5.03 "Jughead"

Surprising discoveries are made when the "Lefties" learn who's attacking them. Desmond goes in search of Daniel's mother in hopes to help those he left behind.
I’m going to do this recap a little different. Rather then jumping around like the show does, I’m going to recap by “year”.

Flashback, about 1 year after the O6 are rescued.

Desmond runs frantically though a village in the Philippines (based on the “Mabuhay” sign, which means “Welcome” or “Long Live” in Filipino). He’s searching for a doctor named Efren Salonga. He finds him and the two rush back to Des’ boat to find Penny in active labor. I wish they hadn’t shown this in the previews because it would have been a sweet surprise. The doctor helps her deliver her baby boy. Des and Penny kiss and profess their love for one another as they gaze upon their bundle of joy.

Off the island in 2007

Des and his son, now about 2 years old, are sitting on their sailboat. They’re headed to Oxford. Des tells his son, Charlie (who could be named after Penny’s dad, but I believe he’s named after our Charlie. How sweet is that?) of the island he used to live on but hasn’t visited in many years. He’s hinting to “the” island but in reality he’s speaking of Great Britain. He tells Charlie about Scotland where his mommy and daddy fell in love. Penny joins them and tells Charlie that that’s also where daddy broke her heart (totally uncalled for, if you ask me). She also mentions how Des left out his grandfather that sent a boat load of people to the island to kill him. It’s funny here how it sounds like she’s talking about the same island. She doesn’t say “that other island” she just says “the island” like she’s still talking about the same one. I don’t think there’s anything to her comment more then just bad writing.

Des defends his choice to go back to Oxford and promises that after he’s done, he’ll be done with it for good. Penny doesn’t understand why he just remembered what Daniel asked of him 2 days ago. Des can’t explain it but knows he has to do it to save everyone left behind. Penny asks him to promise that he’ll never go back to the island. He replies “Why in God’s name would I ever want to go back there?”

At Oxford (looking quite Charlie-esque himself with the scarf and glasses) the receptionist uses her computer and tells Des that there is no record of a Faraday ever working at the university. This receptionist, Moira according to the credits, is played by the same person that played Jenna, an Oceanic employee that was working at the boarding gate of Flight 815. Coincidence? Des argues with her and says that he visited Daniel while he was working here. She asks if he remembers when that was but since it was during his time jumping, he doesn’t recall. She asks why he’s inquiring, Des just excuses himself.

As he’s leaving Des takes a detour up to the physics lab where Daniel was working. Side note… the sign for the physics lab has changed since Des’ last visit. Before it read “Physics Department Clarendon 142-08” now it reads “Physics Department Claredon 142-08” (with no “n” in Clarendon). Typo? When Des reaches Daniel’s lab he finds the door sealed with a fumigation sticker. Des breaks in anyway and finds Daniel’s lab dilapidated and abandoned. Everything is covered with tarps. He finds a broken picture frame on the floor. The photo is of Daniel and a blonde woman. As Des is looking at the maze Daniel’s rat Eloise ran, a custodian arrives. He tells Des that Oxford is covering up Daniel’s work because they’re ashamed that he was using a human subject, a young woman. The same young woman from the photo maybe?

Des tracks down the woman, Theresa. She appears to be in a coma but her sister, Abigail tells him that she’s just “away” right now. She's not unconcious but unaware of her actual surroundings. Des knows what’s happening to her, that she’s stuck time jumping like he was. Abigail tells him that Daniel abandoned her this way and that Charles Widmore has been paying for her medical support. It’s then revealed that Widmore funded all of Daniel’s research at Oxford.

Des barges into Widmore’s office and demands to know where he can find Faraday’s mother. He tells him that he knows that he funded Daniel’s research and that he’s supporting Theresa. He refuses to answer any of his questions, just wants the address. Widmore gives it to him and asks about Penny’s welfare. Side note… Widmore finds the address in the back of his book, leading me to believe that the woman’s last name falls at the end of the alphabet (more on this later…). Des takes the Los Angeles address from Widmore as he warns him that she won’t be happy to see him because she’s “a very private person”. Widmore then begs him to take Penny and go back to where ever they were hiding as this business has been going on for “many, many years” and he wants Penny to be safe from it. Really? Or do you want to follow Des so you can find Penny? I hope not. He actually seems sincere that's why I'm suspicious.

Des returns to the boat and tells Penny that Faraday’s mother has died so there’s nothing more to do. She can tell he’s lying (yeah, he’s really bad at it!) and asks for the truth. He tells her about LA but says it doesn’t matter because he promised her that this was it. He says he’ll just forget about it and any other memories he may have. She knows he can’t and tells him that she and Charlie will go to LA with him.

On the Island in 1954

Miles, Charlotte and Daniel, along with two redshirts that survived the arrow attack head to the creek to meet the remaining Lefties. Dan asks Charlotte how she’s feeling and she says that she still has a headache. I noticed here that the tank she’s wearing under her shirt is red… could this be a sign of what’s to come for Charlotte? He asks if she has blurred vision or dizzy spells. She says both, surprised that he’d know that. She asks if he knows what’s wrong with her just as the redshirts tell them they’ve arrived at the creek. No one else is there. Miles notices a trip wire and visually follows it to explosives. He shouts a warning but the redshirts trigger it and are killed. Miles, Charlotte and Daniel recover being tossed through the air by the explosives to find a group of people dressed in Army fatigues standing over them. A young blonde woman, Ellie, asks who’s in charge and Miles tells her that Daniel is. This appears to come as a surprise to Mr. Faraday. She puts her gun on Daniel and says “you just can’t stay away can you?”. At first I thought she meant Dan personally but now I’m thinking she just meant the military as a whole, since she believes that's who they are. She asks where the rest of their group is, noting that 20 survived the beach attack. Miles says that their landmines probably killed them. She says they didn’t put them there, blaming Miles’ group for planting them. Ellie and her group then begin walking the 3 to their camp.

