, one "Charlie" comes up to deck. We know he's named after our Charlie but as far as Ben knows, he's his Grandpa's namesake. Again, Ben proves himself not to be such a bad guy and doesn't shoot once he sees the child, much like he spared Danielle's life. Then Des' beats his ass to a pulp. Yay!

Anyone else get the feeling that this Charlie is our Charlie? Do Des and Penny bring him to the island so he'll be back in 1977 and grow up to be one Charlie Pace?

-"What lies in the shadow of the statue?" Boy oh boy. We're over the "who's obituary" thing so they need to give us something else huh? There are SO many ways to read into this. We'll start with the obvious, the statue, we'll all assume, is the 4-toed statue. What lies in it's shadow? The Orchid? The temple? The Lefties were standing at the well (later to be the location of the Orchid) when they passed through the statue's time. A little less obvious, maybe the shadow is Smokey. Or maybe it's not a question at all but rather a code. Maybe, whoever Ilana's "with" has a code word and that's what she's looking for from Frank. I did a little research on "shadows" as far as Egyptian mythology goes and this is what I found:

A person's shadow, Sheut (šwt in Egyptian), was always present. It was believed that a person could not exist without a shadow, nor a shadow without a person, therefore, Egyptians surmised that a shadow contained something of the person it represents. For this reason statues of people and deities were sometimes referred to as their shadows.

The shadow was represented graphically as a small human figure painted completely black as well, as a figure of death, or servant of Anubis.

Maybe this is reading into it WAY too much but you never know.

-Where's Sun? Why didn't she climb under the wall with Locke and Ben?

-There are Egyptian hieroglyphs EVERYWHERE in the chamber. I've yet to see any translation of them but if I do, I'll post it on the home page.

-The one above where Smokey comes out appears to be Anubis (the forementioned God in the Shadow description) kneeling down with Smokey. He appears to be either taking something from him or giving something to him. I'm guessing he's taking the souls of those Smokey has judged since Anubis is the God of the Dead.

-Smokey (via Alex skin) warns Ben not to kill Locke, like he's planning. He promises that he won't. Is he lying, yet again? He's seems pretty scared... don't think he's lying.

5.11 "Whatever Happened, Happened"

Kate goes to extremes to save Little Ben's life and we learn what happened to Aaron.

-I must need my eyes checked. Jin seems much closer to Ben's body then he was at the end of "He's Our You" and, wait, didn't Sayid shoot Little Ben on the left side? Why's the bullet hole on the right side now. That's an awfully big mistake on the make-up department's part. Could it be that it's not Little Ben's time to die so the island moved the bullet hole from his heart? Eh, probably not.

-Why didn't Jin say "Man Down! Man Down!" to Phil over the radio? They could have had Juliet prepped and waiting when he got to Dharmaville.

-Ben's alive. It's been a while since I did these, but I'm pretty sure I called that.

-It's funny to see all those DHARMA jumpsuits running around cleaning up after the blazing bus. Just an observation.

-WTH is Jack questioning how Sayid got out? Dumb ass. Even Hurley gives him a "dumb ass" look.

-Kate likes Patsy Cline. We've heard her listening to her before in flashbacks. Did you know Patsy Cline died in a plane crash?

-Why is Kate singing Catch a Falling Star?!?! That's the song Claire asked the potential adoptive parents to sing to Aaron because her father (Christian Shepard) sang it to her as a child. Why would Kate be singing it? Gotta' be a connection.

-Hello Cassidy. Oh Kate! So excited to see you! Sawyer sent me. SLAM!

-Why is Clementine in a crib? Wouldn't she be like 3 years old now?

-WTH is Kate telling her everything? Hurley telling him mom, that I can understand but this? Nope. When Kate met Cassidy she was conning people, not quite the trust-worthy type if you ask me.

-And, holy crap, Cassidy is being a b!tch to Kate. 5 minutes ago she thought the father of her child died in a plane crash, she finds out he didn't and totally takes it out on Kate. I'd take my money and stolen baby and leave.

-Juliet's trying to operate on Little Ben but can't find a uterus in there anywhere. Saywer comes in and she's all "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a doctor". Aw crap, Sawyer *needs* Jack for something.

-If the DHARMA doctor's at the Looking Glass why don't they just go get him?

-Over in house-arrest-but-not-house-arrest Hurley and Miles have the A+ #1 conversation in the history of Lost. The Back to the Future talk. OMG... hilarious! Hurley just said everything every single Lost fan has been asking for weeks now. Miles gives us a bit of understanding to the whole thing. BTW, I'm loving Miles. It's almost like we have 2 Sawyer's now.

-"Then he'll die". Jack's an ass. Hey, isn't that the second time I've called him that today?

-Why does Juliet roll her eyes with everything she says? It's really getting on my nerves.

-Why would Juliet think the Others could do anything to help? They live in tents in the jungle. Maybe it's because Richard is ageless?

-You'd think that a bumpy ride in the back of a VW Van would kill off the kid that was just about dead in a sterile hospital-type environment, wouldn't you? Nope, not his time I guess.

-It's the Marina scene.. again... after Kate leaves with Aaron she stops at the grocery store to get him some milk. They don't have any 24 hour drive-thrus in CA huh? She loses him. My heart was racing through this entire scene... a mother's worst nightmare! She finds him with some creepy blonde who says she was bringing him to someone to make an announcement. I'm not sure I believe her (I don't think Kate does either). She hugs Aaron until he pops. JK.

-Kate pulls up to the pylons. Oops, Juliet forgot to give her the code. Now what? Oh look, there's Sawyer to save the day. What a co-inky-dink.

-I can not believe Kate is still friends with Cassidy. She was such a b!tch to her. *shakes head*

-I don't buy the whole, you lost Sawyer and used Aaron as a replacement crap. That's dumb.

-Awww... Sawyer's doing this for Juliet. His subtle way of saying no more Skater.

-The entire Jack/Juliet bathroom scene was dumb. Nothing more came of it then Juliet seeing Jack nekkid and keeping up their side of this stupid love-square thingy. Dumb.

-Why's Carole so b!tchy to Kate when she answers the door? She has no reason to be... yet.

-So, Kate loses Aaron in the supermarket and freaks out about it. Then she leaves him alone in a hotel room while she goes to visit Carole. *Then* she just leaves without even introducing him to his Grandmother. I can see why she's giving up on this whole mother thing. She sucks.

-Kate's going back to find Claire. I think I called that too.

-Kate actually got to me in her goodbye scene. Applause to Evangeline.

-Where the heck is Carole? Any self respecting grandmother would have been sitting right outside that door, pushing her way through to see her grandchild.

-Ooo... no-name Other mentioned Ellie and Charles! Cool! But Richard doesn't care about them. Even cooler!

-So let me get this straight. Had Jack operated on Little Ben he wouldn't be the monster he is today. Because he refused, Little Ben became "one of" them. Very interesting.

-Big Ben awakes from his oar-induced coma to see a very much alive Locke sitting by his bedside. "Welcome to the land of the living."

5.10 "He's Our You"

Sayid believes he's found his purpose for returning to the island.

I'm just going to do my thoughts again this week. Planning a birthday party and Easter dinner for the family while taking care of the 2 little ones and trying to work from home has pretty much eaten up all of my recap time. LOL

Anyway, if you haven't seen the episode, please go to abc.com and watch it before reading my thoughts, as they DEFINITELY contain spoilers!!

-Funny how little Ben brings Sayid a chicken salad sandwich right after the scene of little Sayid killing a chicken.

-The book that little Ben give Sayid is called "A Separate Reality".
Per Amazon.com:

Product Description
In this book, Castaneda resumes his apprenticeship, determined to go deeper still into don Juan's world, to learn to see beyond the surface realities of life. He continues his dialogue with don Juan, intuitive, wise, demanding, and fierce in his struggle to see and know beyond the vision of ordinary men; and himself, a man of courage and intelligence who submits himself to don Juan's teaching, to enter into another world as a participant rather than an observer. A Separate Reality is a work that is at once the discovery of a hitherto unrecorded body of wisdom and knowledge and the story of a remarkable and shattering personal experience.

About the Author
Born in 1925 in Peru, anthropologist Carlos Castaneda wrote a total of 15 books, which sold 8 million copies worldwide and were published in 17 different languages. In his writing, Castaneda describes the teaching of Don Juan, a Yaqui sorcerer and shaman. His works helped define the 1960's and usher in the New Age movement. Even after his mysterious death in California in1998, his books continue to inspire and influence his many devoted fans.

-Sayid wasn't handcuffed at all but rather zip-tied. Did they have zip-ties in the 70s? Horace didn't seem to question it when he cut them off. Speaking of that... I think their intention was for us to think Horace was coming to torture Sayid; never got that impression though.

-As Juliet watches from her window, Jack and Kate both exit Kate's house together. Are they together again?

-You can't help but feel sorry for little Ben when Daddy Roger slaps him around. Even Sayid jumped to his feet and we know how Sayid feels about him.

-There's a Geronimo Jackson poster on the wall of the "mess hall".

-Notice Hurley's DHARMA symbol? It's a chef toque (hat) with a fork and knife criss-crossed beneath is. Kind of like a pirate's Jolly Roger. Odd.

-Hurley's oh-so-gentle way of spilling the beans on Sawyer and Juliet was hilarious. Funny how Jack and Kate spent all that time together last night and he never mentioned it to her huh?

-"I'm Larry. This is my brother Darryl; this is my other brother Darryl" Oldham was a creepy guy but I couldn't get that vision out of my head.

-When they replay the marina scene Sayid tells Ben "If I see you again, it will be extremely unpleasant for us both". In the original scene, in "This Place is Death" goes like this.. "And if I see you, or him (Jack) again, it will be extremely unpleasant for all of us." Why did they change this? Is it important (is that a "Separate Reality"?) or was it just to focus on the Ben/Sayid relationship? Or maybe it's just Sayid's trippy memory.

-The scotch that Sayid is drinking, MacCutcheon, is the very same scotch that a)Widmore told Des he wasn't worthy of b)Anthony Cooper was drinking when he pushed Locke out of the window and c)Charlie found in Saywer's island stash and planned to use to get Des drunk on.

-Have we ever seen Sayid laugh before? Or smile for that matter? His whole "trip" just about had Sawyer ready to explode. Luckily, no one believed him.