Meanwhile, Locke, Sawyer and Juliet debate what to do with the 2 attackers they’re captured. Locke notes that they’re guns are M1 Garand that look brand new despite being 50-60 years old. Sawyer doesn’t care, he just wants to know where Locke’s been. Locke says he should be asking when he’s been. Ala a classic Back to the Future quote. Sawyer then notices that Locke’s leg and asks who shot him. Before he can answer Juliet cuts him off and reminds them that they have more important things going on now. Side note… Juliet’s a doctor. She should have been a little more concerned with Locke’s wound. It almost felt like she was trying to change the subject. I’m wondering now, did Ethan go back to the barracks and tell them of John Locke? Did Juliet already know who shot him? Does she know more? When the 2 attackers begin speaking to each other in a foreign language, Juliet reveals that she knows it. Latin. They’re Others. The Others are required to speak Latin because it’s the “enlightened language”. Juliet asks them to take them to their camp and notes that they are not enemies. She asks if Richard Alpert is at the camp. Locke recognizes Richard’s name. Just as “Cunningham” is about to give them directions, “Jones” breaks his neck and runs. Sawyer directs Locke to shoot him but he freezes. Sawyer takes the gun and shoots but misses. Locke tells Sawyer that he couldn’t shoot him because he’s “one of my people”.

As Miles, Charlotte and Dan are taken to the camp Dan notices bandages on one of their captor’s hands. Just then Miles begins to act erratically and tells Daniel that they just walked over a fresh grave that’s less than a month old. Four US soldiers; three were shot and the fourth died of radiation poisoning. Daniel asks if the soldiers told him what year it was. He didn’t get to answer because they arrived at the camp. They are introduced to an ageless Richard Alpert. He believes the 3 to be US military who’ve come to retrieve “the bomb”.

They’re shoved into a tent where Daniel tell Miles and Charlotte to play along. Richard comes in and asks where the rest of their squad is. Daniel says he won’t tell because Richard will just kill them. Richard tells Dan that he didn’t start the attacking “their” people did. Dan says that they’re just scientists and noting the burns on one of the Others, says he believes that the casing on the bomb is cracked and they need him to fix it so it doesn’t detonate. Richard asks how he knows he’s not just on some suicide mission and plans to detonate the bomb and kill them all. Dan tells him that he’s in love with Charlotte and would never do anything to hurt her. After Richard leaves, Charlotte tells Dan that he didn’t have to lie like that and he tells her that he wasn’t lying. Just then, Ellie comes to take Dan to the bomb.

Outside of the tent Richard explains to Daniel that they were living peacefully on the island when they found 18 members of an Army battalion in the jungle. He gave them the opportunity to leave but they refused. He was forced to kill them. Dan emphasizes “forced?” and Richard tells him that he gets his orders just as Dan does. Just then “Jones” comes running into the camp and says “Cunningham” and I (what about the guy that Locked knifed down?) were outnumbered and captured. Ellie makes a snide remark about being outnumbered and “Jones” tells her to "shut up Ellie". (Remember this because I’ll be referring to it later…). Richard asks how he got away and how he was sure he wasn’t followed. He tells Richard that they’re leader is an “old man” that couldn’t track him and doesn’t know the island as well as he does.

Right up above the camp, we see the “old man”, who DID track him and DOES know the island better then him. He asks Juliet how she knew that Richard would be there and she tells him that “Richard has always been here”. When he ask just how old he is she tells him (ala One-Word-Ben) “old”. Locke tells Juliet that he’s going down to the camp to have a chat with Richard. He tells her about they talk they were having before the island moved. Sawyer notes that Daniel is being “death marched” into the jungle at the moment. Locke tells him that he can take care of Dan; he’s going to talk to Richard.
As Dan and Ellie walk to the bomb he notes that “you look so much like…someone I used to know” (remember this too…). Ellie tells him that she doesn’t believe that him, “a British woman and a Chinese man” are US military (keen eye on that one). She asks who they really are and he tells her that he’s her best chance at disarming the bomb. She tells him to get to it as he turns and sees a HUGE bomb.

Daniel climbs the firing tower where the bomb hangs to inspect it. Ellie stays below, gun on him. He inspects it and sees a crack. He climbs down and instructs Ellie to step back. He tells her it’s dangerous and warns her of the outcome should she shoot him. He tells her that the bomb needs to be buried and asks if they have access to any lead or concrete. Immediately I thought of the hatch. Yes, “the” hatch. Read this bit of transcript from “Everybody Hates Hugo” where Jack and Sayid are poking around the Swan station (aka the hatch) after Desmond ditches it…

SAYID: I believe we're under the area where we began. They poured concrete all the way down here, too.
[Sayid starts hitting the wall with the piece of metal.]
SAYID: Just as thick.
JACK: Maybe there's a way around it.
[They crawl forward though what looks like pipes.]
JACK: What is all this stuff?
SAYID: My best guess? There's geothermal generator behind this wall. That's the power source. Careful with these pipes, they're very hot.
[They come to the end of the tunnel.]
JACK: That's it -- nothing -- it's blocked. So what do you think, Sayid?
SAYID: What do I think about what, Jack?
JACK: This place -- the computer? What do you think is going on?
SAYID: The last time I heard of concrete being poured over everything in this way was Chernobyl.

I’m guessing that that’s where this bomb was buried. I bet, somehow, pushing the button every 108 minutes kept it from detonating. That fail-safe that Des turned detonated it and the rest is history. Anyway, on with the story… Ellie asks why he thinks burying it will keep it from detonating and he says he just knows. Finally he blurts out that he knows because the island is still there in 50 years. He explains that that’s where he and his friends are from just as Sawyer comes out of the jungle, armed, and tells Ellie to drop her gun. Juliet follows, and tells everyone to drop their guns. Ellie drops hers and Juliet picks it up just as Sawyer notices the bomb. Ellie asks “are they from the future too?” Sawyer can’t believe he told her.

Back at the camp Locke barges in and yells for Richard. “Jones” sees him and pulls his gun directing him to stop. Richard appears just as “Jones” puts his gun in Locke’s back. Richard asks who he is. “John Locke”. After a short pause, and no expression, Richard asks if that should mean something to him. This is interesting because Richard has known John since, literally, the day he was born, as we’ve learned from flashbacks. John tells him “Jacob sent me”. Boy is he lucky here. He has no idea “when” he is. What makes him so sure that Jacob is the leader at the time? With that Richard orders “Jones” to put his gun down. When he doesn’t Richard walks over and slaps the rifle down and says “I said put the gun down… Widmore”. LOVE THIS SHOW! Locke turns to Widmore and asks if it’s “Charles Widmore”… “What’s it to you?” he asks. “Nothing.” Locke says, “Nice to meet you”. Side note….it’s pretty safe to assume that these men got their military outfits off the 18 dead soldiers. Hence, “Jones” is not a “Jones” at all but rather a “Widmore”. Why then does he refer to his friend as Cunningham when his uniform DOES say Cunningham? Did he really get that lucky and kill a soldier with the same name?

And now for all those things I asked you to remember… I think that Ellie is Daniel’s mother and that’s why he recognizes her. At first I thought that maybe Widmore was his father since he was funding all his research and then took it upon himself to care for the woman it harmed. But after hearing the way they talked to one another I think they may be brother and sister, making Daniel Widmore’s nephew. To further prove my theory, Widmore got her address for Desmond from the back of his address book, leading me to believe her last name was more likely Widmore then Faraday.

On with the story… Inside a tent at the camp Locke explains to Richard how he came about his compass, explaining to us how Richard knew where to be. Richard is having a hard time swallowing his time-travel story which means that this is the first he’s learned of the islands capabilities. Locke tells Richard that he was about to tell him how to get off the island when it last moved. Richard tells him that he doubts that since that’s “very privileged information”. Locke says he’d tell him because he’s his leader. Richard scoffs and says that the have a very specific process for selecting they’re leaders and it starts at a very young age. Locke asks what year it is and tells him that he’ll be born in 2 years… “I suggest you come visit me” he tells him. LOVE THIS SHOW! That explains why Richard doesn't know him, he hasn't been to his birth yet.

Just then Locke hears the humming indicating that the island is about to move again. This time Richard does not hear it. He asks Locke what’s wrong, he tells him that it’s about to happen again and he needs to tell he how to get off the island. Flash… island moves. I’m sure Locke disappearing before his eyes has now convinced the 1954 Richard that he was telling the truth. Guess that's why he wasted no time giving him that "very privileged information" so quickly during their future encounter.

Locke now stands in an open field, no tents. Nearby Miles and Charlotte stand with their hands tied as they were in the tent. Approaching, Daniel calls out the Charlotte and asks if she’s ok. She says she is while Miles notes he is as well, even though he wasn’t asked. Just then Charlotte collapse with another bloody nose. Daniel holds her and cries as though she’s died.

Now, when Richard comes to Locke’s aid and removes the bullet and tells him that “privileged information” on how to get off the island. He has to die. What Locke really needs is more details. Does this mean that every time Richard leaves, he has to die? When he went to recruit Juliet, did he have to die? When he went to see Locke’s birth, did he have to die? Are the Others that live on the mainland there to revive him? Does this mean, like I said before, that Jeremy Bentham can be revived? Locke is NOT dead people! LOVE THIS SHOW! Have I mentioned that?

5.02 "The Lie"

Hurley's feeling guilty about those left behind. The "Lefties" start to feel the effects of time-jumping while Ben and Jack start planning how to reunite the O6.
We open on the Searcher, Penny’s boat, shortly after the O6 are rescued. They’ve discussed the lie they’re going to tell to protect those they left behind from Charles Widmore. Everyone reluctantly agrees (except Fariday who says he’ll roll with whatever) to go along with the lie except Hurley. He asks if Penny can just get her dad to back off but she says she can’t. Jack says no one’s going to believe them even if they told the truth and if Hurley does, everyone will think he’s crazy. He says they won’t if someone backs him up. He looks to Sayid who says he agrees with Jack. Hurley’s angry with him and says he’ll remember this and won’t be there for Sayid should he ever need him.

3 years later… Hurley’s driving like a crazy man with an unconscious Sayid in the passenger seat. While trying to put Sayid’s seatbelt on, he hits a newspaper vending machine, he gets pulled over. Immediately I thought, “it’s going to be Anna Lucia” but I couldn’t figure out *how* it’d be her. Luckily, the-powers-that-be figured out a way.. it’s Anna Lucia! LOVE THIS SHOW! Hurley looks shocked… by now you’d think this was second nature to him; seeing dead people and all. She tells him to be careful before he gets caught. She tells him to get new clothes, get someplace safe and get Sayid to someone he trusts. She tells him to stay away from the cops and “DO NOT get arrested”. After her pep talk she says “Libby says hi” and walks off. Hurley looks to see the cruiser behind him but it’s gone.