-Why does Oldham live in a tipi? He is pretty creepy, maybe they don't want him in the barracks. Or maybe he doesn't live here... just tortures here.

-Juliet's totally "keeping her enemies closer" because Kate doesn't know one single thing about working on veedubs. Looks like she should have gotten Jack's job.

-Ok, Amy's creepy. You think she's all sweet and lovey-dovey but nope. She seemed to share an interesting look with Saywer. Does she know more about him then we think? If so, wouldn't she be siding with him?

-And speaking of sides, I was SHOCKED when Saywer made the vote unanimous. That was definitely LaFleur talking, not Saywer. If it were our Saywer the convo would have gone like this:

Horace: I would really like to say it's unanimous.
Saywer: Well, it aint Chief.

-No way in hell Ilana would have gotten the drop on Sayid if it weren't for that $120 a glass scotch he was downing. And I'm sure she used that to her advantage.

-She must be more then just a bounty hunter. I don't think they have IDs that let them get through airport security with a gun.

-And who hired her. She says it wasn't Ben. Then again, she also said she wasn't a professional. But Ben looked pretty surprised to see Sayid on the plane so I'm not sure it was him. Then again, he's, well, Ben, king of the liars.

-When Saywer goes to Kate's she sort of sneaks out of the house like she doesn't want Sawyer to see who's inside. Who could it be? Or maybe it's the other way around, she doesn't want the person inside to see Sawyer.

-Kate starts to tell Saywer why she's come back before the veedub comes flying through. I think they want us to think it's for him, but I think it has something to do with Aaron. Maybe she's been sent back to find Claire since we all know Aaron's not supposed to be "raised by another".

-Pretty good chance that little Ben set the veedub ablaze. Any arguments there?

-With security distracted, Harry Potter enters Sayid's cell in his cloak of invisibility. Oh wait, that's little Ben. My mistake.

-And then, the end. Holy crap did he just do that? :-O

-Is he dead? I'm guessing no. Why? Because if you look back at the way big Ben has treated Sayid all along it kind of says "this is payback for shooting me when I was 12".

5.09 "Namaste"

The 03 join the DI. We find out where Sayid and Sun are. Frank and the "woman" take the outrigger to the main island at Ben's suggestion.

Time is slim right now so I'm going the lazy route and just posting my thoughts rather than an entire recap. Better than nothing right? If you haven't seen the episode yet, I'd suggest going to abc.com and watching it before reading my "thoughts" as they DEFINITELY contain spoilers.

-After the first flash when 316 is going down we suddenly switch from night to day. Has the plane traveled through time? Are they NOT in the present day as we initially thought? Also, once in the daylight, the "numbers" can be heard over the radio. Need I remind you that Danielle turned this recording off in order to place her SOS call back in 1988. Could they be before 1988? I don't think that's the case though because each time we switch from the 316 scenes to the DI scenes the title cards read "Thirty Years Ealier" putting the 316ers in 2007. Why did we hear the numbers? Could they have been re-recorded? By Hurely maybe? They are "his" numbers.

-Notice the runway. Where could that have come from? *wink* Looks like those Others knew A LOT about what was going to happen in the future huh? Or at least one of them, ahem-Ben.

-So, Sun's on the plane. Why didn't she flash with the other Losties? Really, I'm asking. Why?

-Sawyer test drives the old nicknames by calling Hurley "Kong" but after finding that it just didn't ride so smooth, he calls him Hugo. He sicks with "Doc" for Jack but doesn't even try one on Kate; he actually calls her Kate. I don't think he's ever done that. Could the love be gone? She then calls him James. WTH? Is this the Twilight Zone or sumpthin'?

-It's 1977. "Ooh..uh, what?" - Hurley. Awesome.

-Little bummed that we missed out on how exactly Sawyer explained to the O6 about how they got to 1977. When we come back from the commercial, Jack's just getting the facts straight. Why is he all of a sudden so easy to convince?

-Love that Hurley points out Jin's fabulous English.

-"The *hostiles*?" Why is Kate such a b*tch. She knows exactly who Saywer's talking about.

-"Who else was on the plane?" "Sayid, Lapidus and (I baked a cake during Jack's pause here)... Suuuuuuuunnnnnn" (picture Jack moving in slo-mo as he said that).

-Radzinsky at the Flame. Background... Radzinsky not only designed the Swan (aka "The Hatch") as we learned in this episode, but he was also Kelvin's first partner. Kelvin eventually became Des' partner in the hatch. You may (or may not, it was a LONG time ago) remember Kelvin telling Des that Radzinsky shot himself, leaving the stain on the ceiling of the hatch. He's also the one that drew the map that Locke saw on the back of the blast door.

-When Juliet mentions the sub that's coming in that afternoon, I thought she was saying that they should put the O3 on it and ship their asses out! Anyone else?

-Sawyer asks Juliet if she's seen his sweatshirt with the bulldog on it, which he later gives to Hurley. This is a shout-out to Josh Holloway's alma marter the University of Georgia.

-One of the extras on the beach during Lapidus' "live together, die alone" speech is Jorge Garcia's (Hurley's) real-life girlfriend.

-Amy's baby is Ethan huh? Cool, but not that cool; could have been better. Ethan was DHARMA. Did he turn "Hostile" with Ben? Obviously he survived the purge and is now on Ben's side...or at least he was before Charlie offed him.

-Why couldn't Jin or Sawyer at least shoot Sayid a wink or something to let him know that everything was cool? A couple times there, I wasn't so sure.

-Hurley reminds Sawyer that the DI got wiped out by the purge. Reminds him? When did he even learn that? I thought Locke and Hurley were the only ones made privy to that information when they came across the "pit".

-Sawyer says that Faraday told them there's "rules" about what they can and can't do here. One is, apparently, no telling about the purge. Another, I'm guessing, is no offing a certainly pre-teen. *wink*

-Where's Faraday? I was wondering that last week but forgot to mention it. Sawyer says he's not here... anymore. Does that mean he's physically not there or mentally not there? Based on the last state we saw Faraday in, he easily could have lost it. Or he could have taken the sub back to the mainland to continue his research. He did have a caretaker when we first met him crying at the television showing 815 at the bottom of the ocean. Maybe it's both, maybe he's crazy and home. Oh, so many thoughts... overloading... a)Could that Daniel be our Daniel? Meaning, have they stopped aging like Richard? b)Is he crying because he didn't change anything? We saw him in the Orchid at the beginning of this season; did his presence there have something to do with why he's not here.. anymore? Of course, he could just be dead, but I hope not. Weird as he is, I like Faraday.

-What's up with Miles? Why is Mr. Sees Dead People playing Barney to Sawyer's Andy? They better be building up to something here.

-Back in '07 when Ben explains to Sun about the outriggers, he ditches his sling. Was he faking his injury or has the island decided he's worth healing now?

-When did Lapidus and Ben meet? He landed the chopper, took Sayid and Des to the freighter, took the Mercs back to the island, was handcuffed to the chopper, resuced by Sawyer and Sayid, then flew the group out. When the Mercs got Ben they walked him toward chopper but never introduced Lapidus and Ben before Kate's daring rescue of Ben. Yet, Ben says "Hi Frank" to him like they've met, all whilst Frank tries to avoid eye contact. Ooo... there's something here we don't know yet. Does Ben have something to do with Lapidus not piloting 815?

-Ilana told Locke that the pilot and "some woman" took one of the outriggers. There's only 1 of 2 ways she'd know that. 1) Someone saw them. Meaning they probably saw her clock Ben. Or 2) Ben told them. Did he regain conciousness long enough to walk back to the beach and then ended up with the injured?

-Hee hee. Jack's a janitor. Sawyer...you dawg. *shakes head, smiling*

-Hee hee. Kate squirms. Juliet... you dawgett. They're more alike then we give them credit for.

-Looks like Kate's in a navy jumpsuit like Juliet's. Keep your enemies closer, I guess.

-On the main island, Sun and Lapidus see something in the trees. My thoughts? Smokey who turns himself into...

-...Christian. He's in a dilapidated building that makes me wonder... did the O3, err sorry, forgot about Sayid, did the O4 change the future? If the Others lived here they certainly would have cleaned up all the DI crap. Signs falling down, old photos on the walls, broken windows, papers everywhere... it's a dump. Not at all the the Barracks I remember.

-Speaking of the photos. Christian takes one down and shows Sun and Lapidus the O3 in the photo from 1977. Did you notice the woman sitting behind Sun? She's hard to see in this screencap that I found...

I'm thinking it's maybe Claire. She's the only woman we've seen with Christian. She looks like she could be a red-head though, maybe it's Charlotte.

-There was a photo dated 1978 hanging on the wall so we know that our Losties have at least 1 year to stop the purge or save their butts.

-After Sawyer lays down the law with a relieved-to-be-relieved-of-duty Jack and sees Kate on her porch I got to wondering, "why's she acting all weird?" then I remembered... someone did something with Aaron to make her come here. Her mission obviously has something to do with Sawyer... and it's not good.

-Young Harry Potter, err sorry, Ben Linus brings Sayid a sandwich. All I could think was "when did Sayid first meet grown up Ben?" I'm pretty sure it was when Sayid tortured "Henry Gale" in the hatch. Ben knew Sayid at this point. I'm totally going to have to go back and rewatch that episode to see if Ben says anything that might hint that he knows him.

-No one ever told Sayid that he's in 1977. I'm sure he's been nothing but confused since he woke on the island but meeting a little boy named Ben... I don't think he's going to sleep real well tonight.

5.08 "LeFleur"

The Losties find themselves in the 70s and join the DI. Sawyer reunites with the O3.

We’re back with Sawyer holding the rope that Locke was climbing down. Miles tells him he can let go, Sawyer looks down to see the rope buried in the ground and the well gone. He starts digging and Juliet tells him to give it up. Could this rope sticking from the ground be what encouraged someone to dig there to begin with? If I stumbled along a buried rope, I might be interested to see where it leads. Miles sees something behind them that may tell them “when” they are. They turn to see a huge statue facing away from them. I believe it’s pretty safe to assume we’re seeing the rest of our 4-toed statue! Finally! I did some research on what it is based on this angle and believe this statue may be Taweret.