Back on the island… our last time shift happened while Des and Daniel were talking. We’re not sure “when” we are now since we weren’t shown what the hatch looked like after this flash.

On the beach the group is arguing about fire and food and how they have no control over when the island will move again. Sawyer finds a shirt and asks whose it is. It’s Frogurt’s. He asks if he can have it, Frogurt doesn’t care. Side note: the sci-fi world refers to the extras that get killed off as “redshirts”. You’ll notice that Neil is actually *wearing* a red shirt. Sad thing is… the shirt Sawyer just borrowed from him… red. Dan comes out of the jungle and tells the others that he got lost, that’s why he was so far behind them. Juliet wants to take the Zodiac (the raft) out to a shipping lane in hopes to find rescue but Dan says that he needs to figure out where they are first so they can take the correct bearing. In the meantime, Miles sets out to find food, Sawyer and Juliet to find water.

Hurley stops at a gas station to buy a new shirt. After swiping money from Sayid’s wallet (what was with the long blonde hair on his black shirt?) he goes in and picks out a t-shirt. The only one that fits says “I Y my Shih-Tzu”. The girl at the counter is worth every penny of her minimum wage… Hurley’s ON her TV because he’s a fugitive but she recognizes him from when he won the lottery like 4 years ago and *then* because he was part of the O6, 3 years ago. He says nope, not him, throws some money at her, tells her to keep the change and leaves.

As he pulls out of the parking lot, Kate pulls in. Small world huh? She parks her car, Aaron’s in the back seat coloring (shouldn’t he be in a car seat of some sort?). She looks flustered. Again, second nature should be taking over here. She’s lived half her life on the run. She pulls a map from her glove box then picks up her cell and debates calling Jack. Just as she decides not to, she receives a call. It comes up as an unknown number. Side note here… if *I* were on the run not only would I not be answering an unknown number phone call but I’d probably have ditched the phone long ago since “The Man” can track your whereabouts with those things. She answers and sounds excited to hear from whoever’s on the other end. She agrees to meet with them in a half hour.

Ben’s removing a vent cover in his hotel room and removes a box. Hmm…the things that could be in that box. My guess? His weapon (that black stick) and whatever he needs to revive “dead” Locke. Yeah, I don’t think he’s dead. Jack comes into the room looking for his pills but Ben tells him he’s flushed them. He says that was his plan. He asks where they’re going when he sees that Ben’s packing. Ben tells Jack to go home and pack a suit case with whatever he wants from this life because he won’t be coming back. “Good” he says. Jack asks what Ben’s going to do. He says he can’t leave Locke in the van. He has to put him somewhere safe. Jack notes that he’s dead… right? Ben doesn’t answer. HA! Told you! Ben says he’ll pick him up in 6 hours.

At Hurley’s mansion, his dad is making himself the grossest sandwich I’ve ever seen. He then plops down to watch Expose. If you remember… Expose was the soap opera that Nikki was on. Nikki was the girl that was buried alive on the island after everyone believed her and her boyfriend were dead from a spider bite. There’s a knock on the back door. It’s Hurley with an unconscious Sayid. He asks him if he’s seen the news but he says he just got up (ah, lap of luxury). His mom’s out shopping. They confirm that he’s alive and Hurley tells him what’s been going on just as the police show up. Hurley asks him to lie to them. The officers leave but wait in their car outside. Hurley’s dad says he thinks they should call a lawyer but he says they can’t because someone’s after them. He doesn’t even want to take Sayid to the hospital. His dad says they need to get Sayid a doctor. Hurley knows what to do.

Kate and Aaron are in a hotel and go to the top floor (#31). They’re meeting Sun.

Ben arrives at a butcher shop. (FYI – All we’ve ever learned of Charlie’s father was from a dream he had in the episode “Fire & Water”. In the dream his father was angry that his mother had bought him a piano for Christmas because he wanted him to follow in his footsteps and become…dum, dum, dum… a butcher!) Ben pulls #342 (42! Numbers alert!). Jill the butcher knows him. She even knows what’s in the van. Ben asks if she can watch him for him. He also asks if Gabriel and Jeffrey have checked in. Could they be Kate’s lawyers? She says yes, and that everything is moving right on schedule. She asks how things are going with Jack and jokes that he probably had to be bribed with pills. Ben defends him and she apologizes. He tells her to take good care of Locke because if she doesn’t everything they’re “about to do won’t matter at all”.

Night arrives on the beach without anymore flashes. They’re still trying to build a fire and get it to spark but it goes out. Neil (Frogurt) starts throwing a tantrum. Rose tells him to take a time out.

Charlotte brings Daniel a mango that she found in the jungle. He asks how she’s feeling; referring to the nosebleed she’d had earlier. She said she has a headache that she can’t shake. She tells him that she also forgot her mother’s maiden name earlier in the day. Daniel writes it off to stress but she can see that he knows something more. Just then Miles comes out of the jungle with a dead boar. He tells them that he’d found it and it’s only been dead for 3 hours. He can see the spirits of dead animals too huh? He asks if anyone has a knife and Neil starts another tantrum. He starts calling people names and complains that they can’t even get FIRE! Just then a flaming arrow comes flying through the sky and kills him. Suddenly the sky is full of flaming arrows. The group runs for the jungle as Sawyer yells to them to spilt up and meet at the creek.

Hurley’s dad asks him if he’s crazy. If he’s not, he’s lying. Hurley says he has a good reason for lying. Just then Hurley’s mom comes home asking about the dead guy on the couch. I’m wondering now if Locke and Sayid have been drugged with the same thing. Sayid’s been mistaken for dead twice now, that’s a powerful drug! Hurley says it’s time to go, now. Hurley’s dad sneaks Sayid out while Hurley stays behind with his mother.

While enjoying tea, Sun tells Kate that she’s in LA on business. She sees that Kate seems tense. After double-checking that Aaron’s sleeping she tells Sun about the lawyers. Sun says that it sounds to her that because they weren’t more aggressive, the client probably just wants to get Aaron from her rather then exposing their lie. Sun hints that Kate should kill whoever it is to protect Aaron. Kate’s offended by Sun’s assumption that she could just kill someone like that. Sun then mentions how Kate had promised to get Jin on the freighter but instead saved herself. She says that she doesn’t blame her because she was doing what she had to do. I’m not sure how I feel about this. She’s coming off as though she does blame Kate but then again, she could just be defending her actions for sending the lawyers the Kate’s house. Doing what “she has to do” to get to Ben maybe? I find it suspicious that she’s in LA and calls Kate the very same day she’s visited by the lawyers. She then asks Kate “so, how’s Jack”.

Jack meets Hurley’s dad and takes Sayid from him. Jack says Sayid needs to go to the hospital and to trust him as Hurley did. Hurley’s dad tells Jack to stay away from Hurley now. Jack takes Sayid and calls Ben. He tells him that he has Sayid.

Sawyer and Juliet clear the attack and head for the creek. Sawyer is still shoe-less and steps on something. He pulls it from just below his big toe just as he and Juliet hear something. They hide beneath bushes and see 3 sets of legs walk by. As they argue about who the people were, 3 men grab them from behind. They ask “What are you doing on our island?” with a British accent.

Back at home Hurley tells his mom the truth about everything. As wild as it sounds she tells him that she sincerely believes him.

In the hospital Jack checks Sayid’s vitals then tries to resuscitate him by giving him adrenaline. It takes a minute and Jack almost thinks it’s not working when Sayid awakes and immediate starts to strangle Jack before he realizes who he is. He asks what happened and Jack tells him that Hurley’s father brought him to him. He asks where Hurley is. Jack tells him that he’s at home, probably with is mother.

Later that night, while heating up a Hot Pocket, Ben greets Hurley from his back door. Hurley pitches the Hot Pocket at him, which made me literally laugh out loud. OMG was that funny! And the look on Ben’s face was priceless. Ben offers to take Hurley back to the island so he never has to lie again. Ben’s sweet talking appears to be working then suddenly Hurley says “Never dude” and bursts out the door and runs to the police sitting outside. He confesses to killing 3 or 4 people “however many are dead”. Figuring he’d be safe from Ben in jail. WTH, isn’t he doing exact what Anna Lucia told him NOT to do?

The men threaten to cut off Juliet’s “other hand” if Sawyer doesn’t start giving answers. “The first one’s not negotiable” he explains. Just as they’re about the cut off the first, rocks come flying through the air. 2 of the men are knocked down, Juliet grabs a gun and holds it on one. As Sawyer takes down the 3rd the other goes after Sawyer when a knife comes flying through the air and kills him. Bad-ass Locke is back. My first thought was that the flying arrows were coming from the crew of the Black Rock since they were such “old school” weapons but these men look to be 1940s military so that’d be way after the Black Rock. I’m stumped.

In our last scene we see a cloaked woman scribbling mathematical formula on a chalk board. Instantly we’re reminded of Daniel back at Oxford that day that Des visited him. This also could lead us to believe that this woman may be Daniel’s mother. She types some of her numbers into an old computer which then displays “EVENT WINDOW DETERMINED”. We also see a giant pendulum drawing out a large asterisks on a map. She leaves the room through a large hatch door and then climbs a flight of stairs to a church. We see Ben has been waiting for her. He asks if she’s had any luck and she says “yes, how about you?” He tells her that he’s having some difficulties. She tells him he better get busy because he’s only got 70 hours. He tells her that’s not enough time but she doesn’t care. She removes her hood to reveal that she’s Ms. Hawking. You’ll remember her from when Des was leaping time in "The Constant" and visited her store to buy an engagement ring for Penny. Below is a transcript of their meeting.

[Cut to a close up of wedding rings in a display counter.]

MS. HAWKING: Never done this before have you?

[Camera reveals Desmond in a second hand shop.]

DESMOND: Is it that obvious?

MS. HAWKING: I can always tell the first timers. Well, then, may I ask your price range?

DESMOND: I'm not a man of means...

MS. HAWKING: Oh...

DESMOND: I hope to -- one day...

MS. HAWKING: I have just the thing.

[she shows him a ring]

This won't blind any queens, to be sure, but still has the sparkle of life.

DESMOND: I'll take it.

MS. HAWKING [surprised]: I'm sorry?

DESMOND: It's perfect. I'll take it.

MS. HAWKING: No you won't. Give me the ring. Give it here.

DESMOND: I don't understand.

MS. HAWKING: This is wrong. You don't buy the ring. You have second thoughts; you walk right out that door. So, come on, let's have it.

DESMOND: I don't know what you're on about.

MS. HAWKING: You don't buy the ring, Desmond.

DESMOND: How do you know my name?

MS. HAWKING: Well, I know your name as well as I know that you that don't ask Penny to marry you. In fact, you break her heart. Well, breaking her heart is, of course, what drives you in a few short years from now to enter that sailing race -- to prove her father wrong -- which brings you to the island where you spend the next 3 years of your life entering numbers into the computer until you are forced to turn that failsafe key. And if you don't do those things, Desmond David Hume, every single one of us is dead. So give me that sodding ring.