Note the 4 toes!! According to Wikipedia, Taweret was the Egyptian deity of protection in pregnancy and childbirth. Could it be that babies can no longer be born on the island because the statue has been destroyed? Taweret was often shown with one arm resting on the sa symbol, which symbolized protection and on occasion she carried an ankh, the symbol of life. This is an ankh:

Look familiar? It’s Paul’s necklace. Could possessing the necklace during her pregnancy be the reason why she carried to full term? Were she and Paul trying to conceive on their little picnic and that’s why he was wearing it?

While the Losties stare at the statue, Locke is below talking with Christian and turns the FDW. This causes another, more massive flash. As Locke vanishes, the Losties grab their heads in pain. After the flash Miles notes that this one felt more like an earthquake. Sawyer opens his eyes to see that the well has returned and without an instant of hesitation, jumps in. I didn’t notice the ruins around it before. Going nowhere, he notices that the well has been filled in. We do not see whether the Orchid is behind them or not. Juliet notes that her headache is gone, as does Miles. He also mentions that his nose is no longer bleeding. At this, Jin checks his nose. When was his bleeding? Or was he just checking to make sure it hadn’t started? Believing Locke accomplished his mission, Sawyer says that now they just wait for him to come back; as long as it takes.

Three years later – 1977

In a DHARMA station, Jerry and his Geronimo Jackson t-shirt wearing gal pal, Rosie, jam out to some Tony Orlando and Dawn. Phil returns, after a 10 minute hiatus, to their hootenanny (LOL). Jerry tells him to stop bringing them down and enjoy some of Rosie’s brownies, man. Phil worries that LaFleur will find out. Rosie glances at the one of the screens they’re supposed to be monitoring. She gets the guys attention. They see Horace Goodspeed lighting a stick of dynamite. He drunkenly staggers towards a tree and tosses the stick. The tree explodes. Jerry quickly pushes Rosie out and Phil tells Jerry that they have to tell LaFleur. Terrified by this thought, Jerry says there’s no way he’s waking him at 3am. What if Horace blows himself up asks Phil. There’s another explosion and they run for the door.

Outside a house Phil and Jerry argue about who’s going to knock. Phil does. A man from behind the door asks “what?” Phil says that they have a situation at the pylons. The man opens the door, we see him only from behind. He asks what kind of situation. They tell him about Horace and he swears as he grabs his jumpsuit. When he turns we see that LaFleur is really a clean, shaven Sawyer. His jumpsuit says LaFleur – Head of Security. Obviously the first question that comes to mind is, why’s Sawyer going by the name LaFleur? Then, how the heck did he become head of DHARMA security? But MY question is: why does his jumpsuit have his last name on it when everyone else’s has their first?

Sawyer pulls up outside another house where he honks the horn. Miles exits, also wearing a DHARMA jumpsuit. He hops in, calling Sawyer “Boss”, to which he replies “Evening, Enos” (homage to Dukes of Hazzard there). Miles asks where they’re headed, Sawyer tells him that they’re “fearless leader” is drunk and blowing up trees. Miles notes that Horace doesn’t drink. Sawyer says that’s all the more reason they need to keep this on the “down low”. They drive off in the iconic blue veedub.

They reach the pylons and find Horace passed out snoring. A patch of grass behind him burns. Sawyer scoops him up to take him home and tell “Amy” what’s been going on. He tells Miles to put out the fire and pack up the dynamite.

At Horace’s house, Sawyer knocks on the door; Horace is slung over his shoulder. A very pregnant Amy opens the door and asks if he’s ok. Sawyer puts him on the couch and asks what happened. Amy, referring to Sawyer as “Jim”, tells him that they had an argument about Paul. Just then she doubles over in pain. The baby’s coming she tells him.

Three years earlier – 1974

Daniel is sitting on the ground mumbling “I won’t do it” over and over again. I'm guessing he's referring to telling little Charlotte not to return to the island. Juliet and Sawyer approach him. Juliet asks where Charlotte is and Dan tells her that she didn’t leap during the last flash because she’s dead. The way he worded it confuses me though, “She moved on and we stayed”. Sawyer also questions it. Could she have actually come with him during the last flash but then disappeared afterwards? Why would her body keep leaping if she’d died? Dan tells them that they’re not leaping anymore, that it’s over. Wherever, whenever they are now is where they’ll be for good. Juliet offers her condolences about Charlotte. Dan starts to mumble how he “won’t do it” again. Sawyer tells the group that he thinks they should go back to the beach again. If the camp is there good, if not, they’ll rebuild it. He knows that when the O6 and Locke get back that the beach is where they’ll go to find them. Miles thinks they should avoid the spot where flaming arrows where shot at them but Juliet sides with Sawyer and they start for the beach. Miles kicks the sand and pouts because Sawyer’s in charge.

While heading through the jungle, Sawyer thanks Juliet for having his back but she says she thinks going to the beach is dumb too and suggest Sawyer think of a better idea before they get there. Just then they hear gun shots. They raise their rifles and walk towards a woman’s screams. In a clearing they see a woman being held at gun point by two Hostiles. There’s a man, apparently dead, lying on the ground. The woman begs for her life and pleas for help for the man, Paul. One of the Hostile’s picks a gun up off the ground, presumably Paul’s, and tucks it in the back of his pants. The Hostile’s then place a sack, similar to the kinds used on Sawyer, Kate and Jack on the docks, over the woman’s head. She falls to her knees. The woman pleas with the men telling them they meant no harm and that they were just “touring this park”. There appears to be a picnic set up on the ground. Miles confirms with Dan that they shouldn’t get involved, Dan says it doesn’t matter “whatever happened, happened”. Sawyer asks Juliet if she’s got his back, to which she says “Absolutely” and he steps out of the bushes. The Hostiles order the woman to her feet and pull her up as Sawyer orders them to drop their guns. Immediately one of the men fires his gun at Sawyer but Juliet drops him like a sack of potatoes. Sawyer looks down at his chest, thinking he was shot, then looks to Juliet to see her lowering her rifle.. Was he shot? Was it just “not his time” to die? Or did the Hostile just have really bad aim? As the second Hostile lifts his rifle, Sawyer shoots him. The woman, still blind to the commotion, sobs. Juliet and Sawyer take the guns from the men and Sawyer removes the bag from the woman’s head to reveal that it’s Amy (the pregnant woman from the future). She asks Sawyer “who are you?” He and Juliet just share a look. Why are the Hostiles attacking Amy and Paul? I’m guessing that part of their truce includes “you stay on your side, we’ll stay on ours”. Do the pylons mark this territory? We’re Amy and Paul trespassing? What were they doing with Amy? Did they plan to take her back to Richard? Did they kill Paul in self-defense? He did have a gun after all.

As they clean up the scene, Amy sits beside Paul crying. He’s wearing a DHARMA security jumpsuit like the ones Miles and Sawyer will be wearing in the future. Juliet notes the suit to Sawyer and tells him that that means they’re in the 70s-80s. Jin finds a walkie on one of the Hostiles and tosses it to Sawyer. He turns it on to hear only static. Juliet tells him that they have to go. Sawyer stoops down and tells Amy that the Hostiles may have called someone before they showed up so they need to leave. She asks who they are and Sawyer tells him they’re from a shipwreck but it doesn’t matter right now. She says “the truce” under her breath and tells them that they need to bury the bodies and bring Paul, her husband, back with them. She sobs and she begs. Jin says that he’ll carry Paul. Sawyer agrees and says they need to do it fast.

They carry Paul’s body through the jungle. Sawyer tells the Losties to let him do all the talking when they arrive at the DHARMA barracks. When Miles questions is ability to dupe them Sawyer tells him that he used to lie for a living. Just then Juliet yells at Daniel to stop walking. He freezes in his steps. He looks up to see the concrete pylons. Juliet tells Amy to turn them off. Amy plays dumb. Juliet does too and says that it looks like some sort of sonic fence. She knows what they are, remember she deactivated the fence when she and Kate were running from Smokey in “Left Behind”. She must be lying for Amy’s benefit since she thinks they just crashed on the island. Sawyer reminds Amy that they just saved her so a little trust would be appreciated. She reluctantly walks over to the control box and fiddles with it a bit. While she does this Juliet tells Sawyer that Dan would have fried his brain had he taken just one more step. Amie tells them it’s off. Sawyer makes her walk through first to prove it. She goes through, there's a hum but she isn't harmed. They follow. Suddenly they’re struck by high-pitched buzzing and drop to the ground motionless. Amy removes a pair of ear plugs. You’d think Juliet wouldn’t have fallen for this, but she did. Obviously Amy just intended to “stun” them because these pylons can be deadly, remember what they did to Patchy?

Three years earlier – 1974

Amy’s in labor. The doctor tells Sawyer that the baby is breech and will have to be delivered by c-section. He says that the babies are usually born on the mainland, as he’s just an internist, not obstetrician. Amy was meant to leave the island for the mainland Tuesday but the baby is coming 2 weeks early. Sawyer asks if he’ll be able to deliver it and he says he doesn’t know. Sawyer rushes out.

Sawyer approaches a garage. He asks the man outside where “she” is. He points over to a van. Juliet pops out from underneath. She’s in a dark jumpsuit with a wrench DHARMA logo on it. She used her real name, it says “Juliet” on it. She’s a grease monkey? *shrug* She asks him what’s up and he tells her that Amy’s in labor. She smiles briefly until she realizes what he means exactly. He tells her that she needs a caesarean. Juliet whispers to him that they had an agreement. Agreement? Why would she want to climb under vans rather than practice medicine? Sawyer says to screw the agreement because Amy needs help. Juliet tells him that every time she’s tried to help a woman give birth on the island, it hasn’t worked. Sawyer notes that maybe whatever caused that hasn’t happened yet and begs her to try.

Back in the medical office Juliet examines Amy. She asks the doctor if he tried turning the baby but he doesn’t even know the terminology she uses. She says that it’s probably too late now. She lists off the tools she’ll need but the doctor is hesitant to get the grease monkey a scalpel. Understandable. The doctor asks where Horace is but Sawyer says he’s speaking for Horace and Juliet’s doing the surgery. The doctor protests more but Amy says she wants Juliet to do it. Sawyer says a few supportive words to Juliet and leaves.