MS. HAWKING [when Desmond doesn't give her the ring]: Oh, you're going to be difficult about this, I can see.

DESMOND: Who are you?

MS. HAWKING: Do you like chestnuts?

DESMOND: What?

[Scene switches to Ms. Hawking buying chestnuts from a street vendor.]

MS. HAWKING: Thank you.

[She notices a man climbing stairs from the Underground.]

MS. HAWKING: That man over there is wearing red shoes.

DESMOND: So, what then?

MS. HAWKING: Just thought it was a bold fashion choice worth noting.

DESMOND: This isn't really happening, is it?

MS. HAWKING: Sorry?

DESMOND: I've had a concussion. You're my subconscious.

MS. HAWKING [amused]: Am I?

DESMOND: You're here to talk me out of marrying Penny. Well, it won't bloody work.

MS. HAWKING: Oh, yes it will.

DESMOND: No, there is no island. There is no button. It's madness. I love her. She loves me. I'm going to spend the rest of my life with her.

MS. HAWKING: No, Desmond, you're not.

[Suddenly, there is a loud crash behind the bench Ms. Hawking and Desmond have been sitting on. Some scaffolding has fallen and killed the man with red shoes.]

DESMOND: Oh, my God. You knew that was going to happen, didn't you? [she nods] Then why didn't you stop it? Why didn't you do anything?

MS. HAWKING: Because it wouldn't matter. Had I warned him about the scaffolding tomorrow he'd be hit by a taxi. If I warned him about the taxi, he'd fall in the shower and break his neck. The universe, unfortunately, has a way of course correcting. That man was supposed to die. That was his path just as it's your path to go to the island. You don't do it because you choose to, Desmond. You do it because you're supposed to.

DESMOND: I'm going to meet Penny in an hour. I've got the ring; she'll say yes; I can choose whatever I want.

MS. HAWKING: You may not like your path, Desmond, but pushing that button is the only truly great thing that you will ever do.

DESMOND: How much for the ring?

[Ms. Hawking looks disappointed and walks away.]

Ben asks what happens if he can’t get them all back and she says “God help us all”. Word for word what Pierre Chang said to the foreman about drilling any closer to the "frozen donkey wheel".

5.01 "Because You Left"

Season 5 opens with a missing island, the O6 trying to live normal lives and the "Lefties" trying to figure out what's happening to them and the island.
We open on an alarm clock going off at 8:15 (hmm, 8:15, where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, Oceanic flight 815…) and a baby is crying. Wish my kids slept until 8:15. A woman rolls to a man and tells him it’s his turn. He gets up, puts on a record (priorities) ala Desmond style (the song btw is Willie Nelson’s Shotgun Willie), and feeds the baby. Doesn’t seem all that interested in the kid IMO. FYI: at this summer’s Comic Con there was a video of this man doing his filming while a baby cries off camera. He stops taping and yells at a woman to get “him out of here”. It’s pretty safe to assume that “he” is the baby he has here. Next question… who’s the baby? Could it be Miles? Could it be Jin? Could it be no one we’ve met? Probably not. My official vote is Miles. On with the story…he showers, shaves, brushes his teeth and as he’s getting clothes (which all look the same btw) the record begins skipping (“if you can’t make a record, can’t make a record, can’t make a record). When he leaves we recognize his little town as Otherville (aka: the barracks). A woman walks by quickly that appears to be a few months pregnant. Looks like having babies isn’t a problem right now. “He” is Dr. Marvin Candle aka Dr. Edgar Halliwax aka Dr. Mark Wickmund aka Pierre Chang. He’s huffy and pushes away the script as it’s being handed to him. Says he knows his lines. The clapper says it take one of the second DHARMA Initiative orientation video, this time for the Arrow station. (Why is he wearing a Swan coat while filming an Arrow video?) We saw a small section of the Arrow station when the Tailies discovered it and used it for shelter. They found a box that contained a glass eye, a radio and a Bible which contained the cut out portions of some of the orientation videos. While shooting he’s interrupted by a man (Eric, according to his jumper) saying that there is trouble at the Orchid.

They pull up in what I think is the only vehicle Otherville has, the blue VW bus. We see a brand-new-under-construction Orchid which looks so much different than the Orchid Locke was just in. A worker takes him to the lower level via the elevator where he says they’ve ruined 6 drill bits (melted 1 even) trying to get through the wall (where there are only 5 holes, so I’m guessing the 6th melted before it got anywhere) and the worker is now “freaking out” (and his nose is bleeding). The foreman tells Chang that he took a sonar image of what’s behind the wall and the image reveals the “frozen donkey wheel” (this is a nickname given by the shows producers) Ben turned to move the island. Chang tells the foreman to stop drilling and tells him of the energy and time manipulation possibilities held behind that wall. The foreman cracks a joke about killing Hitler but Chang tells him they can’t do that because there “are rules, rules that can’t be broken”. He tells the worker that if he drills even 1cm further they’d risk releasing the energy and if that were to happen well, “God help us all”. As he leaves he bumps into a worker, who I knew immediately was Daniel just because of the way he was carrying himself. Now… what was Daniel doing there? My guess is that the island will ‘leap’ to this time and he’ll sneak away to see where all this time-travel stuff started. What he’ll do there… only time will tell. He didn’t look as excited as someone who’s spent his life studying time travel would be so I’m guessing he’s up to no good.

Jack stands over John’s casket. Ben asks him to close it and get him in the van. I got the vibe here that he thinks Jack might see Locke move or something. Jack tells Ben that he’ll never be able to convince the other 5 O6 to return. He wonders why so many bad things have happened. Ben coldly tells him “It happened because you left”.

At a hotel Jack shaves and asks Ben’s plan. I’m guessing that Locke is in the van now. They’re plan is to get Hurley first because he should be the easiest, since he’s crazy and all. Jack asks when the last time was that Ben saw Locke. Ben reveals to Jack that he hasn’t seen him since the day he left the island. He asks Jack what John told him. He told him that everyone they’d left behind would die too. Ben asks if he told him what happened after they left and he says no. Ben looks disappointed and says “then I guess we’ll never know”. I think though that he does know. I personally believe that Widmore put Ben in charge of the island when *he* moved it years ago.

Three years earlier… We’re now on the island, immediately following the flash of light. Locke finds that the Others have disappeared and he’s standing alone in the rain. We see Daniel, on the boat, with some Losties (including, Neil, one we’ve never met before). Daniel sees the island and notes that the must have been “inside the radius” when it moved. On the beach Sawyer and Juliet notice that the burning freighter is gone as Bernard bursts from the jungle yelling for Rose. When she emerges they tell Sawyer and Juliet that the camp has disappeared. Just like to point out here that it’s interesting how it’s only raining over Locke.

Daniel arrives back on the island to Charlotte’s joy because she thought he was on the doomed freighter. He asks to be taken to the closest man-made structure. Juliet tells him of the Swan, the hatch that was blown up. He says they should get moving before “it” happens again. Sawyer asks what “it” is and why the camp has disappeared. He tells them that the camp has not disappeared, it hasn’t been built yet.

LOST

In LA, Kate and Aaron enjoy breakfast and cartoons. The doorbell rings. It’s an attorney and his “associate” there to retrieve blood samples from Kate and Aaron to determine her relationship to him. She asks who he’s representing but he says he can’t tell her. She tells him to come back with the sheriff. Kate packs a bag, grabs some hidden money and a hidden gun and she and Aaron leave. I don’t see any reason why he can’t tell her who is client is, but I’m no lawyer. It seems to me that someone is just trying to scare her into going on the run. My personally opinion… Ben. I think he’s trying to scare Kate into going back to the island so she won’t lose Aaron.

As they head to the Swan Juliet asks Sawyer why he jumped from the helicopter. He’s says it was because he wanted to make sure she… err, they got to the freighter. “Doesn’t matter now” he says, believing that the chopper went down with the freighter. Daniel asks them to beat feet saying that they don’t know how long they have until it happens again. Sawyer tells him to hold up and tries to bully him into giving him his shirt. You’d think he’d want some shoes instead… but whatever. I thought Dan might cave here since he’s such a nerd but he tells him they have more pressing matters right now. Sawyer tells him to explain himself, he says he can’t. Sawyer bitch slaps him and threatens to do the same to Charlotte after she yells at him. Suddenly Daniel *can* explain it. He tells them that either they or the island is skipping through time because of what Ben did. He suggests that it’s probably them. I’m confused here, no surprise considering the show, but why would the island disappear from view if it’s just skipping through time? It’s not like they’ve gone so far back that they island wasn’t there at all… if that were the case, they’d be underwater right? Des and even Daniel’s rat way back at Oxford didn’t physically disappear when they leapt through time, why has the island? Anyway, Daniel then asks if they’re whole group is accounted for. Sawyer says Locke is missing what about Claire?).

Back to Locke… and no more rain. He’s climbing a hill which immediately reminded me of the hill the group climbs in the first season to try to get a signal on they’re sat phone only to pick up Rousseau’s message. He sees something in the distance and narrowly misses being hit by a low-flying plane. He watches it crash in the jungle and notices a Virgin Mary statue on the ground where it’d passed. Could it be? Interesting. LOVE THIS SHOW BTW! Being the super-tracker he is, he finds the plane and it’s the very Beechcraft that he and Boone had found… years after it’d initially crashed. He calls up to it and climbs to search for survivors when he’s suddenly being shot at from the ground. He gets hit in the leg and falls. Side note… if you’ll remember when he and Boone were here, he was unable to walk, believing the island was making him paralyzed again for not “believing” in it. Could it have been that he was suffering the pain from the Locke that was shot there years earlier? The shooter reveals himself to be Ethan! LOVE THIS SHOW, OMG! Locke is stunned. I’m excited! As Ethan threatens to kill him Locke tells him he knows him, and tries to explain who he is. When he tells him that Ben has made him leader of the Others, Ethan claims that “that’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard” and prepares to shoot him. Just then the white light appears, though Ethan doesn’t appear to notice it, and time shifts again, saving Locke’s life. It’s now night.

It is night with the beach group as well. Sawyer asks “when” they are. Daniel brilliantly deducts that they are “either in the past (long pause) or in the future”. Duh. *Now* is when you should slap him, Sawyer.

In London airport, Sun is leaving for LA. She’s trying to make a call but there is no answer. After presenting her passport she’s detained by security. She comes to find out she’s been detained at Charles Widmore’s request. Widmore tells her not to bother trying to get out “they do what I tell them”. (Does this mean he *owns* Oceanic? That’d explain how one of their planes got to the bottom of the ocean.) He’s angry with her for approaching him in broad daylight and showing him no respect. He asks what, exactly, their “common interests” are. She tells him “to kill Benjamin Linus”.
Snore.

In their hotel room Jack and Ben see a news report about Hurley’s escape from Santa Rosa and the dead man found outside that they believe he killed. Ben believes getting them back to the island is going to be a bit more complicated now.

Hurley has Sayid stop for lunch at the Rainbow Drive-In (a real place in Hawaii btw). That Hurley sure loves his chicken. Speaking of the chicken, the sign on the building is reflected in the puddle on the ground but it’s not a reflection at all. Take a look at this screencap…

What could this mean? Is it some kind of clue?