Pacing outside, Sawyer is approached by Jin who now speaks FLUENT English! His jumper also has his real name on it. He asks if everything’s ok and he brings him up to speed. Sawyer asks Jin if he’s had any “luck”. He tells him that he’s finished with gird 1-3-3 with no sign of “our people”. Oh, he’s searching the island grid by grid? That’s kind of odd. Does he think they’re just going to stand still until he finds them? *shrug* Jin asks how long they’re going to keep looking, Sawyer tells him again “as long as it takes”. Just then Juliet comes out, her face is flushed. Sawyer asks what happened. She tells him that it’s a boy and both mother and child are fine. Sawyer smiles from ear to ear as Juliet cries. I felt the urge for a hug here.

Three years earlier – 1974

Sawyer wakes on a couch. He rubs his eyes and sits up to see Horace before him. Horace asks him how his head feels. Sawyer says “it hurts”. He asks where the others are; Horace says they’re fine. He tells him that Amy filled him in on what happened in the jungle and thanks him. Sawyer notes that they have a funny way of showing their gratitude. Horace tells him that they have protocols. He tells him of the Hostiles and asks who, exactly, he is. Sawyer introduces himself as James “Jim” LaFleur (LaFleur means “flower” in French). Horace says that his friends told him that “Jim” is the captain and any questions should go to him. His first: how’d you get here? Sawyer tells him that his salvage ship departed from Tahiti looking for the Black Rock when they hit a reef and shipwrecked and he and his friends were searching the island for the rest of their people. Horace tells him he’s never heard of the Black Rock but buys his story. He tells him that they will be shipped out on the sub leaving in the morning. Sawyer asks if they can have a couple weeks to look for their people. After all, they did save Amy’s life. Horace tells him no. Only DHARMA members are allowed to live on the compound and they’re not DHARMA material. They obviously don’t think the island is special if they’re willing to let people come and go as they please.

Outside Juliet, Jin, Miles and Dan are sitting at a table. Juliet looks around since this is where she once live (in the future LOL). Miles is worried that they won’t believe Sawyer’s story but Juliet trusts they they’ll be fine. You can't help but wonder what she knows. She was an Other. Does she know that they'll all be joining? Could she have seen photos of them or heard stories in her 3 years as an Other? Miles asks what she’s looking at and she points out the house she used to live in. Miles asks if she was DHARMA but she tells him that the Others took over the barracks when most of the DI were wiped out. Most? I thought that Ben was the only DI survivor. Jin turns to Dan and asks if the flashes are done. Dan tells him that they’re done. Just then a woman with a British accent walks by with a small 3 or 4 year old red-haired girl. The girl appears to wave to Daniel. He whispers Charlotte’s name. I’m not sure a) if this little girl was there or just a figment of crazy-Dan’s imagination b) was Charlotte. According to Ben, Charlotte was born in 1979. If that’s the case a) this isn’t Charlotte or b) Ben’s info was wrong.

Horace approaches the table and tells them that someone would be with them shortly to show them their rooms and that LaFleur would fill them in on what’s next. He walks away and Miles asks “Mr. LaFleur?” Sawyer says he just improvised and that it’s a common Creole surname. Why wouldn’t he use his real name? Must just be second nature to lie. Or maybe he’s not lying. Could Ford just be another con name? He tells the group that Horace bought the lie but he’s making them leave in the morning. Miles doesn’t see a down side to this. Just them an alarm sounds and everyone begins to panic. They tell the Losties to get inside and they run for one of the houses. Phil has a woman in the house, Heather, “keep an eye on them”. Is her rifle for them or for the Hostiles? Sawyer and Juliet look out the window to see what the commotion’s about. We see a well dressed man coming from the jungle, carrying a torch. He sticks it into the ground and walks towards the houses. It’s ever ageless, Richard Alpert. Sawyer and Juliet share a look. “Uh oh” Sawyer says.

Horace goes out and greets Richard. He tells him he would have turn off the fence had he known he was coming. Richard tells him that the fence “may keep other things out but not us.” Are the Hostiles immune to the sonic fence or do they just have other ways to get around it? Maybe under it? He tells Horace that he’s upset that they’ve broken their truce. Horace tells him that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Richard knows he’s lying and asks where his two men are. From inside, Miles watches them argue. He can’t hear them but their body language tells the story. He tells the others that getting on the sub is sounding better and better every minute. Sawyer says that no one is getting on the sub. Just then Horace and Phil burst through the door. Horace asks Sawyer how well he buried the Hostiles bodies and he tells him that it depends on how hard they look for them. This does not comfort Horace who tells Phil to call the Arrow and tell them they’re at “Condition One” and to put the fence at maximum power. Why? Richard just told you that the fence doesn’t affect them. Or could he be worried that Richard’s going to sick Smokey after them? We know Smokey can't penetrate the sonic fence. Sawyer asks Horace to let him speak with his “buddy out there with the eyeliner”. This is a big joke on the internet among Lost fans. The actor that portrays Richard, Nestor Carbonell, has a very dark eye line and lashes making it look like he’s wearing eyeliner, but he isn’t. Horace doesn’t think this is a good idea but Sawyer explains that he was the one to kill the Hostiles and he wants to tell Richard why. Horace still says no but Sawyer goes anyway.

Sawyer approaches Richards and says hello. Richard asks if he knows him since Sawyer called him by name. Sawyer tells him that he’s the person that killed his men. He tells him what happened. He actually tells him the truth. Sawyer the con man tells the truth. Richard asks if “his people” know he’s telling him this. Sawyer tells him that they aren’t his people and that their truce shouldn’t be affected by what he did. Richard asks who he is, if not DHARMA. Sawyer sits down and again, tells the truth. He asks him if they buried the Jughead bomb. Richard begins to ask how he knows about that and Sawyer tells him that he also knows about Locke’s visit back in 1954 and that he’s waiting for him to return. Richard is intrigued by Sawyer’s story but says he still needs justice for the two men he killed.

Sawyer and Horace go to Amy who’s sitting with Paul’s body. Horace tells her that they’ve told Richard where the bodies were buried in order to maintain their truce. He also needs Paul’s body. Amy cringes and says no. Horace speaks to her as an old friend and tells her that it’s entirely her choice and they’ll willingly suffer the consequences should she say no. She looks at Paul and tells Horace that they can take him. That Paul would have wanted to keep them safe. She asks for a minute alone with him and takes an ankh necklace off the body. As she leaves Sawyer apologizes to her and asks Horace if he needs help with the body. He says no and tells him that he and the other Losties are free to stay until the sub returns in 2 weeks.

Sawyer goes out to the docks and tells Juliet that they’ve been giving 2 more weeks. She tells him that she’s leaving on the sub in the morning. She points out that Locke saved them. They flashes have stopped. There’s no reason to believe that he might be coming back. She tells him that she’s been trying to get off the island for the last 3 years and this is her chance. Sawyer points out that it’s 1977 and whatever she thinks she’s going back to won’t be there. He also asks who’s going to watch his back if she goes. She smiles at his sincerity and agrees to give him 2 more weeks. Sawyer nods to himself at his accomplishment.

Three years later – 1977

Sawyer’s returning home and stops to pick a flower. He smells it and smiles. This is a whole new Sawyer. He gets home and comments on how something smells good. In the kitchen Juliet makes dinner. This house looks very similar to the one she’ll have again in the future. The tile is a different color and the stove and fridge are switched but those are regular cosmetic things that could have changed over the last 20 years. Could it be the same one? Top: LaFleur Bottom: Tale of Two Cities

Sawyer shows her the flower and she asks if it’s for her. He walks towards her and tells her what an amazing job she did today and she hugs him and thanks him for believing in her. They kiss and she tells him that she loves him. He returns the sentiment. I’m surprised to say that I think they’re sweet together. I believe my exact feelings about the possible hook up between Sawyer and Juliet back on the season premiere was “ewww”. I take it back. I think it’s because they’ve actually had 3 years to develop a relationship and it’s not just a one-night-stand.

Sawyer sits in a chair reading while Horace sleeps on the couch beside him. He wakes and Sawyer asks him how his head feels. This scene is reminiscent of the first time these two met. Horace tells him “it hurts”. He tells him that Amy had the baby and it’s a boy. Could this baby be someone of importance? It seems that it’s the first DHARMA baby to be born on the island since the mothers-to-be are usually sent to the mainland to give birth. Could it be Demsmond? That would explain why he's "special". Or maybe they'll name it after the man that made their relationship and the baby's birth possible: James LaFleur, later known in life as James Ford. ?? I believe that both Des and Sawyer are too old to be this child, but who konws. Horace is angry with himself for missing it. Personally I’m a bit surprised he’s not rushing out the door to see him. Sawyer asks why he was too drunk to be there. He tells him that he found Paul’s necklace in her dresser drawer. He’s afraid that, after 3 years, Amy still isn’t over him. Sawyer explains how he loved someone but has moved on and can hardly remember what she looked like so, yes, 3 years is enough time to get over someone.

The next morning Sawyer and Juliet are sleeping when the phone rings. Sawyer answers it. It’s Jin telling him about the O3. He tells him not to bring them to the barracks, instead to meet him in the North Valley. He hangs up and rushes to the closet. Juliet asks who it was. He tells her it was Jin and that he has to go. Why wouldn’t he tell her? Is it because he does still have feelings for Kate? Or maybe he just wants to see if he still has feelings. Or possibly he's afraid she may still have feelings for Jack. He arrives at the valley in a blue jeep. It may not be the veedub van but it’s the exact same color. He steps out and stands in front of the jeep. Jin pulls up in the van about 100 miles away. Hurley gets out and stands to one side of the van. I'm AMAZED that Hurley didn't charge forward and bear hug Sawyer instantly. Jack stands on the other, HUGE smile on his face. Then Sawyer removes his glasses to see Kate get out and stand in the middle. She smiles at him, he stares, pretty much expressionless.

LOST

Ok, few things. It’s pretty safe to assume that Sawyer, Juliet, Jin and Miles were members of the DI from the beginning. I’m guessing that Jack, Kate and Hurley will now join as well. Could this be why Ben wanted lists back in the beginning? He wanted to see if "they" were back? Also, speaking of Ben, he should be on the island right now. From what we’ve learned about Ben, he was born in the early 60s. He came to island when he was 10-12 years old which should land sometime during the Losties 1974-1977 visit. Is he there with them? Do they know it? Could Sawyer’s intervention in Amy’s situation have changed something? If you remember, Ben was born prematurely while his parents were on a hike. His father carried him and his mother to the roadside and Horace and his companion, Olivia, pulled over to help them. Who was Olivia? Wife? Sister? Where is she now? We know that she’ll be Ben’s teacher when she reaches the island so she should be there now. Unless, again, Sawyer saving Amy changed that. Of course, Dan says “what happened happened” so this is probably the way it went down the first time around. It is however, safe to assume that child-Ben will meet Juliet. If you remember Harper, the psychiatrist for DHARMA, told Juliet when she first arrived that Ben was so nice to her because she looks “just like her”. When Juliet asks who, Harper changed the subject. Will Juliet befriended a young Ben?

Locke told Jack that "bad things happened" when he left the island. The only way to stop them was to go back, according to Richard and Christian. But they stopped when Locke left, not when the O6 (err, O3) returned. Could Richard and Christian have another reason for getting the O6 (err, 3) back to the island?

Where are Rose and Bernard? Could they be the skeletons Kate and Jack found in the caves? Jack dated them back to 1954-64 based on clothing degradation. Could they have died during the jump back to 1954? That was the last time we saw them. The flaming arrows were flying towards the beach, they all split up and we haven’t seen them since. The skeletons, named Adam and Eve by Locke, were holding 1 white and 1 black stone; another clue that they could be Rose and Bernard. Jack took these stones off the bodies and kept them. Is it possible he will later put them back when the bodies are found?

5.07 "The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham"

Locke's mission off the island, as Jeremy Bentham, is revealed.

I found this episode mediocre. The beginning and end were interesting; learning of the fate of 316 and how Bentham died, but the middle seemed like filler. We saw small bits of his meeting with the O6, which I thought were disappointing. I'd hoped for a bit more out if his meetings. No one seemed the least bit surprised to see him, besides Hurley. It was so hard for them to get off of the island, yet John did it and not one of them asked him how. It is ironic how, when on the mainland, Locke is back in a wheelchair and a bit of a failure. I believe he truly is meant to be on the island.

Caesar, the 316 passenger that I said we'd be seeing again, enters an office and begins ruffling through papers. First thought, this is a flashback and we'll now learn what led Caesar to flight 316 in the first place. There's a old Life Magazine on the desk dated April 19, 1954. The cover story is about Hydrogen Bomb testing. Suddenly, we recognize the symbol on one of the folders as a DHARMA symbol. The Hydra to be exact. The Hydra is the "other" island. The one where Kate and Sawyer were held captive in bear cages and where Jack was confined in an empty shark tank. Inside we see notes from Daniel's notebook, though they're aged much more then the last time we saw Daniel rifle through them. While going through the folder, on the floor, Caesar notices a loaded rifle hidden beneath the office desk. He grabs it and sticks it in his pack just as our other 316 newbie enters the room. Ilana asks him what he's found, he says nothing. She saw him put something in his pack, he pulls out a flashlight and says that's what he stashed away. Why the lie? Is he just playing it safe because he doesn't really know her? She tells him that one of their people found a man just standing in the water. One that wasn't on the plane. Caesar asks if he's one of "the ones that disappeared". She says he's not. He asks who the man is then, she says to ask him himself. As they leave the building we see a plane, carefully landed in brush to their left. They walk out into a familiar scene. People spread out on a dark beach, a large bon-fire burning. My very first gut instinct was that of the Others when the Losties arrived; get off our island! Funny how it's now ours and we don't want anyone new on it. Sitting on the beach, in the dark, cloaked in a Ajira Airways blanket the mystery man reveals himself to be John Locke. Is this where my "told ya so" come in? LOL

The next morning Locke stands at the waters edge looking out at the main island on the horizon. Ilana approaches him, introducing herself and offers him a mango. He asks her of the two outriggers on the beach. She says that they were already there but there was a third that the pilot and "some woman" took during the night. Locke should recognize these as the ones from the beach before he turned the FDW. He asks if they have a passenger list and she tells him that he'll have to ask Caesar about it. She seems none too happy that Caesar has taken it upon himself to "lead" them. She tells Locke that no one remembers him being on the plane. He says he doesn't remember being on it either. She asks him why he's dressed so nicely. He tells her that he's pretty sure that it's what he was going to be buried in. He tells her that he remembers dying. A little creeped out, she just walks away. And speaking of Lapidus, that man can land a plane can't he? The thing didn't even look like it had a scratch on it. And why did he land it? It doesn't appear to have "crashed". And could he have used the "runway" that Juliet joked Kate and Sawyer were building when they were held captive?

Tunisia - Unknown Date

Locke finds himself in the desert. Nauseous from his "travels", and probably the pain he's in from his broken leg, he vomits. He can't get up but looks around to see a video camera pointed exactly where he lays. Night falls and Locke sees a truck speeding towards him. The men race to collect him up and toss him into the back. They bring him into a hospital, it is now daylight. He asks repeatedly where he is but no one answers; they're too busy rushing to care for him. The doctor forces pills down his throat as Locke sees Matthew Abaddon watching from across the room. As the doctor then resets Locke's broken leg, the pain causes him to pass out. I nearly did the same just watching it. *cringe*

When he awakens he finds Charles Widmore sitting at his bedside. He tells Locke that he had a specialist flown in to do a better job of resetting his leg. He then marvels at how Locke looks exactly the same as he did when they met when he was 17. He asks him how long it's been, for him since they met. Locke tells him that it's been only 4 days to Widmore's 50+. Locke asks if it was him that set up the camera in the desert. He says that that is the "exit". That explains why both Ben and the polar bear turned up there. Well, kind of. Did the polar bear turn the FDW too? He tells him that he was afraid that Ben would fool him into leaving the island, as he did him. Widmore then tells Locke that he was the leader of the Others, protecting the island for more then 3 decades before Ben exiled him, just as he did John. 3 decades? That would mean that Penny was either conceived or born on the island. Could that be why Widmore was so mean to Des? He wanted to be sure he didn't take her to the island because she'd die like Charlotte did. ?? And after meeting the 17 year old Widmore, I have a hard time believing that he was ever their leader. Lived there maybe, but leader? Naw. Locke tells him that Ben was already gone when he left on his own accord. Widmore can't understand why he'd do this, then he realizes that he's come to bring the O6 back. Locke tells him that's not what he's come to do but Widmore says that he understands his lying to him. He tells Locke that the O6 have been back for more then 3 years and shows him a newspaper clipping of their heroic return. He tells them that they've been lying about where they were and what happened. This must make John happy since this is just what he asked Jack to do. Locke tells Widmore that he has to bring them back and Widmore vows to do everything in his power to help him. Locke can't understand why Widmore would help him and he tells him that there's a war coming and Locke has to be on the island in order for the right side to win.

Sitting outside of the hospital, Widmore gives Locke cash, a cell phone and passport with the fake Jeremy Bentham identity. He tells him that he can reach him on the cell anytime by pressing only 2-3. He shows Locke files on each of the people that have left the island and confesses that he's been watching them because he's "deeply invested in the future of the island". He tells Locke that he should probably keep his name out of their meetings because of Ben's lies. Locke asks how he knows he can trust him and Widmore points out that he hasn't tried to kill him as Ben has. Locke notes that Widmore sent the frieghter and C4 to the island, which Widmore defends, were meant to take Ben out. He says that Locke needs to take over. The island needs him and has for a long time. Locke doesn't believe he's a special as Widmore does. He then tells Widmore that Richard told him he'd have to die to save the island. This appears to surprise Widmore, who tells Locke that he doesn't know why Richard would say that, but he won't let it happen. He then introduces Locke to Abaddon and tells him that he'll be his driver and protector. Locke recognizes Abaddon from the hospital after his fall but says nothing. As they drive away Abaddon asks Locke if there's anything he can do for him, anyone he can contact, but he asks him not to talk to him, just drive. As they approach the airport Abaddon asks where they're going first and Locke tells him they're going to Santa Domingo.

Santa Domingo - Unknown Time

Sayid is helping build homes with a charity called Build Our World. Another volunteer tells him that he has a visitor. He sees Locke, sitting in a wheel chair, waving; he doesn't even look surprised to see him. We enter the conversation midway with Sayid telling Locke that he's not going back. He tells him how he was manipulated by Ben for 2 years, believing he was protecting everyone on the island. He asks John who's manipulating him. Locke says he's doing this on his own. He tells Sayid that he knows, deep down, that they never should have left. Sayid tells Locke of Nadia and how leaving the island brought them back together, even if it was only briefly. He then blames Locke's need to be on the island on not having anywhere else to go. Locke tells him where and how he can be reached should he change his mind. Sayid tells him he can always come back to Santa Domingo should he ever want to do some real good in the world.

New York, NY - Unknown Time

Sitting outside of a school in NYC, John asks Abaddon to look up Helen Norwood. When he asks if she's an old girlfriend Locke doesn't answer. The school bell rings and Walt emerges. He sees Locke across the street and crosses to see him. Again, he's not really surprised. Locke calls him on it. He tells Locke that he's been having dreams of him in a suit with people around him that want to hurt him. Locke says it's a good thing they're only dreams, but he knows better. Walt asks if his dad returned to the island because he hasn't heard from him in 3 years. Locke squirms a bit and tells him that the last he knew he was on a freighter just off of it. How does he know that? I don't remember anyone telling him that Michael was on the freighter. And why isn't he asking about Vincent. He asks what brings Locke out here. He says he's just checking up on him. He says he's doing good and they part ways. Abaddon asks if Locke didn't invite Walt along. He says no, that he's been through enough. When Walt visits Hurley later on he tells him that he was visited by Jeremy Bentham. Locke never told Walt that he was referring to himself as Bentham during this conversation. Could this just be an error or will there be another meeting? Locke tells him that if he can convince just one of the O6 to return, the rest will follow. Presumably, he's talking about Jack. He tells Abaddon that they're off to LA. If Jack can bring them all back, why didn't he just start there? As they get in the car, it's revealed that Ben is watching them.