They then head to the safe house. Hurley asks Sayid who the guy outside the hospital was. Sayid says he doesn’t care, he was armed and he’s not taking any risks since Bentham died. Hurley says “you mean Locke?” Oh, *now* they can say it? Pfftt. Hurley then says he needs cool code name. LOL Dude’s funny stuff. Hurley asks Sayid why he’s so paranoid. He tells him that he’s been working for Ben. When Hurley asks if he’s on their side now Sayid tells Hurley to never, ever trust Ben and always do the opposite of what he says. Sayid then notices that the piece of tape he placed over the hotel room door has been broken meaning someone’s inside. He’s then attacked by a man from inside the room and quickly tosses him over the balcony. Inside the room another man attacks. Sayid kills him as well (and shows us all why knives should be put in the dishwasher handle up!) but not before being hit by 2 darts. Outside the room Hurley picks up the gun on the ground a looks over the balcony. Some people that have noticed the dead body of the first man see Hurley with the gun and take his picture. Hurley runs inside and helps Sayid out to the car just before the dart kicks in and renders him unconscious. As they stumble out Hurley notes that they “never should have left that island”.

It’s still night and the beach group has arrived at the Hatch, which is nothing more than a crater. This leads them to conclude that they’ve already blown it up. Sawyer and Juliet try to argue that they could stop the helicopter from leaving now and save their friends. Daniel explains to them that they can’t change anything. If it’s happened, there’s no way to stop it or change it. Sawyer asks him how he knows so much about it. Daniel pulls out his journal and tells him he’s studied the DHARAM Initiative and knows all about space/time travel. Sawyer asks how to stop it, Dan says they can’t. “Who can?” Sawyer asks.

The Beechcraft is on the ground now, indicating that it’s after Boone’s death. Locke climbs in and takes a seatbelt to tie around his wounded leg. He sees someone approaching carrying a torch. I SO wanted it to Charlie sneaking to the plane for a fix but no… it’s Richard. Somehow he knew exactly where Locke would be (I’m guessing, in the future Locke will tell him of this moment and Richard will act accordingly). Locke tells him of the bullet, Richard says he told him, or will tell him. Locke says Ethan shot him, Richard says “what comes around, goes around” because Charlie ends up shooting Ethan. Richard removes Locke’s bullet and tells him that the next time they meet he won’t know Locke. He gives him a compass and tells him to give it to him the next time he sees him. Locke asks what it does, Richard simply states “it points north, John”. Legitimate question if you ask me. (You may recognize this compass from when Richard visits John as a child and “tests” him.) He tells John that the only way to save the island now is to get back those who left. So why the hell did you and Ben let them leave? *shakes head* Locke asks how he’s supposed to do that, Richard says he’ll have to die. Another flash, unnoticed by Richard, and it’s day again. The Beechcraft is again atop the cliff and smoking. You’d think Ethan would still be there searching the plane since that’s where he thought Locke came from…. but he’s not. He probably freaked out when Locke disappeared before his eyes and ran straight to Ben.

The beach group now finds that the hatch is intact. Sawyer bolts into the jungle, telling the group that he’s going in through the back door to get Des to give them some supplies. Daniel tries to tell him that he can’t talk to Desmond. It didn’t happen before, it can’t happen now. Sawyer knocks, no one answers. They decide to head back to the beach. Why did they come out here to begin with? Wasn’t Daniel all frantic about finding something man-made? I’m confused again. Maybe it was just to try to get a better idea of “when” exactly they were. Juliet, Sawyer and Miles leave as Daniel notices that Charlotte’s nose is bleeding. She tells him that she hasn’t had a nosebleed since she was little. Daniel knows what’s going on. Do we? We know that those that time travel need a “constant”. Something that’s there, past, present and future, that you recognize. If you don’t have one, you’ll suffer a brain aneurysm and die. The nosebleed it the first sign that it’s happening. Only catch here is that when Des was time traveling it was only his consciousness, not his physical body. Could just the actual movement be causing this nosebleed? Would a constant really help her? Daniel tells Charlotte that he forgot his pack and will be right behind them as soon as he gets it. Alone with the back door, Daniel tries knocking on it himself after looking at his journal. Desmond answers dressed in his protective gear (remember, he stayed in there because he was told that the air outside was not safe) and toting a rifle. Des asks Daniel if he’s “the one”… his “replacement”. Dan says no. Des asks if he knows Daniel and he tells him “sort of”. We begin to hear the hum sound indicating that the island is about to move again. Odd thing is, Des hears it too, unlike Ethan or Richard. Generally, only those that are actually moving with the island hear the sound and see the light. Quickly Daniel tells him that he’s special and “the rules” of the island don’t seem to apply to him. He tells him that when he leaves the island on the helicopter, those he left behind will be in grave danger and only he can save them. Daniel instructs a confused Des to go to Oxford and find his mother. The flash occurs before he can give him her name.

Desmond awakes with a start to find Penny at his side. He says he was on the island. Penny notes that he’s been off of it for 3 years now; it was just a bad dream (she’s wearing a wedding band here, leading me to believe they’re now married). Des says it wasn’t a dream, it was a memory. He runs outside to raise the anchor. When Penny asks where they’re going Des tells her, to Oxford.

LOST

This time leaping thing is AWESOME! We can learn so much if they keep up with it. Who are the skeletons found in the caves (aka: Adam & Eve)? How did the Black Rock get to the middle of the island? What happened to Rousseau's people? What s that 4-toed statue we saw once for a brief moment and then never saw again? This is going to be so cool!