Santa Rosa, California - Unknown Time

If Jack is the one to convince, why is he visiting Hurley next? Anyway, Hurley's outside of Santa Rosa drawing a picture of an Egyptian sphinx. BTW, "sphinx" is "strangler" in Greek. Locke rolls up in his wheelchair and Hurley hardly bats an eye. He tries not the make eye contact as he notes that Locke must not have "made it". He tells him it's cool and that he's not the first to visit him. He asks why he's in a wheelchair and Locke says it's because he fell down a hole. Hurley asks him if that's how he died. Locke tells him that he's not dead. Hurley looks almost sorry for Locke, like he's one of those dead people that doesn't know it ala Sixth Sense. Locke tries to convince him when Hurley just asks a nearby nurse if he's talking to a man in a wheelchair. When she says yes, he nearly jumps out of his skin. FINALLY! Someone reacts to Locke being off the island! Funny how a living Locke is scarier to him than the dead one was. LOL He asks what he's doing here and Locke tells him that they need to go back to the island. Hurley tells him that there's no way he's going to get Kate or Jack or Sun. He then notices Abaddon and tells Locke to be cool but they're being watched. When Locke tells him that Abaddon is with him Hurley loses it. He tells him that Abaddon is a bad guy and that he approached him after the crash saying he worked for Oceanic. Once he realizes that Locke and Abaddon are together he freaks out and asks to be taken back inside. Abaddon tells Locke that he needs to step up his game since he's now gotten 3 strikes. Irritated, Locke asks Abaddon what exactly he does for Mr. Widmore. He tells him that he gets people where they need to go and asks if Locke really doesn't remember meeting him after his fall. He points out that he was the one that pushed him to go on his walkabout. The same walkabout that got him on flight 815. The same flight that got him to the island. Locke tells him that he remembers.

Los Angeles, California - Unknown Time (notice how all of the places the O6 are have either saint or angel in their names?)

Locke's at Kate's. Again we come in mid conversation. Kate tells him that the answer is no. She assures him that she understands that every one on the island will die if she doesn't go back. She tells Locke that the only reason he wants to stay on the island is because he doesn't love anyone. Huh? Are they just trying to re-work Helen into the story line? Is that why Kate doesn't want to go back, because she does; and it's not the man's life she could save if she returned? Locke tells her that he did love someone but it just didn't work out because he was angry and obsessed. Kate points out that he still hasn't changed.

Outside Locke asks Abaddon if he's found Helen. He tells him he hasn't. Locke gets angry at his inability to help him when he seems to be able to help everyone else. Abaddon takes Locke to the cemetery. Helen's grave is before them. Abaddon tells him that she died of a brain aneurysm. Locke believes that if he had just changed they'd still be together but Abaddon notes that she still would have died. Locke doesn't believe that. Abaddon tells him that she's where she's meant to be, where her path led her. Just as his path leads back to the island. Abaddon tells him that Widmore told him what Richard had said about him dying. When did he do that? Locke told Widmore just before he met Abaddon and they left. He asks Locke if his death is inevitable or if it's a choice. Locke asks if Abaddon thinks he wants to die. Locke is back in the car, Abaddon is loading his wheelchair into the back. Just then Abaddon is shot twice from behind. As he falls to the ground Locke struggles to get into the drivers seat. As he speeds away there is one more gun shot and we see Abaddon's body fall to the ground.

Locke speeds through an intersection and a red light causing an accident. He wakes in the hospital, his head and face cut badly. He looks to the right and sees Jack. Jack asks Locke what he's doing in his hospital. Locke tells him it's destiny that he was brought to Jack's hospital, Jack says it was probability based on where his accident occurred. Locke tells him that they need to return to the island and Jack's the only one that can get all of them to join him. He tells Jack that someone was trying to kill him to keep him from getting back to the island because he's important. Jack tells him that he's delusional and that he's just a normal, lonely old man that crashed on an island. He gets up to leave and Locke tells him that his father says hello. Jack tells him that his father is dead. Locke tells him that he saw him on the island, his name is Christian and he says hello. This obviously gets to Jack but he insists that Locke leave him and everyone else alone and leaves. Jack later tells us that Locke told him that something terrible happened to everyone they left behind and that it was his fault. This didn't happen during this meeting, do they have another or was this just an error?

Back in his hotel room Locke writes the letter to Jack. He tosses the cell phone that Widmore gave him in the trash and grabs a paper bag from Angel's Hardware store. In it is an extension cord. He ties it off and wraps it over a pipe in the ceiling where tiles were rotting away. He climbs a table and loops the cord around his neck. Why is he doing this? Does he feel he's failed everyone else and knows this way he'll please Richard? Does he think that his death alone will bring the O6 back and save the island? It takes a few minutes but just as he's gotten up the courage to jump there's a frantic knock at his door. Ben yells for him from the other side. He breaks the door down and sees Locke. Locke asks how Ben found him and he confesses that he has a man watching the O6 to keep them safe, when Locke showed up in Santa Domingo the man called Ben. Locke begins to ask who his man is when Ben interrupts and asks him what he's doing. John cries and asks what everyone wants from him. Ben tells him that his just trying to protect him. Locke realizes that it was Ben that killed Abaddon, which he confesses to, insisting again that he was just trying to protect him. He tells Locke that Abaddon was dangerous because he worked for Widmore. Locke tells Ben that Widmore is not dangerous and that he saved him. Ben tells him that Widmore is just trying to use him to get back to the island. Remember, "Widmore is the reason I moved the island!" He tells Locke that he's important and nothing can happen to him. He begs him to let him help him. Locke tells him that he's a failure and there's no helping him. He tells him how he couldn't get any of the O6 to return and that he's no leader. Just as he about to jump from the table Ben blurts out that Jack booked a flight from LA to Sydney, leaving tonight. He tells him that whatever he said got to him and he can get the rest. This must be when Jack started flying, hoping to crash. Locke's knowledge of Christian must have gotten to him. Why Sydney? Does he think he needs to take the same route or is there more to this trip? Is he looking into his father's death more? This works, Locke climbs down with Ben's help. Ben tells him that they'll get them, together. He says that they'll start with Sun since Locke hasn't visited her yet. He tells Ben that Jin's alive and doesn't want Sun to know. This news shocks Ben. Why? He didn't know that Jin was on the freighter. Is he surprised to hear that anyone else on the island has survived? Locke tells him that he's supposed to tell Sun that Jin's body washed up on the beach, if she asks and that he has Jin's wedding ring to prove it. Ben agrees to keep Locke's promise. He helps John to his wheelchair and says that he's not sure what they'll do next, but they'll figure something else. Locke tells him of Eloise Hawking. Ben looks surprised to hear her name and Locke asks if he knows her. Ben says he does and grabs Locke from behind with the extension cord and strangles him.

After killing him, Ben hangs Locke's body to simulate a suicide. He cleans his fingerprints from the room and takes Jin's ring that Locke had placed on his nightstand. As he leaves the room he tells Locke "I'll miss you, John. I really will". This leads me to believe that Ben doesn't know bringing Locke's body back to the island will bring him back to life. Maybe Hawking tricks him into bringing it back knowing what will happen if he does.

If Jack takes his first "break down" plane trip the day after Locke visited him, I'm wondering how long he was hanging in that room before someone found him. Jack had made several trips, lost his job, became obsessed with finding the island and addicted to drugs all before he saw the obituary. Speaking of the obit... where did the newspaper get the personal info on "Jeremy Bentham"? Ben? Widmore?

Hydra Island - Unknown Date

Caesar's reading some DHARMA files in the Hydra station when Locke enters. Notice how the island has healed him again? He tells Caesar who DHARMA is and tells him that he's spent more than 100 days on this island. Technically he spent more then 100 days on the other island, but let's not be picky. Caeser thinks that Locke means he was on the island already when the plane crashed but he tells him he wasn't, that he'd left but he can't quite explain how long ago it was. Caesar asks him how he got back but Locke tells him that he's not sure. Caesar tells Locke about the plane crash and how there was a loud noise and bright light and then Hurley vanished. Some of the other passengers saw it happen to the other O6 to. He asks John if he knows what happened to them. Locke says he might but he'd need to see the passenger list. Caesar says that the pilot took it when he ran off. He tells him that everyone has been accounted for except those that vanished and those that were hurt.

He takes Locke to the hurt passengers, the last is turned on his side. Locke goes around the bed and recognizes that it's Ben. Caesar asks if he knows him and Locke says "Yeah. He's the man that killed me."

LOST

"Where" are Locke and the survivors of 316? Obviously not in the 70s like Jin, Kate, Jack and Hurley because Daniel's notes are aged and the DHARMA station is abandoned. I'm guessing they're in the present. So, if the O6 were sucked back in time, who's with Lapidus? And where are they going with the outrigger and passenger list? How will John get back to his people? Will he try to catch them in a leap so he can go with them? Could it have been him shooting at himself in the outrigger, trying to stop him so he could go back with them?

Who's the bad real guy? All along we've known that Ben could go either way but never once did we think that maybe Widmore wasn't bad. Ben made him out that way. His treatment of Desmond led us to believe it. The freighter that he sent to the island made the point stronger but now... now he seems to be a good guy. Especially after watching Ben strangle Locke with is bare hands. But could Ben have needed to kill Locke? We've seen in the past that the island won't let people kill themselves if it's not finished with them. Maybe Ben knew Locke wouldn't be able to kill himself and instead did it for him because, as we know, he has to die in order to save the island. Or, maybe Ben just killed Locke because he got the information from him that he needed. Hawking can get him back to the island.

Regarding where Locke "hung himself". According to the obituary Jack had, Jeremy Bentham's body was found hung in The Grand Tower, not the Westerfield Hotel where it actually was. Again, error or is there more to the story?

I'd like to go back to "316" for a second. Is it possible that the O6 weren't meant to jump? After rewatching last weeks episode again I noticed that Hawking told Jack that his window would close in 36 hours. When the show went back from J, K & H in the water to Hawking's church is said "46 hours earlier". Did they miss their window and accidentally go into the wrong window?

5.06 "316"

Ms. Hawking tells Jack, Ben and Sun how to return to the island.

The title of this episode is “316”. Could be in reference the to flight number our O6 take back to the island or is it in reference to the Bible scripture, John 3:16? “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Could “God” in this reference be Jacob and the “Son”, Locke? Those that believe in them have eternal life, like Richard? This same Bible verse is also hidden in the source code of the “Ajira Airways” website.

Off the Island – 2008

Ms. Hawking takes Ben, Jack, Sun and Des down to the basement of the church. There’s a “Caution High Voltage” sign on the door. They enter in through a hatch door with a never-before-seen DHARMA logo on it. Inside the room, a large pendulum, hanging from darkness, swings back and forth as old computers change the numbers on a latitude/longitude machine. There’s a chalk board with formulas on the back wall. Stone pillars placed around the room remind me of the 4-toed statue we’ve briefly seen on the island. Ms. Hawking tells Jack that this station is called “The Lamppost”. CS Lewis also had a lamppost in his Chronicle of Narnia novels. The lamppost was used to mark the exit from Narnia to the real world. BTW, CS Lewis is also Charlotte’s initials. Charlotte Staples Lewis. The Lamppost station is “how they found the island”, Ms. Hawking explains. Jack asks Ben if he knew about this place and he says no. Based on the look on his face, I believe he may actually be telling the truth. Of course, he’s such a pro at this lying thing; Ms. Hawking even says he’s probably lying.

Des got Hawking’s address from Widmore. Why wouldn’t Widmore be using her to find the island and get back himself? I’m guessing he doesn’t know about this station so it could be safe to assume that Ben doesn’t either.

Jack sees a photo of the island on the wall that reads “9/23/54 – U.S. ARMY – OP 264 – TOP SECRET – EYES ONLY”. Oceanic 815 crashed there on 9/22/04, one day shy of 50 years from when this photo was taken. As Ms. Hawking begins to explaining the station to the group, she asks for Jack’s attention. She tells them that the room was built, years ago, over a pocket of energy. She says that these pockets are located all around the world. We know that one is on the island; could another be in Tunisia, where Ben “landed” after turning the FDW? Where Charlotte found the polar bear? She says that they’d gathered evidence that the island existed but couldn’t find it. Then a “clever fellow” (Faraday?) created the pendulum and told them that rather then looking for where the island was supposed to be, to start looking for where it was going to be. She says that “this fellow” presumed, correctly, that the island was always moving; explaining why the Losties were never rescued. That would mean that it’s been moving since the day they crashed on it… before even? I can’t wait to see some proof to back that up. If it were moving all the time, how come they never ran into themselves? Where were the light and the humming sound? How could the Others travel to the mainland so easily? How would Ben have the exact coordinates to send Michael and Walt away or to travel by submarine? We’ve only seen and heard the light and humming twice, other than when Ben turned the FDW. First when Des almost missed pressing the button and ultimately crashed Oceanic 815 and then when he turned the failsafe key. Are those the only 2 times since the crash? Hawking tells them that the “fellow” and his team have determined that the movements are not random and have created equations that can determine where the island will be at a certain points in time. These are their windows to get back. She tells them that their window will close in 36 hours.

Des can’t believe his ears. He thinks they’re nuts for willingly returning to the island. He tells them that only reason he’s there is to deliver a message. He tells Hawking that her son, Daniel Faraday, asked him to tell her that he and the others on the island need her help. She doesn’t even flinch at the mention of Daniel’s name. She says that she is helping. She, nor anyone else, asks how Des got the message. Did she already know he was coming with it? As he walks away Ms. Hawking tells him that the island isn’t done with him yet. He tells her that after wasting 4 years of his life pushing the button that she told him was “his purpose”, he’s done with it. He warns Jack that he and the others are just being used and begs him to ignore whatever she tells him to do and storms off, brotha’. I thought for sure he was going to just reach out at one point and just stop the pendulum from swinging since he kept walking right past it.

Without pause, Ms. Hawking tells Jack that there’s a flight, Ajira Flight 316, flying through their window and that in order to get back they all need to be on it and to try to recreate the original flight as best they can. She tells him that he needs to get as many of the same people on the flight as possible. If he doesn’t, the results would be unpredictable. In private she gives Jack an envelope with his name written on the front. She tells him that it’s Locke’s suicide note. Jack is obviously distressed to learn that Locke hung himself. She then tells him that he needs to take Locke’s body in replacement of his father’s and that he needs to give Locke something of his fathers. Jack doesn’t understand why Locke needs to play proxy to his father and thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. She tells him that that’s why it’s “called a leap of faith, Jack”.

Out in the church, Ben is sitting in a pew, either praying or scheming. Jack asks him where Sun is and Ben tells him that she left. He asks where Locke is…err, his body, the coffin. Another Freudian slip? Ben tells him that a friend is looking after “it”. This friend, as we know, is Jill the butcher. Ben asks what he and Ms. Hawking talked about and Jack said that it was nothing that matters. He asks who this woman is and how she knows these things. I’m confused as to why he or anyone else, hasn’t asked about her relationship to Daniel.

Ben stands and points out a painting hanging in the room. Caravaggio’s The Incredulity of Saint Thomas. He tells Jack of Thomas’ bravery in persuading others to go with Jesus to Judea, where he would probably be murdered, by telling them “Let us also go, that we might die with him”. This bravery was not remembered though, instead he’s remembered as “Doubting Thomas” for wanting to touch Jesus’ wounds after resurrection, to be convinced. Jack asks if he was convinced after touching them. Ben tells him “Of course he was. We’re all convinced sooner or later, Jack”.

Ben goes to leave and Jack asks where he’s going. He tells him that he’d made a promise to an old friend, “just a loose end that needs tying up”. He tells him that he’ll meet him at the airport after picking up Locke’s coffin. We all know what the promise was and where he’s headed. Watch out Penny! Of course, Des left like an hour ago, how the heck did he follow him? *shrug* Of course, should Ben be heading for Penny, what are the chances that Widmore didn’t have Des followed on his own and there will be someone there to protect her?

Jack’s sitting in a bar, staring at a drink, but never drinks it. There’s a blonde woman sitting a couple seats from him, and for some reason I can’t help but wonder if she’s important somehow. Anyway, his cell phone rings. He’s vague but not happy about something someone did. Could this woman be playing proxy to Ana Lucia? Will she wind up on flight 316?

He’s now walking down a corridor with a nurse. She tells him that “he’s” got to start following the rules or "he’ll" have to move to their “fully assisted facility”. Jack says that he understands. He enters a hall where a magician is performing for a group of people. The magician uncovers a white rabbit with a black ring around its eye. It’s been a while since the black & white theme has played a part in our show, or maybe just a while since I’ve noticed it. FYI – “White Rabbit” was the name of the first episode that Jack saw his recently deceased father up and walking around. Jack quietly gets the attention of an older gentleman, Ray, in the back of the room and asks him if he’s ready to leave. As they walk down another corridor, Jack asks where he was headed this time. Ray tells him that it doesn’t matter, anywhere “is better than here” he says. They enter his room and Jack notices that he even packed a suitcase. Ray says that he always does because one of these times he’ll get away and they’ll never find him again. I don’t understand why this man is in this home. He seems to me like he’s plenty competent to take care of himself. Jack offers to ‘help you unpack, Granddad”. Why was he calling him Ray? Ray (I can call him that, he’s not my grandfather) asks Jack how he’s been and how Kate is. Jack tells him that they’re not together anymore. Ray says that now he’ll have more time to visit but Jack tells him that he can’t. He’s going away. When Ray asks where, Jack tells him “somewhere better than here”. Touché. As he unpacks the suitcase he finds a pair of dress shoes on the bottom. He asks Ray if they’re his and he tells them they’re not, they belonged to his dad (Christian). Jack’s mom sent them to him after Christian passed away. Jack asks if he can have them. “Be my guest” Ray responds.

WTH? Why the sudden introduction of an entirely new character that we’ll never see again since Jack is leaving for “Guam” tonight? Seemed odd to me. Maybe TOO odd. Does Ray have some kind of connection to the island too? Was it just a coincidence that he tried to run away tonight? Or that he “mixed” the shoes in with is stuff? I’ve learned there are no coincidences on this show.

Jack returns to his messy house. Empty bottles are EVERYWHERE. He searches for a full one. Finding it, he goes to pour himself a drink when he hears something from his bedroom. Again, why do the previews have to ruin this stuff? I knew it was Kate since they showed the kiss in last weeks preview. She’s lying on his bed, she’s obviously been crying. Jack asks what she’s doing there. She asks if he’s still going to the island, he tells her yes. She says she’s going with him. He asks her what happened. “Where’s Aaron?” he asks. She tells him not to ask questions. Never ask about Aaron again or I’m not going, understand? “Yes” WHAT?!?! Screw her. He’s your nephew and she’s obviously done something wrong. How could he just say yes? Anyway, I have a few theories as to where Aaron may be. My first thought is that she gave him to Claire’s mother, Carole. Or maybe she gave him to her own mother. My last theory is that she gave him to Cassidy, Sawyer’s baby-momma. Remember, Kate knows about her because that’s what Sawyer whispered to her before jumping from the helicopter. Aaron would be safest with her because she has the smallest connection to the island of the three. My only question is why she’d keep it from Jack. What could she have done that’s so terrible that she can’t tell Jack? I’m guessing she did something in her past that no one knows about that’s come back to bite her in the ass. Something that, even now, she can’t bring herself to tell Jack. Something that possibly Ben knows about and used to actually *get* Aaron from her? I don’t know. This one’s got me stumped for sure.

She kisses Jack and, well, we can all guess where it goes from there. I wonder here, is she just using him for comfort or is there more to this encounter? Ms. Hawking told them that they had to recreate the 815 flight as best they can. Has someone forced Kate’s hand into getting pregnant so she can play the role of Claire? And if she is *supposed* to get pregnant, she has to do it before she returns to the island because if she got pregnant while she was there, she’d die.

The next morning Jack makes some juice and coffee for Kate. He’s spunky but she seems like she just wants to leave. They sit at the table and she notices the shoes. She tells Jack that they’re probably not the best choice for the island. He tells her that they were his father’s and how he didn’t have dress shoes for his dad when he dressed him for his coffin and instead just put white tennis shoes on him because he wasn’t worth the time or effort to get nice shoes. That’s why he’s always wearing those shoes! Kate asks why he doesn’t just get rid of them if they make him feel sad. Hmm.. could there be more to what she just said then we think? Could it have something to do with where Aaron is? Just then his cell phone rings. Kate tells him to answer it; she’ll see him at the airport and leaves. How’d she know about the airport?

Ben’s on a pay phone at the pier, covered in blood and looking pretty beat to hell. He tells Jack that he’s been delayed and asks if he can bring Locke’s coffin to the airport. He tells him where it is. Jack asks what’s happened; Ben asks him to just do it, please. Who did this to Ben? Desmond? Penny? Widmore’s men? Or maybe Sayid. He didn’t beat up anyone in this episode yet.

Jack shows up at “Simon’s Butcher Shop” but it’s closed. I’d like to point out here that I noted back in “The Lie” that Charlies’s father is a butcher. His name was Simon. Hmm. Only catch… his butcher shop was in England; this on is in LA. Jack knocks and Jill comes to the door. Ha ha! Jack and Jill. Knowing full well who he is, she shows him into the cooler and tells him that she’ll bring the van around back for him. After she leaves, Jack opens the casket and puts his father’s shoes on Locke. First of all, I thought for sure that he’d be wearing white tennis shoes when Jack opened the bottom half of the coffin. Secondly, the entire time he was talking to him and swapping the shoes, I was waiting for Locke to talk back. All in good time. After he put the shoes on him he tucks the unopened suicide note into his vest and tells him that he’s heard everything he’s had to say. He wanted him to go back, he’s going back.

At the airport, the attendant question Jack’s relationship to Locke and explains procedure for bringing the coffin onboard the plane. After receiving his boarding pass Jack spots Sun. When he walks away to see her, the man in line behind him offers his condolences. Jack says thanks. This man is credited as Caesar. I believe we’ll be seeing more of him.

Jack greets Sun and tells her that he was afraid she may have changed her mind. I thought maybe she’d have Ji-Yeon with her. Guess she’s ok about getting stranded on the island again, for God knows how long, without her little girl. Could she not have had her flown in since they spoke with Ms. Hawking yesterday? *shrug* She tells Jack that she has to go to the island if there’s even a chance that Jin’s alive.

Sun and Jack see Sayid in the distance being led to the boarding gate, in handcuffs, by a Marshall. Jack and Sun look at each other, confused. What’s going on here? Could Ben have turned Sayid in for one of the dozens of murders he’s committed for him since returning home? That’s one way to get him on that plane.

In a very familiar scene, we see Hurley reading a comic book sitting in the airport. BTW, this Spanish comic book is called Y: The Last Man Vol. 3: One Small Step. It’s written by one of the writers for the show. Anyway, woo-hoo! Hurley made it! He hears a woman announce that his flight is boarding and that there are plenty of seats available for all the stand-bys. Hurley jumps from his seat and tells her that there are no available seats because he bought them all. She confirms and tells him that these people just want to get to their destinations. He scans the crowd, seeing families and children and tells her that they can take the next flight. What a good guy. Trying to protect these people from what’s about to happen. Speaking of that… how did he know to be here? My guess… one of his dead friends. Probably Charlie, hence the guitar case he’s carrying. Could he be bringing the guitar in hopes that Charlie will be alive on the island? Maybe it turns out to be the one that Locke finds for him with the 815 wreckage. Or maybe it’s just filled with Apollo Bars. LOL

Jack sees Hurley and seems a bit giddy. He’s excited to see him and asks how he knew to be here. Hurley coldly tells him that it doesn’t matter. Ok then. They board the plane.

As he boards, Jack and Sayid share a look. Sayid looks jumpy, like he needs to talk to Jack but can’t because of the Marshall sitting beside him. Could it be that Sayid is just shocked to see Jack boarding the plane? Is he noticing that all of the O6 are there and it’s dawning on him what’s about to happen? Oh, and the Marshall’s credited name is Ilana, which, again, leads me to believe we’ll be seeing more of her too. He walks by Sun, who’s admiring her wedding ring. He makes it to Kate’s seat and leans in, telling her that he’s happy she made it. She almost struggles to make eye contact with him. Caesar puts his items in the overhead compartment a few seats in front of Jack, Hurley sits beside him across the aisle. As the flight attendant says that they have everyone Ben comes running in. He’s looks like hell. His face is all cut up, his left arm in a sling. He enters the plane and sees Sayid. He has a legitimately surprised look on his face. Hmmm… maybe Sayid’s arrest wasn’t his doing. Hurley sees him and freaks out. “He can’t come” he tells Jack. Jack tells him that Ben has to be here if they’re going to go back. Hurley tells Jack that no one told him that “he’d be here”. “Who told *you* to be here Hugo?” Ben asks. The flight attendant asks if everything is ok. Jack says yes, right Hurley? Like a good boy, Hurley says “yes, I’ll be fine Jack” and sits down. When the flight attendant hears Jack’s name she tells him that something of his was found in his cargo. Well go figure. Something of HIS was found in HIS cargo? Shocking. It’s Locke’s suicide note. Ben asks what it is; Jack tells him it’s nothing. Jack asks Ben what’s going to happen to the other people on the plane (guess they got tickets before Hurley bought them all up), Ben, oh sweet Ben, says “Who cares”.

Take off.

Why aren’t they dressed better? Seriously? They know where they’re going. Why the hell is Jack in a suit? Where are the hiking boots Kate suggested earlier? Really?

When the seatbelt light goes off, Jack moves up to sit beside Kate. Another thing. Why aren’t they sitting together? They’re completely spread out all over the place with empty seats everywhere. Anyway, Jack notes that this is “crazy”. Kate asks which part. He says that Sayid & Hurley are here. How? She says ala Ben, “They bought a ticket”. Suddenly it seems that Jack’s taken the role of Locke and Kate’s taken Jack’s. Jack thinks it’s odd that they’d all end up back together. She notes that just because they’re on the same plane, they’re not “together”. Wow, that’s cold. The love and admiration that Kate and Hurley once had for Jack is definitely missing today. Just then the pilot can be heard over the loudspeaker. He introduces himself a Frank J. Lapidus. Wait. What? Holy crap! That one took me by surprise! Jack too. He gets up and asks the flight attendant if she can tell Frank that he’s on board. She calls him and a clean shaven, almost unrecognizable Frank emerges from the cockpit. He greets “Doc” and notes how it’s a small world. Wasn’t Frank supposed to go “under cover” like Des? What happened when Widmore found out that he made if off the island? Anyway, he tells Jack that he’s been flying this route for about 8 months. Just then he notices Sayid and Hurley, then Kate and Sun and asks Jack, “We’re not going to Guam, are we?” Great line! I like Frank.

It’s now night. Jack and Ben are sitting across the aisle from one another. Ben’s reading Ulysses by James Joyce. Jack asks how he can be reading. Ben says “My mother taught me.” This line seems innocent enough but we all know that Ben’s mother died giving birth to him. Why would that be his instinctual response? He tells Jack that he’s reading because it’s better then just waiting for something to happen. Something makes me feel like Ben’s done this before. Jack asks him if he knew that Locke hung himself. Ben says no. Lying again. Jack tells him of the suicide note and how it’s been “following” him around like Locke needs him to read it. Ben asks him if he’s afraid to read it. Jack asks if it was his fault that Locke killed himself. Ben says no and offers to give Jack privacy to read the letter. He gets up and heads towards the front of the plane. Could he be headed to the restroom? Bernard was in the tail-section restroom when 815 crashed.

I loved how they re-created the first plane trip yet all took on new roles.

815 – Cpt. Seth Norris 316 – Cpt. Frank Lapidus
815 – Kate was a fugitive 316 – Sayid’s a fugitive
815 – Marshall Edward Mars 316 – Marshall Ilana
815 - Charlie had a guitar case 316 – Hurley has a guitar case
815 – Claire was pregnant 316 – Kate could possibly be pregnant
815 – Bernard was in the restroom 316 – Ben could be in the restroom
815 – Rose had Bernard’s wedding ring 316 – Sun has Jin’s wedding ring
815 – Christian was dead 316 – Locke is dead

“Jack, I wish you had believed me. JL” Instantly the plane hits turbulence. The O6 know just what’s happening. Hurley turns to Caesar and tells him he to buckle his seat belt then puts on a eye mask. Suddenly there’s humming and a bright light. Are they experiencing a “flash” rather than a “crash”?

On the island - 1970s

An eye opens, it’s Jack’s. Miss the eyes! Jack’s lying in the jungle, reminiscent of the pilot episode. LOVE THIS SHOW! Take a look at these comparison shots.

Pilot

And this episode

He hears Hurley in the distance yelling for help. He sees him in the lagoon below a water fall. I believe this is the same lagoon where Sawyer and Kate found the Marshall’s briefcase. Jack dives down the waterfall to Hurley who apparently can’t swim, like Charlie claimed. He pulls him to shallower waters and notices Kate lying on the rocks near the edge. He swims over to her and wakes her. She asks if they’re back. Jack says they are. She asks what happened but none of them remember. They don’t even know if/where the plane crashed. Kate asks where Sun, Sayid and Ben are. They decide to split up and search. Just then they hear something approaching and music playing. It’s the VW van! Shiny brand new!! Someone in a DHARAM jumpsuit steps out toting a rifle. They point it at Jack, Kate and Hurley. Hurley recognizes the man as Jin! Jin lowers his gun and seems to have a small smirk on his face. Does he recognize them? My guess it that, after Locke turned the FDW the Lefties were stuck in early DHARMA time and just took on DHARMA identities. That would explain Jin Workman and why Daniel was below the Orchid in the season premiere. Could this be it? Were the Oceanic 815 survivors meant to be in the 70s all along? Is that what makes them all so special? Are they their own parents or the parents of other important characters? If they’re DHARMA why would Richard want them back? Could they be Others infiltrating DHARMA? Does Richard need their help to purge DHARMA? So many questions. Aren’t they supposed to be answering questions now, not creating more! Also, has it been 3 years for them like it was for the O6?

Bad news? Looks like we won’t learn anything about this next week. Good news. We WILL find out what happened to Locke after he turned the FDW and how he ended up “dead”.

Another thing… When they skipped back from when Jack, Kate and Hurley “landed” on the island to when Ms. Hawking was explaining to them how they’d get back, it’ said “46 hours earlier”. Didn’t she tell them that their window would close in 36 hours? Did they not go through the window they were supposed to? Also, though I’m glad it didn’t take the entire season to get them back, I wish they hadn’t shown us in the first minutes of the show that they’d get there tonight. Also, that Hurley and Kate were with Jack. Kind of ruined the surprise when we saw Hurley in the airport. And lastly… this can’t be how Ben always gets on and off the island. If so, he would have known about the lamppost. Maybe it just has to be done this way because it’s moving. But didn’t Hawking says it’s always moving. Pardon me whilst my head explodes a little bit.
